  1. Here's a picture, I can't get one of her back as she isn't actually my bird, I'm asking for a friend. I'm pretty sure she's a Cobalt/Violet YF1..is she? Is she anything else? (I don't believe the flash was used in the picture, not sure)
  2. Okat thank you. So I was close on most of those. :fear
  3. If I bred a Skyblue/Violet yf1 with a Mauve Normal/Rec. Pied, I'd get %50 YF1 and %50 Normals, right? What colours would they be, Cobalt/Violets? And a Skyblue/Violet Clearflight Pied Opaline Spangle with a YF2 Cobalt/Violet recessive Pied, I'd get %100 split for Rec. Pied, lots of Clearflight Pieds, Spangles, and YF2's, (don't know what percentages) and various combinations of those, and all of them would be either Cobalt/Violet SF or DF, am I right?
  4. I have been told 10 months too, but to use him and not let him raise the babies. I followed some advice to use a 10 month old cock before too, but when I used this advice the cocks were silly things who didnt mate properly, often got in the nests and broke or addled the eggs, and didnt feed the hen...just sat on the perch looking stupid. So now I prefer to wait till 12 months. okay. This bird that is 6 months old is already trying to mate with the girls in the aviary, and feeds his 'mate' (female he bonded with) all the time. He is quite 'charming' to all the females..do you think he would be a good father when he is older? (I'll breed him at 12 months and let him help her raise the babies anyway)
  5. Okay then. But 10 months, with an older female, is alright isn't it? That's what I've heard, and seen people say on here too I think.
  6. Okay so what are the things that can go wrong if the male doesn't help with raising the chicks? I'm not necessarily doing this, just finding out if it would be a viable option..
  7. Is it okay to pair a young (as in 6,7 month old) male to a 2 year old female...so all the male has to do is fertilise the eggs, and let the female raise the babies (perhaps foster some if there are many and only do one clutch) so he doesn't have to do anything? I'm just wondering if this would be okay, as I would only pair up birds that are 12 months +, maybe the male 10 months..how would 6 or 7 months be? And not all the time of course, just once he would be alright wouldn't he? Thanks.
  8. Okay thanks all for the help. And melbournebudgies, I just don't know what the person's plans are, so I'll have to ask her..which I will do..sorry didn't explain it very well.
  9. Dropping the bird off to a vet/carer may be possible, I'm going to try to organise it..and where we are camping, there are no vets or anything, the nearest is 30mins from where I live. (3 hours from where I am camping) But I will try. A vet or carer is the best thing for her. Would it be a good idea to put some of that food in her beak first, so she gets a taste and knows it's edible? Yeah I was thinking use the handrearing mix, and/or some soft fruits and bread..Anything to encourage her to eat..it would be best if she was young, I would know basically what to feed her..the other option is that she is brain damaged (been hit in the head with something), or old..this is what has happened to my birds (lovebirds, even chickens) when they are either one of the three of those...Young, old, or seriously sick.. Either way, if she's not young she's dying..at least, that is basically my experience lol.
  10. I haven't managed to phone yet, but I will before I leave..and what exactly should I look for to see if she is indeed a very young bird? All I know, basically, is if they don't have all their feathers, or shorter feathers than adults..don't eat or fly..or has scruffy feathers..is there anything else? Of course, if they have lighter markings than adults..most babies look like the females of the species right? Also, the friend who found and has the bird at the moment has been feeding her bits of soft fruit and water with some honey in it..(the bird doesn't actually eat, but she feeds her by putting it in her beak) Is this okay? I mean, not long term of course, but the bird would be okay on this for the day or two the person has had her?
  11. Yes I would most definetly not bring her any where near any of my birds..and I'm putting her in a cage that I don't use for my birds anyway, and don't really ever plan to.. I have only seen her once (just yesterday) when I went to the person's place. As far as I could see, she had all her feathers, though it is quite possible she is just fledged..I can't remember exaclty what she looked like. As for how she as found..to be honest, I'm not sure..but I think she was found on the ground, unable to fly..the person who found her does know enough to have searched for any birds like her near her when she was found. If she is a fledgling, then I would need to bring handraising mix to feed her with..I have some spare, for budgies, cockatiels, and/or rainbow lorikeets..would that work for a fruit dove? I'm not sure, seeing as those kinds of birds don't eat seeds, and the mix is for birds that do.. Though considering she isn't eating and flying..it is highly likely she is too young.
