I think I have solved my problem. I have made a pull down screen out of shade cloth that can be tied up when we are home, and let down and secured when we aren't.

So, we have had our patio aviary for 2 days now, and have had a butcher bird visit 3 times and this afternoon a set of myner birds. I'm so worried for our budgies. Today, I fixed an Owl to the top of the aviary and some shade cloth to the open bars except one front panel that I need open for access. The myner birds didn't seem worried about the owl, but luckily I was there and scared them away. I have read, rubber snakes are good and well has hanging CD's. Will hang up two cd's tomorrow morning, and try and get a rubber snake. Do anyone have any other ideas I haven't mentioned. I should also add, the bar space is about 1cm-1.5cm. And it's not a huge aviary. It's hexagonal 1.1m wide and 1.8 high. It is covered all the way done on all but one panel with shade cloth. Any ideas are appreciated.

Oh now I'm not sure again lol. It's not a huge aviary, 1.8 x 1.1 x .9 more of a large cage really. Have copied and pasted this too incase you didn't see it on the other thread. With try and delete that thread now to avoid a mess. I had concerns regarding the same thing. But the breeder I've been dealing with said males typically won't fight in that situation. Now I'm not so confident. Maybe I just stick to 2 one male one female. Or 2 female and 2 male and use a breeding box. I guess we can start off with the combination we have chosen and when it come to add the box we might reconsider the arrangement. Do you think the males will fight even without the breeding box in there?

Hi, a breeder told me, if we are going to have 3 or 4 birds in a small aviary better to have 1 female and 2/3 males. As we are hoping to have a go at breeding, she said it would give us the best chance at avoiding problems as its the hens that post most danger in colony breeding. I'm open to the idea at purchasing a seperate breeding box later on but would prefer to keep it in the aviary if possible. Interested to hear your opinions weather you agree with the 1 female 2/3 males would be best to go in this situation. Also, is it o.k to have 1 hen that is 4 months old in with a male that is a year older and another male the same age? Don't plan on introducing a breeding box for at leave 12 months though. thank you we having been talking to some local breeders, very lovely people about possible combinations. I think we have decided to get 1 female and 3 young boys to start off with. The hen is only 4 months old so will let them do their thing for about 10 months then, introduce 1 breeding box. But still considering at the 10 month mark, purchasing a separate breeding cage, and take out the female with her chosen male. Then perhaps add 2 more females at a later date and alternate with the pairings to the breeder cage once we have been able to sell the clutch. This way our flock won't grow too quickly. At this stage we have bought a normal skyblue hen, a yellow face 2 normal cock, and chasing a double factor violet cock, and a lutino cock. Very excited and loving learning about these little creatures

Hi everyone :hi: My 7 year old daughter and I have decided to keep and hopefully breed budgies as a hobby. We have bought the aviary and all the necessities this week, and just waiting for the aviary to arrive before we buy the start of our flock I have many questions about which way would be best for us to go to set up a breeding pair or two. Is it as simple as 2x Males and 2x Females. Or would we be better to get more females? I'm guessing equal male and females as they form pairings. Also, I would like a Yellow face blue type 1 or 2, I have found a young cock that I like. have also found a lacewing cinnamon base that I absolutely love (hen). If we were to pair these two can someone inform me what they would most likely produce? I tried to work it out but I'm not quite there yet. My daughter would like a aqua and white budgie and my son a colbolt blue norm. I know it depends on the mutations we choose. But can someone recommend a nice mutation pairing that would result in nice babies? Like I said I have many questions but couple at a time We are still learning (obviously) but we are loving learning together about budgies and what involved in breeding and look forward to giving it a good crack. L_J I really like the idea of getting an avery, however the space I want to put it in I'm just not sure it would work. My husband doesn't like the look of the galvanised look aviaries as it's up on our deck were we entertain and spend a lot of time. I know that sounds a little silly but still want it to fit in with the current look of the deck as well as making sure we provide them with appropriate living quarters. I'm even happy to try attempt to make a suitable aviary but wouldn't have a clue. Does anyone know of any websites to give me some ideas on different looking aviary cages etc? lol. thank you. I like the look of the black one, so do my kids and my husband. So think we might have a winner How many would you have in there at any one given time, comfortably of course. Just want to start out with 2 but happy to add to our flock as time goes by
