  2. I have been checking my budgies every few weeks trying to work out their sex, I am certain with 6 of them a perfect blend of 3 males and 3 females. My other 8 I thought I better just check with everyone. Snowy and Shadow Snowy on the left I believe is a male and shadow on the right a female Tweety I believe may be female although while in quarantine i thought it was male Blossom I have thought from the start female but i have my doubts now Grimmis I am confident that grimmis is a he but cant hurt to check he kept hiding behind another male (best picture i have) Rex (in the middle) wouldnt sit still but got him im thinking female but dont have a clue really Snowflake left and Cheecky right (both males?) still in quarantine

ouch that aint good, I hadnt thought about snakes, there has been a few snakes in the area because we have a little creek not far from here and a man made one to feed it that comes right up near behind my house (which only has water when it rains.) I have even seen snakes in my backyard about 5-6 years ago. Good thing my budgies stay high and because all my perches are hanging from the roof, they shouldnt be caught easily. But the quails litterally are sitting ducks. May be a stupid question but can snakes get through 12mm x 12mm gaps?

Nice aviary I am very jealous of the numbers you have filling it aswell, my aviary is probably close to the size of yours and has 12 budgey's which is fairly empty. Good work did you get the aviary installed or put it up yourself?

Thanks the fibro walls are insulated with a low grade insulation but it is better then none i guess. the birds really do enjoy the area. Also in response to Kaz I had a good look at the aviary looking for where to put the breeding division and thought the area looks to good to break it up. So I looked outside the cage and think down the right side of the cage I may very well have enough room to have an extension. with room for probably 10 breeding cages stacked 2 high. Elevated 1m off the ground. (The gap is about 4m long and approximately 1m wide. I have colorbond leftover which i can use to roof it off so I may have another project for 6 months.) What would everyone's thoughts be on this idea? I would like to let everyone know I really appreciate the ideas and thoughts that have helped me so far.

Well with breeding boxes is it safe to put them within the aviary? or would i need to make a seperate room for them?
  9. Rodiss replied to Rodiss's post in a topic in Aviaries
Its height is 2.4m at the front and 2.34m at the rear, also with the remaining dementions being 3.6m x 3.6m what would be a safe & good number of budgeys to have within the aviary keeping in mind colony breeding will be attempted around september until early november, before backing off due to heat. I will attemp breeding the 2 pairs that are over a year old at the moment in seperate cages in the coming months. Also may be getting a few experienced pairs from my cousin who may have to move house, which ill do the same with.

Job Finished and birds are currently loving their new home. I officially had finished on sunday releasing my 6 original budgeys and my quarantined birds went in monday. I will give a detail price list once i sort out all my dockets, but yeah all is looking good. Here are a couple of pics. Tha back wall The Frame First Use (obviously didnt have quite enough straw) Birds enjoying the dowel perch i had hanging up (now a ladder because I found some nice branches) The finished product This is a picture with only 8 budgeys and 13 quails within the cage as it stands at the moment. (plus 4 more birds)

A couple of things have happened since my last post but the aviary construction has begun. I am going to get concrete delivered some time in the next two weeks, maybe/hopefully this saturday. but i have already leveled off the area for the slab to be put in. So here are the photos of the job waiting for the cement. From afar Closer up The birds watching construction take place (lol)

hmmm it makes sense that the mice proof wire does could in handy as a ladder for mice. That is something I shall have a think about. If i have the untreated pine wood structure on the inside of the cage what can i put in to prevent the birds getting to it? I got a half quote from my friend and he is gunna do it for material cost if i provide some labor to help him. he thinks maybe $260-$280 delivered just gotta pile it in. the colorbond at the moment i have found a little cheaper but still searching so might be creeping under the $1000 dollar mark. Also with the concrete I intend on moving the aviary with me when i get my own house. So I want 100 mm thick so dad can use the slab to put a shed on it. Unless he grows attached to it, then i get to plan a whole new aviary. I have planned to call around for materials all week but keep getting distracted with every one else... Especially watching the budgies hehe.

okay Im going to get some mice proof wire for around the bottom up 2 ft. How did you find the mesh suppliers? The wood I havee lined up is untreated pine yes the birds will be able to chew on the wood. However i can make it so they dont get the opportunity. I am going to look around recycling yards for the colorbond. Just got a price from bunnings.

Here is the basic design of the aviary its dimensions are 3.6m x 3.6m and is 2.4m High There will be a security door, 600mm x 600m in the front left corner. (not pictured) The back will be fully colorbond and each side will be half colorbond and half wire. This is explained with colour in the paint picture. The roof will be half colorbond and half wire in line with the sides. The colorbond area will be insulated with some spare insulation sheets leftover from doing my house to keep em cool. A shade cloth will also be used to prevent even more heat. $392 The concrete 4m x 4m x 100mm thick from shop $332 delivered plus $60 hire for mixer (may be getting cheaper through a friend) $201 Wooden beams 18 lengths 2.4m + 16 lengths 3.6 m $098 Aviary Wire 30m x 1.2m with gaps 12.7mm x 12.7mm $060 6 Fibro panels for roof (insulation free) $282 20 Colorbond panels 1.8m x 600mm $1033 Total Cost (however looking for longer colorbond panels for walls) so likely to increase $30-$40 Plus additional costs which will be added later on such as breeding room, and perches What are your thoughts?

Here are my GF's two birds which i might be able to snare for my aviary if things go my way lol... A very young couple which looks likely to be a male & a female so might end up breeding. I have Pics of 1 but not the other. Lucky- & Blossom - (pics to come) Lol lucky is so active he is a joy and i bring him to my house (going to bring blossom soon) and he starts tweeting (a specific tweet when he knows he is going to see my budgey's then they tweet back, I just open the food doors for both cages and join them up and lucky flies in with them. The worst is home time lol not his fav time, he wont just fly back will he. Hehe Lucky escaped and ran Just a little question what would I call (colours) lucky (I think its a male spanial)
  18. Is one of these clear enough
  19. No close ups as of yet, need to get more good batteries for the camera, all the cheap ones wont let me take pictures.
  20. Mozzie & Bubbles Mozzie has been under my care for a year and was a couple of months old when i got him While Bubbles has only been under my care for about 4 months and I can really only guess as to her age. They are very affectionate and usually follow each other around the cage and I will usually catch the male feeding the hen at least once a day. Im hoping to get them breeding but dont want to do so if it will cause them problems.

Thanks for that the thing with snowy is she has had little bits of blue and pink go into her cere it was changing every couple of days. But it has stayed the same as the photo for a couple of weeks now. The other thing is with snowy her wings have been given a modified clip which allows her to get a little rise when she flies but not for long, would this make a large aviary with flying room a problem for her or is there anything i should consider?

Hello all I have a fairly small flock, four strong. I got my first pair (both cocks) of budgey's about a year ago from the markets ( a christmas present). Mozzie-A deep blue body with white head Buddy-A light blue body with white head after about 6 months sadly I awoke to Buddy still and lifeless at the bottom of my cage. So i needed to find a new friend for Mozzie, so I called my cousin up a novice breeder and went looking for a friend. Snowy-A pure white baby bird (still unknown what sex) now 6 months old The pair have gotten on really well ever since and recently i decided to double my flock (for breeding in the future). Bubbles - a Hen with a blue body and a white with black stripes head (hard to explain) which is about 8 months old. Rascal - a cock that is young a nice yellow back with green/blue front. The birds are soon going to become housed in a large aviary so i dont have to let them out in my room for their flying needs, and eventually breed. However I have concerns for the suitability of Snowy as a breeding bird due to a slight deformity in its feet. I will be posting photos in the next couple of days.
