    they are beautiful birds
  2. i have now got a new cage off of the person who gave me the two new birds. i got it for $50 when im guessing its worth $180ish. it is in fairly good condition. apparantly it has been cleaned, but i am still going to disinfect it. i have plenty of food and water bowls that came with my large cage, that will go in this one, i just need some perches, and toys. this cage will act as a breeding/nursery cage. i have decided to not use this site to try and diagnose illnesses, and to rely on it more for just basic facts. this is because it is very unfair of me to expect peolple to be able to diagnose illnesses without any photos to look at. i am still trying to get some photos on here but it is proving to be very difficult. dont worry about the birds because i am getting help to do with that subject from him. he has been breeding for over 20 years, and has had expeiriances with this subject. he has also offered to lend me medicine for some illnesses that only need treating one or two times, as he thinks it would be a waste of my money to purchase them if i only have a few birds at the moment.
  3. i will keep trying, but my last attempts have failed also i put them on our old computer instead of the laptop. we are getting rid of the old computer, and it currantly isnt plugged in.is there any other way to get photos on here other then using photo bucket? the best can do at the moment is to describe it. it pretty much looks like the bird is having a bad hair day. the feathers on its head are ruffled up and some are missing. there are no other feathers missing that i can see, none have fallen out (but i only got the birds yeasterday so its still early days) otherwise the ferthers look fairly normal, maybe slightly droopy at most. i know that it must be hard to diagnose this sort of problem without any pictures. thanks for your help.
  4. was just doing some reading up on the topic of moulting. could it be french moult? i am now starting to question the birds age. althought its cere looks clearly like a male, and i read somewhere that if there are no black lines on there forehead then they are at least over six months, which in that case it must be. any suggestions?
  5. the new birds have arrived. the male is moulting. they are currantly in quantine. other wise they seem to be in great condition. that boy one has one heck of a bite!!!!! ouch :/

this is a very similar setup to what i planned to eventually have i think it looks great, the only thing that i was planning on doing differently was to have a wire mesh wall between the breeding area and the avairy part, mainly because i was worried that i would have a problem with birds escaping. how much did this aviary you bourght cost?
  7. hi um i was wondering the same thing, why is it that you need this special equipment, wheres a mother bird just kind of leans over and yeah all that stuff. im not wanting to use a short cut or any thing, or question anyones knoledge, i was simply wondering, and was interested

the other day i was out side near the bird cage and decided to go and chack on them. i found my young male, seeming to be whispering to my very young female (i think its a girl). he had his head right up next to the girls, and was quietly chattering. i found this quite spooky, because they were looking at me, and it was like they were talking about me. does any one elses birds do that ?
  9. okay so i have bren unable to load the photoes but i will try again soon i have now got a definite date for the arrival of my new birds. i will also be buying the cage that they are in for $50. the cage is roughly half the size of the larger cage that i have. i will probably use this as a nursey cage if every thing goes well. i am almost certain that the juvenile bird that i have is a female. its cere is and even light blue all over appart from lighter colour (almost white) around the nostrills. i have also gotten more info on the new birds that i am getting. the female has had exactly 2 clutches and has been an excelent mother. and the male is almost one year old. so i have decided that it might be better to keep them both in a smaller cage and then introduce a nest box. i figured that because they have been together longer, that there might be a greater chance of them being a successful pair. i am not sure if it works that way but it would save a lot of time.
  10. yep will post photos soon. i actually took pictures of them yesterday, as well as all the cages that i have. i am also wanting identification of gender for one of them (the juvenile) i have been told that it is most likely a female, but still not sure. i went to this breeders place and he gave me heaps of advice, as well as showed me his set up. it quite impressive, with about 12 breeding cages. he has a bird with what he thinks is a fairly rare mutation. it pretty much looks like a large featherduster. it is grey, with really long floppy feathers, and really large for a budgie. he says he bred one before and that it only lived for 6 months. this person has also offered to give me some medication for them if they gt worms or other parasites. the new birds should be arriving soon. i am planning to quantine them for about 6 weeks. then swap the males. will post again soon

