  1. Why do you say not "heavily marked"? Maybe I do not understand that term as I thought it to be... can you explain? Also, so the one "blue" feather below her vent is not necessarily an indication she is split for blue??? The only way to tell would be to breed her (when she is of age to do so) with a blue as Norm suggested...???
  2. http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN3700.jpg Maybe this picture will help, this is her on the right... she is heavily pied... as for pairing her with a blue she is still too young to breed (waiting until January), but she is already bonded to a Green Opaline cock... so I guess I won't be able to tell unless I split them up and find a blue mate when she is ready. ***************please do not post oversized photos as we are having to change them all to links
  3. Darn, that's what I thought. I will try to get a better picture of the full front of his/her face and maybe you can take a better guess??? I'll try to post it soon.
  4. Were up to 5 eggs so far, here's mama and her clutch..... http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4213.jpg

okay, Elly. Thanks for letting me know. Also, please know that I am not purposely ignoring the resize request for this site. I am getting an error message on my photobucket account that won't let me edit, resize or anything to modify the pics. It gives me that error and then tells me the window needs to close and it kicks me off the site. So I'm sorry, I'm not ignoring the resize request.
  7. This is "SAM". He is only 4 months old or so but when I bought him and his nose was rather blue... in the last few days his cere has faded a bit but still has a blue tint to it. The thing is all my blue hens have "white" ceres with blue tint around the nostrils... and I fear my so called boy just night be a girl??? Please check out this picture of him (its the best I have so far) and tell me if you think this youngster is a girl or boy. Thanks http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4244.jpg PS Sorry about photo size, I'm having trouble with my edit options with photobucket, I am getting an error and booted off. Please don't think I don't care about the request to resize pics, I just can't do it for some reason. Moderator’s Message turned to link. Picture too large, do not post the image code only the link if you are unable to resize
  8. This is one of my hens. From what I'm told she is a green dominate pied clear wing, but I not sure if she might be split for blue.... I was looking in the aviary the other day and noticed what seems to be a "blue" feather below her vent at the base of the underside of her tail..... check out this picture and tell me if this is actually a blue feather and if so does that mean she is split for blue???? THanks so much http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4164.jpg PS I'm sorry for the photo size, I have been trying to edit the size in my photobucket, but I am getting an error message and booted out of photobucket if I try to do any type of editing to my photos????? So I am sorry, I'm not being lazy or careless.... just can't get it to work!!! Moderator’s Message reduced because too large, if you can not resize please just leave the link thank you

http://images04.imikimi.com/image/images_full/104405904.jpg Hope this works, but this is my entire flock now.... :budgiedance: Just wanted to share.
  10. Can anyone respond on this part of my question??? How did she "relay" so soon...? I think I agree with KAZ on this... because I went against the suggestions of cage breeding and allowed colony breeding I took a chance for the hens to "fight" for nesting boxes of their choice... although I have 6 nesting boxes to choice from in the aviary, this one box seems to be the choice of all my hens when "exploring" the boxes. Until the hen that ate the egg lays one of her own I won't know if she will eat them.
  11. I have already put the breading pair in their own cage and the hen has already laid a new egg. So they are safe now. My husband cleaned out the eaten egg and cleaned the nest box. The thing is that the hen that eat the egg is not even paired with a male (she has no bonded mate), but I guess that doesn't matter if she wants that box??? I don't think I will continue with the colony breeding. I have had to seperate too many out at this point anyway. I already have the two breeding pairs taken out (so that's 4) and 3 of my other birds are too young to breed and have been seperated out so that 7 of my 10.... colony breeding is just not working for me as I hoped it would. If Any of my remaining keets bond and pair off I will seperate them also so I'll just have to see how it goes from here I guess.
  12. one of my hens laid an egg in the nest box and has been in and out of it with her mate for since.... this morning my husband saw one of the other hens coming out of the nesting box and he looked in the box and the hen ATE MY OTHER HEN'S EGG!!! I have decided to remove the mating pair from the rest and they are now safe from further harm, but I have two questions... one, will this hen be a problem when it comes to laying her own eggs, will she eat them too or was this a territory thing??? the other question is, I checked on the hen and her mate that had their egg eaten today and she has laid another egg already???? :hap: she just laid the one that got eaten yesterday, how is it she laid another so soon , they usually lay one every other day??? some info would be appreciated. Thanks
  13. Thank you for the reply on this, it was very helpful. I have a new concern. When examining the eggs this morning I noticed that one of my eggs has a "pressure crack" in it. It looks like a small indentation crack as if one of the other eggs was rolled into it or something???? If this egg is fertile will this egg have any chance of hatching or should I just remove it now????????????/ :hap: If you check it with a torch you will see if the crack goes through. If so throw it away. When a crack is new you can repair an egg with glue and spare eggshell but you stand a risk that the egg then becomes too tough for a chick to hatch out of later on. Other methods to repair an egg is liquid paper. But if you see the crack going all the way through tomorrow it is too late and you must throw the egg away. The thing is cracked eggs in a nest break open and then the hen gets the egg stuck to her. It can stick to other good eggs and you have all kinds if issues. when you say cracked all the way through, do you mean to the membrain??? and if so how can I tell if it's all the way through??? When checking the eggs this morning with the flashlight, all seem to have a red mass in it but I couldn't see veins... may need to be in a darker room or wait until tomorrow night. I'll check the crack, if it is not all the way through can I just leave it alone or should it be patched no matter what ? I watch the video clips posted on one of the other posts about candling eggs and I couldn't tell if they were fertile or not. If I see a "spot" does that mean they are fertile even if I don't see the viens?????

