Taming Budgie
I've had Kenny for about 4 months now . I have been trying to train him to step onto my finger. Once, about a month ago he stepped on & let me bring him out of his cage & back in & I thought " we've got this cracked". However now he will sometimes put 1 foot onto my finger & just stay there until I have to move my arm out as it is hurting my shoulder or use my hand as a stepping stone to fly out of the cage . It's very frustrating as I thought by now he would be well trained . Is it normal after a few months for him still not want to step up? or am I just going to have to be patient .

Unresponsive Budgie
Thanks both. I am going to keep him in his cage for the time being .I have been putting my hand in & he generally settles down after a bit . Guess I'll just have to be patient with him

Unresponsive Budgie
I have had Kenny for 3 weeks now. Kept him in his cage for about the first 2 weeks but have been letting him fly free most of the day since then . I have a perch set up in the room but when I let him out he sits on the window handle staring out chirping occasionaly at the world until it gets dark when he goes to his perch . He seems happy enough at the window but he doesn't go near his food, even on his perch I rarely see him eat & he is in my eye line. He's not interested in his toys, hardly sings. Half the time he has gone back into his cage when I've held it up to him & half the time I have to net him . Last night I had my hand touching his claws when he was in his cage on the perch & he briefly jumped onto my hand . Since then he won't let me near him . He's silent when I sit beside his cage & chat to him although sometimes I can see him listening . From what I have read I thought he would be hand tamed by now so am wondering if I'm doing anything wrong?

Can't Get Him Back In Cage
Sorry all for not replying . I didn't get any emails to notify me I had replies. . I was just coming on to post again . I had to leave him out for the night as he was much too quick for me to catch & I didn't think to turn the light out. I went to my friends the next day to get a net & when I came home he was in the cage. Three nights since then he has gone in willingly when I've held the cage to him & 3 times I've had to net him . He's still after 3 weeks very rarely interacts with me.He lets me touch his claws sometimes & will eat from a millet stick which I'm holding occasionally but he's silent when I sit beside his cage & chat to him . Have to admit it's very very frustrating .He sings some evenings for a while which is beautiful but some nights he just sits there not evening playing with his toys .

Letting Kenny Out
I let Kenny out for the first time yesterday , a friend of mine brought his budgie round for the day so we let them both fly free in the room - was lovely to see & hear . My friends bird went back today but Kenny seemed very happy to be free, singing away. I have put him back in his cage now - by holding the cage up for him to jump into . I'm intending to let him fly free in the room all the time eventually when I have him hand tamed but just going to let him out for a few hours for the time being. Does it matter what time of day I was to let him out?

Can't Get Him Back In Cage
While I was cleaning Kenny's cage he escaped . He's not hand tamed yet so I can't get him to my finger hence I've just been chasing him round the room but he just flies from my high book shelves to the curtain rail . I can't see any option but to leave him out but am scared he might freak out in the night . Anything I can do?

Very Quiet New Budgie
Thanks . I only have the one budgie & have been accused of being cruel because of this . I have 3 friends who have solo birds 2 of which are happy & will interact with them & one who just flies around the room when he's not on his perch & won't go near anyone. Mine has been a bit mad the last couple of days , rather than being more calm when I put my hand in the cage he has been climbing all over & sometimes jumping from his perch to his seed tray over & over again . He does sing sometimes & I've seen him preening, eating & drinking so I'm a bit confused as to what to do. I'm tempted to let him loose in the room but fear he may never be tame if I do that but feel a bit guilty leaving him in the cage as it's very small .

Very Quiet New Budgie
Thanks maesie , he's in the front room , . He's still quiet but I gave him some seed so he know's I'm his friend & he was preening a little while ago so I think he's happy enough. . A friend of mine has one & I've had her at mine several times so I knew about the radio.

Very Quiet New Budgie
I bought a budgie on Friday (today being Monday) I have kept him in his cage since then . He has a had a few bursts of tweeting & some nice singing Saturday evening but on the whole has been very quiet. I sit beside him & talk quietly several times a day & yesterday introduced my hand into his cage slowly . Sometimes he's fine & just sits on his perch & sometimes he gets scared. What do people think I should do in order to get him to sing more? Should I just leave him be for a few days? or should I try to hand feed him millet seed? What about some toys in the cage? Any advice welcome. Thanks