okay thanks. yes both parents are in good health. plus it just occured to me that if i do have a problem then a friend of my dad, breeds budgies proffesionally, so he would be able to help me out. yes i am getting ahead of my self, its just that for about two years ive been wanting to breed and it is only now that i have the opportunity, as have recently got a job, and am able to pay for everything my self. but i have read your post that you mentioed and have taken all into acount. i also read a topic post (what ever it is called) about being prepared to breed, an i believe i am. i will try not to rush into things, and any help that any on can give will be muchly appretiated. thanks
  12. im sorry i think u might of misread/misunderstood my post. the female is two years old, it was the male that i was unsure of the age of, and that is why i was planning on pairing her up with a different male. the female has only had a few clutches, and hasnt bred for awhile. i am sure of this as her owner now doesnt beed them, it was her previous owner whom did. her current owner is giving them to me because of her lack of spare time, and difficulty with finding some one to care for them when she is away. i was aware of somthing to do with putting the female in the breeding cage for awhile before introducing the male, but i wasnt aware of needing to quantine. i was going to spray all my birds with a mite spray, that my grandad uses on his pigeons, that is also suitable for budgies (my grandad breeds pigeons for shows and racing And selling.) thank you very much for the advise, it wasvery helpful, and i appolagise for the misunderstanding (i will do all that you have suggested that applies)

i understand that heating is needed for hand rearing, and i am unable to get a heating pad, or anything like that. i am not planning on hand rearing at the moment (though i might once i have got the hang of breeding on its own), but if somthing was to happen like a rejected chick, or somthing, would using a hot water bottle, be good enough, if not is there any other options.
  14. i havent actually started breeding yet, but i thourght it would be better to make sure i have everything ready, an all the facts right before i actually start. i am using a small cage that i have as a breeding cage. yesterday i built a nestbox, and attached that to the cage. i am planning to use a female bugdie that i am getting this weekend, and a male that i already own. t he female that im getting is two years old, and has apparently had 1lot of babies already, which she raisd perfectly. she come wih a male, but is age is not known, just a guess at around 6 months to a year, and i would feel better if i knew i was using a male that was definately of age. the male that ive got is at least 2 years old. i got him off a breeder in the town that i live in. he is quite a large budgie, but has been very good with budgies that i have introduced the cage. that ia all that i have done at the moment, so yeah

i am unable to at the moment, but it is a light blue colour. that doesnt really matter as i will probably be getting a female soon from someone that i work with. will the small cages that i described on the other post that i made be big enough, and how many birds can i fit in the large cage i dicribed. i know some one who breeds budgies, and has heaps of avairys and a shed which he has breeding boxes in and ect, so if there is a problem he can probably help me out with that

okay thanks. yeah i was aware of the ages for breeding but i didnt know that it could provoke the young one into breeding to early. it has only been out of the nest for 3 weeks. i cant remove it but i am able to slide down the little door the is above it, so i will do.
  18. i want to breed budgies and i wasnt sure which was the best, or whgich ways i could do it. i have both large cages and small (you can see the dimentions under my post under the introduce yourself thing) i wanted to know if i could breed then in the big cage, supplying 2 nesting boxes at the same hight, with all birds in there, or whether i need to use the small cages and put pairs in them individually. Or if i am in need of a new size cage, or other method, all reply greatly appretiated

hi, obviosly i am new to this forum. i currantly have 3 budgies, 2 male, and one juvenile, which i am not sure of the gender is yet. i have one large cage which they are all in. it is about 160cm tall, 800cm wide, and a deptyh of 51cm. it contains a breeding box (not that im expecting anything in it at the moment) i have two small cages (one which once contained the juvenile budgie, which i planned to keep as a domestic pet, but it became hard to tame after i put the cage next to the main one, an it became paniced every time it heard the other birds, so i ended up putting it in with the others) the cage mentioned above is 49cm tall, 43cm wide, and a depth of 35.5cm the small cage i found at a local tip, with very little damage, i am planning to clean it up and use it. its dimentions are, 61.5cm tall, 44cm wide and a depth of 35cm i might be getting two budgies of breeding age from someone i work with, one male, and one female. cage might also be concluded. my goal is to breed budgies, and sell them (im not expecting to make much of a profit, it will mainly be a hobby) so yeah that is the basic run down of my current situation.