  15. Neat when will they start hatching? (18 days from the first egg since she started setting right away?) Also, I thought keets don't like nesting material? What does the material do for the babies?
  16. okay, I compromised... I took off the vine across the center, but left the vine around the outter edge. I also took the peg board off the top and replaced it with plexi for light and added my last two nesting boxes. I also angled the aviary in the corner with the lights over top of it... check it out now and tell me what you think? Keep in mind this is in my living room so I'm trying to keep the appeal suitable for indoor living yet let the birds feel "at home" too. http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/DSCN4129.jpg
  17. I hear you there. It gets costly. I went from one parakeet as a gift to 10 keets. I went from one 18" cage to a 6' aviary. By the time you add up the cost of the birds, the food, the dishes, nesting boxes, toys, etc.... a $20 bird turned in to hundreds of dollars. But I'm pasionate about them. I enjoy learning their life process, etc...
  18. The question Denise asked about them being too far apart??? What was the answer to that. What happens when the foster mom's chick's start to hatch and this "foster chick" is so much bigger and powerful then the new babies? Won't this foster chick end up killing the new babies?
  19. I was about to give up and just not attempt breading, but once I stopped messing with things and just let them be, next thing you know I go an egg... and now three... this site has taught me one valuable thing... be patient.
  20. okay, I have 3 eggs now ( ), but I have a question. I know that it takes about 18 days for the eggs to hatch and most people say start counting those days after the second or third egg she has laid and starts sitting on them, but..... my hen has sat on her eggs from day one. She does not come out of her nest at all since she laid the first egg except to breed with her mate. So my question is should I expect these eggs to start hatching about 18 days from the first eggs or still go off the second or third egg's date???? Let me know thanks. http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/RSCN4124.jpg Chrissy, your photo has been turned into a link again. Please resize your photos before posting them. They MUST be 640x460 or under. You can set Photobucket to download your images this size, or resize them later. If you need further help, please ask.
  21. Well Liv and Neat thanks for making me take a second look at it. My husband and I were just looking at side by side photos and I have to agree I like the metal better too. The leaves not only look "busy" but it makes the aviary appear smaller and not as clean lines as the metal frame does. I think I'm going to just do the wood facial frame instead, keep it simple and clean. Thanks for the opions, I'm gonna remove the vine today.
  22. Is there any change I'll get greywings or yellow faces from them? Or will they all be normal or pied greens?
  23. Yes, YF2 I'm told. As for the hen, I don't think there is any blue around her vent. It is mainly green like her belly with downy white feathers around the very opening... I think. She's now nesting on her NEW EGG :budgiedance: so I can't really disturb her to check. If I find out otherwise or have a better picture I'll let you know and then maybe you can tell better. I'd love to get some blue from them if the green is dom and that's what we get, i'm sure they will stil be nice looking birds.
  24. I'm sorry I've heard of people say English budgie, Austrialian budgie, etc... I thought there might be a difference and maybe she was different then my others... ?? She looks nothing like any of my other keets. I must have sounded really stupid huh. :budgiedance:
  25. I'm told he's a greywing sky blue split to recessive pied and she is a recessive pied... I hope that's a good combo? I can't wait to see the babies... keep your fingers crossed for me this is my first clutch on my own.
