Danger In The Nest Box
Just as a matter of interest. I to have a bonded pair. I tried to breed from the cock bird with another female and paired them up. No go, eventually after 2 other hens I returned the cock to the large aviary and immediately he went back to his original female he had been bonded with and now 6 weeks later he is still with her and they are inseperateable. And look out any other male who may fancy her. Then I have had a cockatiel bonded with a male budgerigar. Every where together - even to eating at the seed bowl. Certainly interesting hobby. Dazler2

Hi From Buzz And His His First Time Budgie Owner Mum!
Hi there, you appear to be doing everything right and he is just so lucky to have found you. Obviously a family who cares. The only thing I can add is maybe a small mirror in his cage because if he is use to being with others he could fret. I had a pet one many years ago and my Mum left the door open and he flew away. 2 weeks later I visited a friend who was keeping budgies and there he was in their aviary. My friend said he had been digging in the garden when my budgie landed on his head. They then put him in their aviary with others. I took him back home and a few days later he died. I put it down to fretting. With a little mirror they see themselves and obviously think its a mate. Good luck with Buzz! Best regards dazler2

Hi Charly and welcome! I am still finding my way around this site and places to post. So you are a fellow Queenslander? I am breeding a few at the moment and only allowing them 1 sitting because of the heat. Next year I think I will put them up about early May. I have a tin garden shed as a breeding room. However as soon as the weather warms up it becomes far too hot. And it has started already. How many budgies have you and are you going to breed this year? Best regards Dazler2

Hello There Forum
Hi Mat and welcome, You will find budgie keeping is a very exciting and rewarding hobby. I never think of them dying although from time to time you may lose some. One of the main things i have found is their diet and keep your eye out for dirty bottoms. There is a good book by John Scoble a well known Australian in the Budgerigar circle called "The Complete Book of Budgerigars" Always handy to have on hand for reference and advice. There is of course some wonderful info on this site. However I also like to have a book on hand for reference. Best regards Dazler2

Hello Bbc
Hi Corey and welcome! I am only a recent newbie here to and still finding my way around. You will find budgie breeding very interesting and fun. Particularly if you convert to cage breeding as you call it. I have taken it up again after many years. I used to breed and show when I was 15-16. Currently I have 6 pairs nesting and 12 chicks. You obviously have a large aviary? I prefer the cage breeding because this gives you control over their breeding. Best regards Dazler2

Hi there, Just came back and found your question. i have put up 6 pairs in seperate cages and have 2 youngsters in 1 & getting their feathers, 2nd pair sitting on 5 eggs, 3rd pair with 4 youngsters all with feathers and so curious:) 5th pair with 1 baby, 6th pair with 3 babies. I did post a question somehwre on here a couple of days ago about ivervectim because I have 1 bird in my aviary that has awful scaly legs and was wondering if it maybe caused by a mite or even mosquitoes? I have looked everywhere in the pet shops but cannot fnd ivervectim. I thought I also saw something they called Scatt on this site some time back but once again having trouble finding it. Would be great if someone has any suggestions. Thanking you in anticipation. Dazler2

Ivermectin- Where To Purchase
I have 1 budgie which seems to have scaly legs. I have never experienced it before. Maybe a mite of some kind or mossies? Other budgies are okay. I was thinking maybe ivermectin would help but cannot find it in any pet shops. I thought I saw a thing called Scatt on the net for similar but cannot find it now. I am on the gold Coast. Anyone with some advice please? Thanks so much. Dazler

Hallo Land Of Oz/budgies
Hi and welcome! I am only recently new to this forum myself after taking up the hobby again after a number of years. I have just started to breed some budgies and have 2 babies at present. An exciting time. I first bred budgies when I was around 16-17 and had great luck with them. To see how they have changed over the years I find a little hard to adjust to. I prefer the originals from all those years back. My reference book in those days and still is ( written by an Englishman) by the name of W.Watmough and the book is titled "The Cult of the Budgerigar". There are pics of all the various colours and the book is a wealth of information. Back in those days Budgies had 6 distinct spots and that is what I am hoping to get back to somehow. So I have an exciting and interesting time ahead. Best regards dazler2

Thanks so much folks for your welcomes! I am all excited because I put up 3 pairs a fortnight ago and now have 3 eggs. 2 from 1 and 1 from the second pair. The 3rd pair the female is not being receptive to the cock bird and if nothing happens soon i may have to seperate them and try again either with another cock bird or put them in a see through cage for a few days and see what happens. I have another 5 pairs to put up but still organising my cages. I purchased some double wire ones from e-bay and am impressed. Leaving all but one as large ones which gives the birds plenty of room. It means making other perches etc but I feel will be worth it. Best regards to all. dazler2
