  1. Thanks shannon. Hows the breeding going?
  2. Even if she only lost her flights?
  3. My quails got e.coli a few years ago. Their water would have been contaminated by budgie droppings most likely. I came home one day and all quails were dead in the seed dish. Apparently it causes a bird to starve to death, it cannot eat even if its hungry. Here is an article about it. Says that if hens get it they may become infertile and chicks can get it when being fed by parents. Quote from Barrie Shutt Budgerigars. "Basically a bird with an E.coli. infection will look fluffed, become lethargic, stop eating, loose weight and may have diarrheoa." "If you want to promote good health in birds you need: · good hygiene · good nutrition · good water supply · good aviary management · good quarantine · ventilation." http://www.officialbarrieshuttbudgerigars.com/ecoli.htm Excellent article, I hope they get better.
  4. I have a young baby, 35 days old. She cannot fly. Her flights are extremely short compared to most babies. And her 2 long flights are completely gone. As far as I can see she hasn't got french moult (no other feather loss isues) Will the flights grow back? Her flights were their as a young bird but the next day they werent, so either they were plucked off or she got them caught on somthing. Any ideas?
  5. Yf blue series lacewing x yf2 cobalt rec pied. Youd get no lacewing chicks. Baby cocks would be split lacewing. You would get all blue series birds (cannot tell what until I know the df of lacewing) 50% chicks would be yellowface. All the chicks would be split recessive pied. Lacewing is sex linked. And seen as though your lacewing is a hen, sadly you would get no visual lacewings.
  6. I think its a lacewing. I will wait for pictures to confirm but I've never seen an albino with grey head markings. Maybe a little suffusion but no head markings. Any hint of brown on the bird? Fallows have red eyes and do get suffusion so its possible.I've nevr seen a yellowface fallow though, so im sticking with lacewing.
  7. Is salt good for budgies? If salt is good for budgies then I see no problem with it. Has plenty of other good things in it, just not sure about salt.
  8. He looks better than ever

Yeah I thought green was best thanks all.

Are both bottom two the same? Just the red one is at an earlier stage? Im not to sure. Should it be feeded to the birds the way it is or should I let it go brown. Thankyou.
  11. Yellowface blue dominant pied spangle is my all time favourite mutation.
  12. First one probably around 3-5 months of age. Looks like a yf blue Dominant pied. Did you cut his wings yourself? Second one looks like a little skyblue hen to me. I know neville posted on another thread that he is cock but I cannot see it. I think its a hen. 8-12 weeks of age. Feel free to correct me. Clean the vent, leftover droppings on the vent get clogged up worse and worse as the days go on because it all sticks to eachother. Could be from stress.

Hi I've been growing seeds and I need these identified please. Thankyou.
  14. I find that if you remove any water for 6 hours previous the birds will take to the medicated water better. they will want a drink and will drink the medication. If their are other sources of water, they will take the tasty water over the medicated water anyday.
  15. Kaz is their any preventative medication you can give the bird to prevent mites? Like a tablet that makes the birds feathers stink so mites dont go near them?
  16. A few years ago, Dad would always say a $10 budgie was not worth the $50 vet bill. I was paying for the vet and all (I had a job back then) but I was most likely under age at that stage. So I needed a parent to go with me, it was a real struggle. Trying to explain anything to them is a real struggle, their mind is set.
  17. I've used it before and it was okay.
  18. This is my opinion. 1) Was it right to remove him? Yes, for the moment anyway. Was he actually hurting the chicks? Plucking or anything? 2) Should i leave him where he is, or consider putting him back once the hen is sitting on 2-3 eggs? Too be honest this is up to you. I would consider doing it to make sure all eggs are fertile. Males share a big part in egg raising. They need to be their to feed the hens and babies. 3) IF i leave him with the chicks, how might that affect fertility? The sperm from the cock in the hen only lasts 7 days I think, and I also think it may only fertile one egg. So I beleive each egg needs 1 mating act, so most of the eggs will be infertile because they havent mated since being split up. Feel free to correct me on this. 4) Does anyone have experience with cocks like this? What would you advise? I had a male bird that used to think he was female. He would incubate the eggs all day and would not let the hen in the nest box at all. I removed him for a few days and when placing him back he was not possessive anymore. He incubated but didnt mess around with the nest and left the majority to the hen. It's only the first egg so perhaps he could have been "trying" to get the nest in order, like hens do. They will often chew the nesting box to pieces and kick all shavings out, maybe he was trying to do that. Give it a few days and see how it goes, add him back in their when the nest is ready and he may see that and say "The nest is fine now, the hen got it ready for me, I do not need to throw everything out now" Remember this is just my opinion, someone may have a better idea I dont know. Good luck anyway Dean.
  19. Yeah shannon both babies will be split rec pied. A normal/rec pairing x rec pairing = 50% rec and 50% normal/rec. You would not get any normal babies that are not split ,
  20. Daz I beleive a normal/recessive paired to recessive gets 50% recessives and 50% normals/recessives. So their would be no normals that are not split?
  21. When I have moulting birds I give them moulting aid. Aswell as calcivet and plenty of protein. They also get the egg and biscuit and soft food daily. And plenty of other things to help support them through the moult.
  22. okay Excellent thanks very much. With the square take away dishes do you find you have to blow the husks off the top every day?
  23. I've never had a tame bird before but I know some birds when moulting get a change of personality. They bite more and want nothing to do with their owner. when the moult is over the go back to the same old happy budgie.
  24. Is he moulting?
  25. I agree. Just need to make sure. you keep an eye on them while they are in quarantine and help them through the moult. Heath, do you use moulting aid? Pearce I started using moulting aid about 10 -12 months ago, seems to be good. I like breeders aid also. After reading some of Daz's posts re. nutrition today, i'm going sit down with all the additive i have and really work out whats necessary and what i'm doubling up on. okay thanks very much.