  12. She can't fly..at least, not very well...she can fly to the highest perch in the cage she is in at the moment (around 1 foot off the floor) with some difficulty, but not higher.
  13. Okay Atherton is FNQ..I know of one wildlife carer who takes care of wild birds found hurt, baby birds, etc..about 30mins away..But I also have a problem..see, a friend actually found her and is giving her to me tomorrow as she has no idea how to take care of her..(not that I do either) and she is meeting me at the place I am going camping for a week, with the bird..the place is around 3 hours away and I don't think anyone would drive me back down to where the carer is...So I have to try to take care of the bird during that week before I go back and can give her to the carer..(hoping she survives of course) So I really need to know what the problem is and how on earth I can keep her alive before she can go to a vet/carer. Edit: Thanks for the phone number, I will call them and ask for help.
  14. For pictures? Yes, that is how I decided she is a Superb Fruit Dove..I'm only not sure because there is a chance she may be some other kind of fruit dove but I haven't found any other picture more similar to her than a superb fruit dove. For help, I've searched as well..and found only one good forum..and I've posted there as well, but here too..hopefully I'll get a reply today or tomorrow morning, which is when I need it. And yes she is a wild bird..I might be able take her to the vet but that would be tomorrow afternoon at the earliest, and after that I'm having to take her with me when I leave for a week, as I have to force-feed her because she won't eat..I need to have some idea as to what the problem is.
  15. Hi I know your not supposed to ask questions about the health etc of other animals in here..but I've been searching for any forums about this bird and I can only find very few forums that actually have a 'pigeons and doves' area...so I'll ask here too, just in case..I hope it isn't a problem? If it is please just remove this. I've found what I believe to be a Superb Fruit Dove..and she's sick..can anybody who happens to have one of these or has any idea as to what to do, please pm me..preferably today or tomorrow if at all possible..I'll tell you the details of her when you pm me..I do need someone to pm me as soon as possible, as I'm going away for a week by tomorrow.. Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated
  16. Okay thanks. That answers all my questions..
  17. Okay I get all of that...one thing I still don't know..is how to get a green yellowface in the first place? None of the pairings you listed tells how to breed a green yf..
  18. Ohh I think I get it now..so to get a yf green, one of the parents has to be a yf, of course..but whether you have 1 blue and 1 green or both greens doesn't matter? I'd think having both parents be yf, and both greens, would make a lot higher percentage of the babies being yf greens? Because if there was one green and one blue, all of the babies would be split for blue and therefore not yf? But how on earth will you know if a green is also yellowface, if they are split blue then they aren't yf..how would you breed them to find out??
  19. If getting a df yf green won't work, (which it probably won't seeing as no one has bred a white faced green yet) then why? I'm just wondering as how this mutation (yellowface) works, and why a df yf wouldn't be a white face in a green? Edit: sorry I didnt see the above post So if a budgie can't be yf and split for blue at the same time..what would you get if you bred a yf blue to a yf green? Would you get some yf greens (that aren't split for blue) and some greens that are split for blue? I'm kinda confused now how you would get a yf green...
  20. Yeah that was pretty much what I thought..about how it shows up on them..I didn't even think that they might have to be split for blue for them to carry the yf..I suppose whether that's true or not would have to do with what gene they carried the yf on or whatever..I don't know much of genetics lol. I hope that made sense.
  21. Okay then, so yf greens are possible..you just can't tell unless you breed them..so if it's a double factor yf, then it's still got a yellow face? (on a green bird, not a blue)
  22. Can a green be a yf2? I've heard that yes they can, but of course because they already have a yellow face, you can't tell until you breed them..If they can be yf, then what about double factor yf? Doesn't that make (in blues) their face white, though if you breed them you get yf's? What would that do to greens? Thanks.
  23. Yes I know, that is what makes it so confusing lol..so really Harlequin Pied is Recessive Pied, but about 50% of the people say a yellowface2 or goldenface blue Recessive Pied is a Harlequin Pied..Okay.
  24. So is that bird a yf2 Recessive Pied or something..? If so, then why would they call a yf2 Rec. Pied a Harlequin Pied?
