  1. Thanks Finnie & Kaz. I was able to find an answer to my own question in some other posts I have been reading. We have decided to keep Saphire out of the aviary until he moults. This is due to Cheeky being an agressive bird. Cheeky has been responsible for killing 2 quails. Had to modify an old dog kennel to keep the quails in. So for Saphires safety best to keep him out till he can fly. Pity Jess isn't as dedicated as we thought. Saphire is a great bird. Hops up onto you finger, sits on your sholder. Runs around the house like no ones business. Maybe she may get enthused again before he moults. Cheers
  2. Hi everyone. I seem to only be coming on here for advice. Guess that is what you do when you are a noobe. We got given a young hand tamed budgie from a friend. Saphire is his name and there are pics on another post from me. Only been bought from a shop the week before. It was only slightly trained and Jess, my daughter, is only 9. She wanted to keep him separate from the aviary birds as a tame budgie. I slightly clipped his wings to stop him from flying too far in the house. He can't fly up but can flutter safely to the ground from a height. Thing is Jess has lost interest and we feel sorry for him being alone in the cage. Also common for noisy miners to torment him. So I want to put him in the aviary with the other budgies. Should I wait till he gets his flight feathers back, or can I put him in now? Thanks for your help.

No confusion at all. We have a very good bird vet near us at West Wallsend. I will get a better picture of Saphires face for a better appraisal. I will start treatment for scapy face now. I am amazed that you can tell from this picture that he has it. Thanks for all your help.

Thanks. I had a close look at Saphire with a magnifing glass. Couldn't see any holes in the cere, or evidence of mites. Looks a tad dry at the base of the ceree where it meets the beak. Also had a close look at all the others too. We sure got a workout whilst I was trying to catch them all one at a time. I am talking about me as well:wacko: Jaws seems to have a very dry cere. Appears to be flaky. But again no holes or evidence of mites. I will take them to the vet just in case. Cheers BJ
  5. Hi everyone. Jess's budgies are all thriving. We have had 2 new additions to the flock. A relative gave us 2 budgies, Jaws & Saphire. Jaws is from an old aviary and is a small budgie of unknown age. Saphire was just purchased from a shop 2 weeks ago. Saphire appears to be young and hand raised. So we decided to keep Saphire in a cage to be a hand raised budgie for Jess. Jaws is called Jaws because of his/her bite We would like some input into the birds sexes please. We had some great, informative feedback from the last pics and was asked to post some more when they were a bit older. So here they are..... Smokey..... Smakey & Aussie Jaws Cheeky Basil Saphire

Thanks for the info gb. I will definately get the book. I am also concerned about the quails now that you have said this about the cocks. We were only able to buy breeding pairs. And it tuns out that some of the ones that were supose to be hens have turned into cocks. So we have 4 cocks and only 2 hens. We think. We may have to find a way of geting rid of 3 cocks. So far they are all geting on really well. Although the budgies seem to have fun chasing them out of the sand bowl. Cheers

Here are some pics of my daughters new budgies and aviary she got for her 9th birthday. They are a starting point for her to start breeding. So we will definately be looking here for information and advice. She has already learnt the hard way that females bite hard! I have had to put wire on the inside and outside of the framweork to keep the noisy miners away. They started attacking the budgies through the wire straight away. Thanks Kaz. That helps me a heap. Jessica will be upset to know that she can't taim them in an aviary. Maybe she could buy a cage and buy a new budgie to train. I have read that about the nesting boxes. Her budgies are only 8 weeks old. The breeder we bought them from said to put the boxes in now for them to sleep in if they want, and that any eggs laid would be sterile. I like what you have said, and will wait. Jess will take some pics today and I will post them. Thanks Heaps.

Hi all I am new to budgies and my 9 year old daughter Jessica has just bought 4 budgies with her birthday money and they are in a 2.4 x 1.8 x 2m aviary. She spent 6 hours sitting in and outside the aviary the first day we got them. She will be a dedicated little budgierist. My question is, is it possible to finger train them in the aviary or should we put them in a cage and train them individually? And if in a cage, how do we do it? One bird at a time in the cage until it is trained? Thanks for your advice
