Posted May 11, 200619 yr Hi i am some what confused about me hens as they are nesting in the same box is this normal behavour for new hens in a colony? or do i need to seperate them? I have 2 boxes in the avary both different and at different locations in the cage is this a prob it has never happened to me before.
May 11, 200619 yr You will find that you need at least twice the number of nesting boxes as there are hens. So if you have two hens you will need at least 4 to 5 boxes. They all like the ones that are higher up, so If you can keep them at the same level there shouldn't be any fights over them. Try to keep the nesting boxes well apart.....at least 18 inches apart or they will fly at each other to defend their "doorstep" so to speak. If you try this arrangement you may be better off. Obviously there are harder tasks in colony breeding and you must be watchful of your birds and keep your wits about you in case changes are needed at the last minute to protect your birds from personality or territorial disputes. It is not the easiest way to breed budgies ( Colony Breeding ) but I breed both ways depending on the personality of my birds and watching them for many hours of the day.
May 12, 200619 yr I am the same, I have certain birds that breed together fine and others that are not so fine.
