Becareful Candling The Eggs

Featured Replies

I candle my egs at a week and just before hatching. The last is a certain check to see if the eggs are fertile and alright. On saturday I candling the latest clutch that was due to hatch on tuesday. I found that the eggs looked like this Forth Egg Picture down. Alan was there when we checked them and confirmed my thoughts that they were dead in shell. :P

I decided to be safe and leave them till the end of the week rather than throwing them straight out.

They were due to hatch on Tuesday gone. I wasn't surprised when they didn't hatch on Tuesday or Wednesday. I checked them Wednesday night (Late afternoon after dark) to find nothing. I plan to throw them out on Saturday, which is my day of cleaning.

Late Wednesday night a friend came over and wanted to see the aviary. I went to show him what Budgerigar eggs looked like and ended up showing him a newly hatched chick. 1 hour old. Thursday morning two more eggs hatched and currently (Today is Friday here) I have three health chicks and expect the next to hatch tomorrow(Saturday) and the last one on Monday.

I have candled a numbr of clutches and this is the first ones that looked like this. I am glad I didn't throw them out.

Here is Dad (Bob) and Mum (Lisa) Karen's birds. Also one of the eggs were fostered from Greeny wh is resting after 2 clutches and Huey This is their Last Clutch

So I suppose the lesson here is don't prematurly throw out eggs that you are not 100% sure of. Leave them 5 to 7 days after the due hatching date to see what happens. :D

Baby Photos to come.
