Some Questions
Any ideas? these are the symptoms of sickness. a bird that is fluffed up and shivvering is feverish and needs a warm lamp on them (25 -40 watts) and needs to go to the vet for diagnosis. The opening and closing of the beak with no sound is mouth breathing which is also a possibly sign of respiratory issues (it can be also from stress or excersise, but only lasts a few minuites)

My Boy Ash
He does have a purple ring, I'm not sure what it says though as he won't stay still enough for me to check. Do budgies really eat checken?? Isn't that a bit canibalistic??? No, budgies eating chicken is the same as us eating pig. Budgies and chickens are birds Humans and pigs are mammals.

Bad Day In My Aviary, Budgies Vs Greencheeks :(
I am so sorry for all your loss it doesn't surprise me that these birds can chew though some thinner guage wire. their bite is nasty!! my niece has one and butter wouldn't melt in its mouth... I would let your budgies moult and have a rest without breeding over winter, then you can start them up again in spring

My Boy Ash
He is gorgeous. Looks like a cinnamon grey green to me He has a breeders ring on... is it purple?? can you read the code on it?? ps. budgies love to eat chicken so he might be hinting

Pearce's Budgerigar Blog
Protien and amino acids and calcium are the three main things for feathers i belive My breeders get 4 dished of food at all times. 1) Fisher mix - white millet, canary seed and Jap millet. 2) pure sunflower seed. 3) pure Canary seed 4) budgie starter with egg and biscuit mix. They also get veggies and soaked seed, iodine blocks and cuttle bone etc as well... I don't know if i have FM yet (my babies are not old enough) but i can tell you it scares the life out of me. I will be devastated too if it hits A breeder i was talking to said to always keep a few runners on the floor of your aviary as it helps the others get immune to the virus (until a different strain comes in on a new bird). He also told me that if FM hits, to shut down all breeding for 6 months minimum and let all the birds be in the aviary with lots of quality sunlight. I love your spangle! What a reward out of all of your hard work

Cold Winter Nights
Concrete with about an inch of lime, then covered with another inch (or more) of clean sand is ideal. Some place wire racks under the perches so the birds dont have access to the bulk of the droppings too.

No Top Beak
I agree with Kaz. The poor girl. how does she eat without her top beak... Photos??

Cold Winter Nights
Cold can knock out the sick or weak... keep a close eye on your flock as you may have a disease hiding, Or the two deaths could have been a coincidence and both died from weaknesses caused by individual conditions. Budgies, provided they are acclimatised to being outside, should seldom be affected by the weather. As Kaz says its dampness that is the danger. It doesn't have to be wet, just damp. Any kind of moisture getting to the floor of your aviary will cause bacteria, mould and parasites to thrive and potentially knock out your flock.
