The chicks legs do extend during the development period and it is not unusual to find that the day after putting on a snug ring that is has come off. I check every day to make sure all is okay especially the chicks. After getting the ring on, you must keep checking it encase a piece of wood shaving or seed doesn't get caught under neath it. This will cause major problems with blood circulation later on.

.......using a tube to breath under water at the moment
  5. Sorry to hear this Kaz. Hopefully this is just a minor attack of FM and they will grow their flights back.
  6. I'd put the grey green hen to him, the recessive pied wouldn't do him any good.
  7. Budgies are a vicious bird. Nice when tamed but ... Some are not so nice. I have just under 90 birds now and you must alway keep an eye on them.
  8. Wynnum Redland bay show tomorrow Nerwen... Pitty he's not in there. February is the next show. Our show and I hope you have a few birds in. Those chicks are nice.
  9. Drematic weight loss in a budgie is a sign that there is a problem. It could be worms to mega. The best thing that you can do is to take him to an Avarian Vet and get him seen to.
  10. There are different levels of French moult. I have had a few and have a routine to try and spot it. It seems to be successful. I have French molters that are 10 months old and going strong. I have kept one for breeding. The ones i have had haven't been severe. Couple of runners that have grown there feathers back after a few months. I haven't had a French molter in 6 months... touch wood Routine seems to be working. Oh didn't stop breeding just concentrated on doing it better.
  11. Yes Budgies don't recognise each other as Brother sister or father daughter etc. It is common for a father to attach his new son thinking he is a rival or even trying to mate with his daughter when she leaves the nest.
  12. Does this mean they get younger every moult

Recessive Grey (rg) Recessive Grey you need two recessives to get a grey in this type Grey (G) this is a dominant grey gene. For a visual grey you need a Grey SF and Blue Mutant 1. Bird Tracker is based on the book "A guide to Colour Mutations & Genetics in Parrots" by Dr Terry Martin BVSc. You will need to know a basic idea of genetics which you can down load for that site.
  14. .... count the growth rings
  15. It is a question we get a lot of, with good reason. Many people want to know if they have been sold a bird that isn't a chick. The minimum age of a chick from a pet store should not be less than 8 weeks old. I say should not be but this is not always the case. Some breeders sell chicks to the shops as soon as they can this is wrong. It takes 28 days for a chick to start to begin feeding itself with the help of the parents. It is around this time that they start to come out of the nest box. But still need the parents to feed them. After 35 days they should be on their way to looking after themselves. I take the chicks from their parents at 42 days and place them in the nursary with other chicks. You will see the older ones feeding the younger ones from time to time. During this time there is some weight loss. I would give them until they are 54 days old to become self reliant before selling them. My chicks actually stay in the nursery until they are 90 days old and then move to the Junior flight. If you buy from a pet store, they should be about 8 to 10 weeks old, if not you might need to get them a lot of extra attention.
  16. Welcome and enjoy. :bluebudgie:
  17. He is a recessive pied but can't see her markings (poor old eyes ) Can you get a photo of her back or a description.
  18. genetics percentages are not perfect. Paired Spangle to Spangle 13 chicks and only one Double Factor. Hardly 25%.
  19. Jnr Boss isn't split to cinnamon is he? Hence the pink eyes of a young cinnamon.
  20. Elly is right also budgies like camels can go weeks with out water.. makes it hard to give medication in the water. If they don't like the taste, they won't drink it. Welcome to the forum
  21. Very interesting. I have heard two ideas on the lacewing. One it is a composite of the ino gene and the cinnamon gene, the other that it is a gene. You hear from some breeders that the bird is split to lacewing. If this was the case lacewing to lacewing should give all lacewing. But yours is definately lutinos. - Interesting.
  22. What was the parents again Karen.
  23. I have used a match stick before. I didn't have an eye dropper handy and dipping the dead end of a match stick (after removing the red part) into the feeding solution, i found it easier to drip the solution to the chicks beak. It worked until the hen started to feed the chick it self. Now I keep an eye dropper handy.
  24. We are asked this question a lot when they are not breeding, not feeding the chicks or are sick or have died. The question we should be asking is... What am I doing wrong? If the birds aren't breeding most of the time it is some thing you have done wrong. From the wrong set up to picking birds that are not ready for breeding. Budgies don't have a switch that you can just turn on for breeding. If the birds are sick or dying. The issue is that either you have done something wrong or are doing some thing wrong. Take a step back and have a good look at what you are doing. look at Feed, Water, your aviary, your management.. something will be a miss. I invite the other breeders to post an area that needs to be discussed and what they are doing about it. Cleanliness is most important. Food should not be left long in hot weather or it will foal. Water should be changed once a day. Aviary floors should be kept clean. easy if you have a concrete floor but if you have an earth floor then get a fork and turn the soil. A little lime will keep it sweet. Once a month should be adequate. Breeding cages should be clean once a week or more if needed. Nest boxes should be given fresh wood shavings once a month when you have chicks. I add to the existing shavings and only replace between rounds. Disinfectant of a type suitable to the birds should be used regularly. I spray the breeding cages, flights once a week. With F10. But Vetafarm's Disinfectant is also good.
  25. I'd say the dominant pied was a cobalt
