  1. put some grass or paper down on the tray so that it doesnt stain and it is sooo easy to clean that you dont have to get your hands wet. i would still give it a wash every month or so
  2. just be wary because depending on the amount of males, they might try and attack it. this is like the same with chickens, they have a pecking order. they wont mean to attack it but it is just basically finding this order. if they find this budgie is weak, they may attack it too so just be wary
  3. what colours are the parents? it also depends on the genes of both parents. otherwise, one parents gene would be dominant and therefore showing through.
  4. YES!!! budgies can have milk thistle youd be amazed to know that it helps cure liver disease!! these contain vitamn E
  5. if he is around the other birds, he will relise he is a bird as well and the bond between you will never be as strong as what it could be. having baby budgies and taming them can be quite difficult considering all the wild birds around them. if he is just with you, then he will start to believe that he is one of you and start doing things like you. call to him and whistle to him. if he is alone, he will start to mimic these whistles and talk to you. eg. my budgie i have does EVERYTHING with us, even eats off of our plates when we are eating!! she wont leave us alone and will hunt us down if she is alone. males are more known to be a better mimicer of words and whistles. hope this helps
  6. budgies love green things to eat. sand is good for them but so is cuttle fish and sea shells. freshly mown grass is also good. budgies also love chewing on thistles. put perches up because otherwise they will become unhealthy just sitting on the floor. gum leaves probably isnt the best choice, but there are many things they can eat, a couple listed above. foraging is just getting extra to what the diet of seed is. eg isntead of jut eating seed, they will forage for grit and grass. hope this helps
  7. good. make sure you dont upset the parents too much too.
  8. It has to fit into a category of its actual type. The pretty various colours dont really enter into it. For instance there is a set of rules for a recessive pied, and a different set of rules for an albino and a differents set of rules again for a spangle budgie etc. All types have a standard that they must meet and they will be judged on how well they fit the standard for their particualr type. It more about size and posture when showing. Depth of mask ( cheek feathers ), location of the eye in relation to the head shape, the amount of feather, BLOW ( the full head feathers puffed forward to make it look bigger ), Wings held correctly and not crossed, markings being correct, staying on the perch to be shown and not all over the show cage or on the floor. Trimmed claws have nothing to do with it either. There is much, much more to showing budgies and breeding for show than most people realise...and guesses from those who do not really know wont help you get the answers you are looking for. A show budgie must have a breeders legring on its leg as well. You must be a member of a budgerigar club to show and that also is where you can obtain your legrings to put on any chicks you have hatch and grow from show type parent birds. AND judges do NOT take the birds out and handle them at all.
  9. yes good luck!
  10. hey sangee!! well it is best not to mess with the nesting box as much as possible. when they reach the age when they have got their full feathers, thats the time when you can start taming them and bonding with them. like in the wild, parent budgies will leave their nest if it has odd and "predator" smells on it. it might be okay if you are bonded with the parents but just try not to touch the nesting box too much. just info if you have more budgies
  11. budgies hate being grabbed and therefore will do anything they can to get away so yeah.
  12. i agree with rachelm. baby budgies when young do tend to sleep on the ground until they learn to perch proberly
  13. the younger they are handled, the better the outcome. we handle our babies whilst still in the nest but when they have got their feathers. this will begin to form bonds and the budgie that accepts you most, well then take him in and handle him/her more. i would say to leave the female with him and work on the babies
  14. welcome im also new. please let us know what you want to know and ill gladly answer if possible

wow. thanks this is so helpful
  16. i have 2 really good breeding pairs. 1) i have a yellow-faced, green male with a sky blue female. they have a chick and 4 more eggs. they have already produced a purple male (this was from the last fathers genes), and 2 aqua colours, both male and female. 2) i also have a cobalt blue (which is also tinged with purple) that is with a yellow female. this is the females first batch of eggs and she has 3 chicks
  17. well done Budgie_Mad!! i cant wait to see what beautiful colours are going to show with these two parents also, dont check on the nest too often because otherwise there is a high probability of them rejecting the babies because you have put your smell around and they might not like it so just be cautious:) im happy for you:)
