  2. Hi thereYeah,we get hot days here as well (Perth WA).You could put a water mister in your aviary as i do,being careful not to wet the seed and perching areas, also a fan outside moving the water would be a good idea.As for the babies dont breed this time of year it's too stressful for the babies and the parents and for us owners as well, take the boxes out and they wont lay any eggs.
  3. Hi Guy's You'd be better off with a smaller dish, something a bit flatter.Sometimes what looks like seed is actually husks on top of the food, and check it often. Also you dont really want poo in the food either, this can cause other problems. So use a smaller ,flatter bowl, the bigger the bowl the more likely they are to sit in it instead of on the floor next to it.Hope this was helpful.
  4. Hi there If you can find a bird vet in your area and you can afford one,go there. There are so many bird diseases wilth pretty much the same symptoms, when a bird gets to the puffy stage,it's not good. You could take a chance and go to the pet shop and get some sulphadim..and try that as a last resort.Hope that was helpful
  5. Hi there I was wondering how long ago you wormed your birds?.are you feeding greens like lettuce as they can cause runny poo(if you are..stop)If it was me,as a precaution,i would go to my local bird dealer/pet shop and buy a bottle of sulphadim or coccivet and give it to both your birds for 7 days.Birds are funny little creatures, they dont present with symptoms untill on deaths door, because in the wild if they showed early signs of sickness they would ultimately be fair game for other birds.Your alternative is to take a poo sample to a bird vet and get them to test it for you, checking for disease etc;mind you this is not a cheap undertaking,it probably be in the region of $50/$70 or more, but try to find a true bird vet.. Hope this helps ... cheers
  6. Hi Mistyl Sorry to hear your bird died, budgies don't die from scaly face either. The only was to determin how he died is to have an autopsy by a proper bird vet, there are at least half a dozen serious diseases with the same symptoms.Your bird dealer sounds quite hopless, birds can suffer from the polyoma virus which will attack feathers and beaks.Feed your bird on a good quality birdseed thats been fortified with vitimins(go to a pet shop)and remember birds don't do well on seed alone, also include grass, beets, apples, and wild seeds are great alot of birds die from malnutrition. Hope this helps, there are some great internet sites about budgies.here's one http://www.budgieworld.net/budgie_advice.htm
  7. Hi there You've probably already treated her for mites. She could be bored if she's in a cage all day,you could try giving her something to play with like some tree branches grass etc,try to get branches with bark on them and she will pull off the bark.If she is in a cage most of the time, try letting her fly around in a safe room and observe her to she what she does. Some birds pluck themselves or their babies out of sheer boredom.. Good luck
  8. Hi to all in cyberland.I was wondering if anyone out there has used Sulpha Quin for cocci,I know that it is a poultry medication but does anyone know the dosage for budgies. The Cocci treatments avail for budgies is so rediculously priced i thought this may be a cheaper alternative to have on hand and also for the accessory table at the club meetings. So if you have used it and are 100% sure of the dosage i would be very grateful Cheers.. 9. What a dilemma One we've all faced i'm sure.Firstly you need to know what you are treating your birds for,and the only way to do that is to find a bird vet and take him one of the dead birds for autopsy or maybe a poo sample, otherwise you will never know, and there are so many diseases with the same symptoms it's not funny.Don't introduce anymore birds while yours are sick and remember when your birds do get better to always quarantine them for a month or so first.Hope this helps
  10. Be very careful what you put on your budgies.Your vet should be able to supply you with cydectin or ivermectin(same thing) and you apply one drop to the back of the neck every few months.I think drops are better as there is no chance of inhalation, and you want to be sure it's mites and the mother is'nt a feather plucker, you can take a feather into the vet and get him/her to look at it under the microscope.I have had feather pluckers and mostly it's due to boredom, spending lots of time in the nest box.You can try hanging a small short piece of chain in the nest box for her to play with, make sure it's not too fine and she or the babies can't strangle themselves
  11. This might be of interest to those who wan't to learn more about diseases.Last year i lost a dozen birds with megabacteria/avian gastric yeast,so i bought myself a cheap microscope from **** smiths and tried to learn and identify the most common bird diseases, the link i'm gonna post will show you how to identify bacteria under a microscope. http://www.finchaviary.com/Maintenance/FecalSmear.htm
