  1. By cool I just meant that I appreciated seeing on that video which parts of the budgie shone under UV light. I haven't done it to my budgie yet- I don't think I will, as I'm still not convinced that it's harmless. I'm a bit confused- are you saying that it might actually be good for my budgie to have it since he's kept indoors? We do live in the sunny state of QLD but he doesn't get direct sunlight very often, as I have noticed that even when I have given him the option he prefers to move himself into the shadows.
  2. I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you even though you've taken such perfect care
  3. I wouldn't worry about the air pocket. Leave it a bit longer, you never know, it might still hatch, especially if you aren't 100% sure when she started sitting...
  4. ^ Aww I've never seen finches in suburban Brisbane.. nice to hear that there are many of them in other parts of SEQ, not so nice that they're being pests to your budgies. That's what I thought first of all too, Elly.. couldn't picture a cage with any space another bird can get in that could also be safe to budgies. But having said that.... I think they are way smaller. Would be interested to know the cage set up. lil miss I hope that everyone's advice has given you a solution that will work out well for you
  5. When that vet was at Brighton (the one that's now at Chermside), my mum used to ring up and get advice over the phone for our budgies! That was obviously free.... so, I am happy (sort of) to pay a big bill in future if I ever need an avian vet. Now that I live near there, they are the nearest avian vet to me so I have their number on the fridge. I really don't know of any others on the north side. Sorry that was no help at all. Sucks to hear that they're really expensive though, but I'm not surprised...

Awww How is he doing? Looks like he is greening up a little, like my guy

    Aww... I love fledgling photos
  8. That's really sad but it sounds like you did all the right things.
  9. Here, I got a photo of Cosmo's weird eating habit: It's nowhere near as funny as Maxie though! I think it's a good thing that I don't have Maxie- she would develop a complex because I would be laughing hysterically at her every time I saw her eating!
  10. Aww cool
  11. Oh.. well I was right after all then haha

    I'm so sorry
  13. Ahahaha I love it Cosmo's only weird eating habit (that i can think of) is that he has a dish like that too, and whenever he is finished eating, all these oat hulls are sitting on the lid of the dish. Somehow he must pick them up and eat them outside the dish, but for every other type of seed, the husks are on the inside of the dish.
  14. Oh yeah-- it is a black light.... no idea how I got the idea it was UV! Well, it probably wouldnt' work on Cosmo then, because he doesn't have any white bits and his yellow is too dark to show up. Silly me
  15. We have one of those long fluorescent-style light things that if you turn it on in a dark room, it is ultraviolet- so it only shows up white things in the room, and they look super bright. We have never put it on when Cosmo is around for fear that we'd damage his eyes. But then again, we put them in unnatural light all the time, and they see differently from us, so I have no idea about any of this stuff. Just curious as to whether it would be safe to turn the ultraviolet light on with Cosmo around? I would be curious to see what he looked like in UV light but I don't think I'd actually do it unless I was dead certain it's safe to do so. I also don't know whether we would be able to see all the cool UV stuff on budgies even if we did have a UV light on them.... maybe only other budgies can see it.
  16. Are you still keeping him with the other bird? It might be a good idea to separate them.
  17. Whoa... I can see that the answer has been given a number of times, but I am more confused than ever! There are probably so many different things about budgie genetics that I should know first before I try to understand the YF/goldenface thing. But just to even clarify: - Can I even know whether Cosmo is YF2 or goldenface? - If so, how can I tell which one he is? - Would everybody agree with this classification? Cory - your budgie is gorgeous!
  18. Awww cute I think the vibrant adult feathers of budgies are amazing, but there's nothing like that sweet little baby face. Oushi still looks cute
  19. Oh I'm so sorry to hear that.. thanks for the update. Could you try ringing your avian vet to talk over the phone? Since their treatment didn't work maybe they could give you a quick piece of advice over the phone, obviously not an entire consult or anything but you could just try that?
  20. I used to get my babies wrong a lot, because I would wait until I could see whether there was blue or not and I just tried to guess if the blue was close enough to the nostrils, and if there was a lot of blue on the cere I assumed it was a boy. When the penny finally dropped that baby boys are PINK and girls are white/blue then it became a lot more accurate. If I'm in doubt (with the varieties that are easy to sex that is), I assume it's a hen, because they can look quite blue at times, but boys' are usually quite obviously darker and fleshier coloured. I can see the differences in those young ones too. Wish I'd known this when I was actually breeding lol would've saved a lot of my budgies from being named for the wrong gender!
  21. ^ That's a shame... would even the one who got to keep the box abandon the rest if half were removed?
  22. Maybe you could get another box in a separate cage, and then take out half the eggs and put them in there and see if the hen will sit on them. If not then at least you saved half the eggs with the other hen. Otherwise they will most likely lose a lot of chicks anyway if not all. It sounds very sweet, I would love to watch those two together and see what makes them tick! I've never heard of that before! But i guess we have to be careful of their natural instincts even when they are acting out of the ordinary.
  23. Not if you're renting  We'd have a lot more pets if we owned our own place.

Cool, nice to learn more about you! Is it fun living on a campsite? Do you get to meet lots of people? Sounds like you have a great set up there with lots of animals would be great.
  25. Oh okay - I think you're right then- I was thinking buttercup would be a more buttery colour like creamino but now that you point it out - of course, buttercup the flower is very bright. So they probably were lutino.. how cool! I love unexpected surprises.
