  1. Hi Elly,How long until the fumes from the cooking are safe to bring him back into the kitchen? I know friends who have their bird in the same room as the kitchen. Is this really harmful or just a myth? Thanks for all the compliments on Pokey. I do love him! Thanks Sailorwolf - my budgie dealer said he was 90% sure he was a boy. Thanks for the advice.
  2. Hi all, thanks for the advice. I can't seem to work out how to post a picture sorry, do I have to have the picture on a website?
  3. Hi all, Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Liv suggested to hold him - but he's not even at that stage yet - unless I grab him??. He is only about a meter away from where I sit to watch tv and from where I am in the kitchen when I cook. The only time I'm not in the same room as him is when I'm sleeping, working, or on the computer (which isn't much). I might however, try moving his cage closer ie. on the table near me in the lounge. As far as fruit and veges go - he won't eat anything other than his seeds! I've tried carrot and banana and strawberry but he won't go near them. I don't have a mirror in his cage as I've read this will stop him bonding. So, do you all think that if I just continue to sit by him and talk to him that he'll come around? How long will it take? I'm getting concerned because I know the older they are the harder they are to train! Also, he seems to be bitting me now whereas he never used to. Elly, what about the whole idea of putting my hand in his cage all the time to get him use me? Also, I haven't been able to even clean his cage (other than the pull out drawer) because he won't come out. I will try the radio thing as well - thanks throwback. I will try to post a picture of him - and maybe find out if he is a "he".
  4. Hi, I have had my budgie for 5 weeks now. I bought him from a breeder when he was 6-8 weeks old. We had his wings clipped also. I have read lots of material on how to train/tame a budgie but Pokey just doesn't seem to be bonding with me. Ideally I'd just like to teach him to talk but have read they need to bond first. Because I work all day - time is not something i have that much of. I talk with him in the morning and at night - he is in the main living area of the house. He will eat millet off my hand if he is hungry (ie. if he has had no seed top up for a while) and will even come out of the cage on my finger if he's hungry enough. If he has seed he wants nothing to do with me at all. He moves away or sits frozen. I love him heaps but am getting frustrated at his lack of response. He seems happy enough - chirps and does tricks but is scared of us. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
