Moulting Symptoms?
It is not quite panting, it is more breathing with his beak open....Would parasites cause this? Also just had a look at some feather under a magnifying glass and I can't see any parasites. Thanks everyone.I will call the vet and let you know.He is not breathing with beak open all the time. Mainly after flight. And occasionaly in the cage. He is very alert however he does not look as if as though he is moulting by his look, only the feathers at the bottom of the cage tell that story.

Moulting Symptoms?
Dear friends, We have a lovely budgie called Roman, age nearly 3. He is a great talker and very intelligent. Over the last days we have noticed that Roman is losing many feathers, many of them seem to be significant ones. In the meanwhile he seems agitated and twitchy. He preens all the time and his flying is not the best. When he flies he seems to be exhausted and he pants with his beak open. Are these symptoms all relating to moulting? On the positive side, he is still chirpy, he is talking more than normal and he eats and drinks. We would appreciate some feedback. Many thanks Terry and Robert

Bent Feathers
Spartacus might pick some things up off Roman, or may decide to take the back seat. I used to have an inside budgie and he had a massive list of vocab also... along with the general ones, he was also into cricket and footy and he was also a quick learner. They're great fun aren't they? :(Laughing out loud): Yes, I agree. I would like the little one to talk as well, but he does not seem to be interested in us at all. He is easy to handle but not as attentive as Roman. Thanks for the warm welcome and great advice!

Thanks Maesie, it is a relief, because Roman is an amazing bird. He has a long list of vocabulary and is an ethusiastic learner. He quotes lines from TV's Little Britain: 'Call me Bubbles, everyone does!" and 'Computer says no!' Spartacus is shy and quiet but this is not suprising living with fierce Roman! T.

Bent Feathers
:fear well....goodness knows then But it doesnt look like anything to worry about just the same. Bea had one of her budgies with a similar situation and it turned out to be one budgie biting and pulling on the others tail. So could be anything like that....But I seriously doubt it is a feather health issue. Aha! I think that you might have it! Spartacus is new to the family and I have seen Roman (the older one) pull on his tail. I think that there is a high chance that this is the answer. Thanks, I would have never thought of it! Looking at their plumage there is nothing else to suggest French moult, their feathers are lovely, clean and shinny. No problem other than both having bent tips on one of their tail feathers each. If it was French moult surely there would be more than one feather bent? Right? Many thanks, Terry.

Bent Feathers
Hi Kaz, I would have thought the same but both birds have exactly the same condition (coincidence?), so I guess this is where I was worried. Many thanks for your help! Terry. It's entirely possible that when they were caught for sale they were put in a small carry cage and the door shut on their tails :fear Hi Kaz, Roman was bought 8 months ago, while Spartacus was bought about a month ago. They both live in a spacious cage and did not have the condition upon purchase. T.

Hi Kaz, thanks for your reply. How do I attached an image here? I use the attach image function and it asks for url? Do I need to upload the image to a websire first? If so, I do not have a website so if you provide me with an e-mail I will be able to send them to you directly. Please advise. Terry. Terry.- Bent Feathers
Hi all, we have two male budgies: Roman a very clever talker (18 months) and Spartacus (3 months). I have noticed that both have bent feathers right at the tip of the main tail feathers. I am worried about French moult, but reading throught the net they do not seem to display any of the 'tell tell' signs other than this specific 'bent' feather. For both only one of the two tail feathers is affected. Any ideas anyone? By the way, this is a wonderful site, well done all! Best regards, Terry and Robert. - Bent Feathers
