Yes, thats what it is. I was talking to Peter G the other night and he explained that it is long flightedness. The secondary flights are long enough that they bend upwards when the bird is resting. it looks rather funny and i am still yet to get a photo of one.
  3. They are beautiful parrots Your budgies feel left out though... look at the yellow one desperate to get in the shot
  4. violet is a modifier, like grey. it doesn't reduce the size, just changes the colour. Its the dark factors that reduce the size, so if you put a cobalt violet to a dark green, then you will get smaller birds. not because of the violet, but because of the 2 dark factors.

Good luck with your cage search. I cant really advise which one is best as you need to decide what suits your needs and budget the best. most of the cages ( not aviaries) i have are similar to this one

looks great!! perches are always best running accross the narrowest width to allow some flight.
  7. It could be splayed legs or rickets. How old is the chick and can you post photos please?
  8. I agree it is pronounced seer

the main issue with seeing the vet is being grabbed - budgies hate it. When i tame birds i always include being grabbed as part of the taming process. It's a good idea to get them to unconditionally trust your hand so if you ever have to remove a blood feather, clip a toe nail or check them over etc, they wont freak out. My tame budgie gets grabbed every day. He has gotten so used to it i can grab him from the perch in his cage with ease. It doesn't hurt them and it gets them to trust you at a far deeper level as they overcome that fear of being prey.
  10. Yes! I seee hen too :cake: I held a young 6 day old hen up to a very seasoned breeder today and said - "do you think this is a hen?" - he just looked at me blankly Some people dont even think that sexing them this young is possible. As each chick has hatched, i have written down the sex (on day of hatching) so see how i go... so far so good. :cake:
  11. What a merical that little bub has been. It's amazing how they can keep going even when stone cold. He looks lovely and healthy - well done
  12. Yes, a Cock bird - and a cutie at that
  13. looks like a cock to me, but a photo without flash in natural light will tell for sure

beautiful babies :hooray: I look forward to seeing them grow up :hooray:
  17. They are adorable :hooray: I believe, however, it is not the best to breed two crested birds together. It is best to put a crested with a crest bred (a bird from a crested parent but not showing a crest) This is because the crested gene can be fatal to chicks. Genetically, crested birds are also very small. I like Mo (as in Mohawk) for the male and Fluffy Mug for the hen hehe :hooray:

Yes it is possible to get calcium poisoning. Like with everything, too much is unhealthy. I like to give my birds access to calcium though a calcium block and some cuttle bone. Other than that, they shouldnt need any more. Hens while breeding need a little more sometimes. Each bird is different, some need more and some need less. its about knowing your birds and working out how much to give and how often. If i see a bird really getting stuck into a calcuim block, then i know they need more so may give them a boost in the water etc.

Is your goal to get lots of albinos, lutinos and double factor spangles??? These pairs will result in mostly all yellow or all white chicks.... is that what you are after? The final YF pair will have some double factor yellow faced babies (having white faces) which is fine... it all just depends on what you want.
  20. I dont know how i missed this tread So exciting!! I look forward to watching your progress
  21. I'd say a grey green cinnamon Spangle hen. (i dont know how to tell olive in spangles) Sky Spangle, I dont think he's opaline as the blue though the wings looks to be a fault (i forget what its called - i have some in my flock too) TCB opaline (dont know what collour - grey green perhaps?? ) Grey green cinnamon spangle

Nice birds. Love the spangle hen
  23. I can understand that. however, Speaking for myself, and possibly others here. Many of us are new to the breeding and "sending birds to god" is something that is easier said than done. Our flocks are small, our hearts are young and we see the individuality in each bird. Hence we get saddened when they get sick and want to make them better. I know many seasoned breeders like yourself Macka, who are far more casual about life and death. These things come with time, experience that lots of us are yet to have.
  24. She didnt make it either. the little red eye passed away today. her crop failed to empty and she aspirated on her food
