Shakey...in Name And Demeanor
Oh no, poor little thing . I'm no expert, but it could have been the result of a knock to the head when young. It might be nerological (not sure of spelling), and she may not be able to stop herself doing it? If she was mine, i'd take her to the avian vet, just to do some tests to make sure there was no underlying illness (even though she's not showing any other signs). I know that would ease my mind. That way you and your adopted mum would know for sure whats up. Just my thoughts... Good luck and let us know how she gets on... Thanks Maesie. I had thought maybe it might have been some 'brain' thing - saves me spelling the neuro word. 'Mum' thought it may be Parkinsons but not sure if birds get that or not. I would have said the DT's if it had been a drinker! I think 'cos it's been going on for so long now and Shakey seems to be in all areas normal, that Mum is not overtly worried - thinking maybe it might be just a 'nervous' condition, given the way the parents were toward it. We may need a bird psychologist! Off topic for a mo...I've sent you a PM. Hope you don't mind. Thanks again

Shakey...in Name And Demeanor
Hello all. My 'adopted' Mum has a female about 6months of age who since the day it was born, continually shakes, hence its name. It seems to be an otherwise healthy little one, eating, drinking and moving around the cage like any other bird and seems overall quite happy. The parents were apparently not very good parents to it nor its siblings, throwing them out when very young. Can anyone shed some light on this behaviour and maybe know of a cure? None of the other budgies are like this at all. Thanks for any help in this matter. Julie

That's what we women do! Millie looks a lovely little thing so no wonder you couldn't leave her there, and her tail looks far more interesting than a prawn's tail.

Nothing more to add than what KAZ has said! :hap: Thank you Phoebe, Birdluv,Elly and all. I have put Buttercup in the Bird of the Month Elly. Well, I think I did it properly - hope so. We think she is lovely so who knows. *shrugs* :hap:

Feburary Budgie Of The Month
This is Buttercup, who we think is gorgeous and is really sweet by nature. Not sure of her exact age but she is fairly young. A very pale yellow just like newly churned butter with black eyes so not quite sure what 'type' she is but hope she's okay for our first attempt at the Competition.

Thanks. I will make sure to tell them all and just hope that it won't go to their heads! Posting the pics went well as I ignored the minute bit of testosterone in me and followed the great directions on doing it. Joking...really! I am!

The Existing Aviary And Our New Year's Project
Liv: I'm an Adaliaidian too I think we are few and far between on here (Laughing out loud). Just up the road from us here in Elizabeth Downs - almost neighbours! The Apricot gives them side on shade as well as the neighbours huge trees on left and right. We also have a huge tablecloth that we roll up and down dependent on the heat. We have water going over it on really hot days and go in and mist them as needed as well as their ducking into baths. Been contemplating in making a shade cloth awning that can come down from the top of the front of the cage, which is west facing, and have it able to be tethred on an angle to the ground, thus letting airf low around it still. Not had any problems with how it is to date so God must be looking after us all. It's going to be enough noise over that new side of the yard for our guests who sleep in the room just near the garden shed. Our neighbour has canaries and finches alongside our fence so we want the guests to be able to get some sleep. Otherwise a good idea.

The Existing Aviary And Our New Year's Project
Hiya KAZ. The existing aviary is in the far left corner of the yard and the new project is in the far right corner...a million miles apart. We have it not too close to the backside fence corner as there is an orange tree on its left as well as an apricot tree and we have just last week planted Calistemons in the back left corner and back right side of the aviary. This is the distance between the 2 areas... We'll have to look into your suggestion a bit but I think it's gonna be a bit more $$$ than we have at this stage to link the 2 of them since they're so far apart. But one never says "never". Julie

Help Needed In Typing - Of Birds, Not Qerty. ;)
Hi guys. Robert and I have never really 'gone into' what type of Budgies we had before, so coming on here has opened up a whole new world to us. Basically, all green ones have forever been called a 'Georgie' as that was all my late Nanna ever had - even if I had a blue one, it was still 'Georgie' to her! Here are pics and names, and if you can possibly tell us then we can look :book: into the posts dealing with 'types' and say "Aah Ha!!! ...That's why it's called that!" Then one day, maybe get the hang of the breeding tables. First things first though! Thanks for all the help so far and for being such a great community of friendly and knowledgeable people...and all for FREE! Here are 'some' of our Family... Angel Buttercup Custard Mildred - not the greatest of shots and lastly for now, Olive

The Existing Aviary And Our New Year's Project
This is our current aviary, complete with a lovely surround of very dry and very reactive Adelaide plains Biscay clay soil. I am going out this afternoon to buy a LARGE amount of gypsum to fill in the cracks before we end up with tourists mixing us up with the Grand Canyon tour. This one came for $70 about years ago and we have it resting on a floor of pavers. We are going to get to and make an 'external' safety entrance [ after all these years without one!] now that I have read here of a cheap way to do it! Here is the un-used garden shed we are planning on converting this year into a secong aviary, mainly for the influx of Cockatiels we are expecting [7 new + our 'Chook']. Good thing is that the floor is totally concreted. It WILL be getting a coat of paint to the outside as well. Hmmm...may just get Robert to paint the other one to match!

Success So Here Are Some Of The Others.
Thanks Deb on Custard's behalf. I think that it should be called 'Passionfruit Custard' cos of the black bits looking like passionfruit seeds. Here is a group shot I forgot to put in at the beginning... Olive with George and Von on the end - Now I shall have to find out what kind each one is. Adorable yes, but what type? Julie

?s Re Aviary Wire
Wow! My first actual question on the Forum. Not putting anyone under pressure here...not marking you or anything, okay. Hubby and I have a huge garden shed with a cemented floor and gable roof that we do not use so am looking at turning it into an aviary. The question is regarding birdwire. We found rolls of it at Bunnings and [1] not sure which size [ please say the least expensive of them all] and [2] on each roll, it says that we have to firstly file off pieces and then soak it in vinegar or brush vinegar on it and then [3] other stuff I forget at the moment. Is this what you have to do? I understand the need to file off any real sharp bits to keep them from cutting themselves etc but what of the othe things? Any suggestions on [1] what type/Brand/size of bird wire and [2] the process will be read gratefully. Thanks in advance Julie and Robert

Just A Tweet... Hello
Hello. Hubby Robert and I are new to the forum and so just saying "Hi". We have an aviary 8x5x6 with 8 Budgies, 3male/5 female and varying in colour from blues to green to yellow and white . Also one very outnumbered yellow cockatiel. More budgies are coming either this weekend or the next, dependant on how the weather goes as too hot, they'll wait for a bit. Lotsa questions will come but for now, Ihave to shoot off and get tea ready so will be back later to 'pick' the brains of those in the know! Cheers
