  1. One thing to remember is that Birds breed int he wild and don't need us to do much. The best thing to do Is only distrub them twin a day. Once in the morning and the other at night. But mostly , let them do what comes natural.

How about a yellow winged blue
  3. ...and no they are not rare. About as common as most varieties.

You must also give a Vitamin D suppliment. They need the vitamin D to process the Calcium and phosphorus. Cod liver oil is a good source of Vitamin D. Calcivet = Contains Calcium, Vitamin D3 Guaranteed Analysis: Calcium (Ca++) as Calcium borogluconate 33g/L Vitamin D3 25000i.u/L
  5. The hen could have been startled and took the chick with it out of the box. How deep are your boxes Nerwen?
  6. Daz replied to Joey's topic in Breeders Discussion
If you can't get her to a vet put two drops of Olive oil to the vent. It will be drawn in and then place her in a warm place. Hospital cage if you have one. I would also give one drop of Calcivet to the beak.
  7. Sorry Kaz, I have read some posts hear that people say they were surprised to see eggs in the nest or a chick had hatch some time ago. It is obvious that they hadn't checked the nest box for a few days. I read your point as to when the best time was to check but it should be made clear that you must check the box every day.

  9. Very Good. One thing I would add to the section on how often to check the nest box.... Check the nest box at least once a day. The hen could have died from being egg bound and the chicks, depending on age, would need to be moved.
  10. Chicks can start to look after themselves at the time that the tail starts to form a point. approximately 4 weeks. Some show breeders like the chicks to stay as long as possible in the nest so that they have the parents "force" feeding them. It helps to develop a larger bird. For this reason I have deeper nest boxes to keep them in.
  11. I actually don't clean the boxes until the chicks have left the box. I might add some additional wood shavings but I let the chicks develop a natural immunity to diseases. I do clean wet nest boxes and check why they are that way. I haven't had any though.
  12. I would actually read up on Mega as you have been ill informed. Mega is a secondary condition which can results from stress, (Which is not a bacterial infection) before shooting down the advice given to you i'd do some research. Many of us have had mega or known some one with it. So can speak on the subject. By the way Megabac is a medication not a disease.
  13. Great to hear Nerwen.

Nathan my breeding cabinets are used not only for breeding but some can have the deviders removed and become stock cages for my show team. They are also used as a nursery.
  15. If the hen is a cinnamon and the chicks are cinnamon then the cock is either a cinnamon or split to one. If you post a photo of a chick over 3 weeks we should be able to tell the sex. Make sure the room is lit well and don't use a flash.

just a push for those that are thinking of their Aviary.

Nathan if you want some photos, click on my signature and you can look through my website on my breeding.
  18. Love spangles. Nerwen have you thought what variety you would like to start showing? If you could get some PR rings on those chicks you could show in the last show of the year. Wynnum in November. No hurray though as We have the first show of the year in February. If your coming to the Auction tomorrow, you can talk to Greg about the ring.
  19. In a breeding room you have more control on the pairings and also how the chicks are raised. http://www.flexi.net.au/~dwellsadsl/aviary/PR-040.jpg You stop the pairs when you wish and move chicks when there is problems. No all goes well but it's better than colony breeding.
  20. I buy them through my club but they will be posted directly to me.
  21. Spray the nest boxes with Vetafarm AIL while they are empty. You can spray the adutl birds no problems. . Wipe the hens cere and feet with good quality baby oil once a day for four days. You can leave her in the nest box.
  22. Wow change vet this one doesn't know what he is talking about. Mega is not a bacteria it's a fungus. This is Mega. Most birds have it but for some reason some are infected by it. It is a secondary disease. Karen can tell you about the trouble it causes. I have had it but have it under control.. at the moment. Most aviaries have it. Baytril won't help. Amphotericin B is the current medication to use. Commonly found in Fungalin or Megabac C.
  23. I use ordinary Baby Oil once a day and gentally rub it in. The Mites hate it and it causes no problems
  24. Interesting comments. A nest box to a budgie is to encourage the bird to breed. Nest boxes shouldn't be introduced until the birds are at breeding maturity. Many agree that this is 12 months old. Reading Nerwen's reply to your post, I don't find it rude only informative.
