My Pairs
the picture you posted of the parents http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc160/b...rl/P9240041.jpg of the opaline bub looks like the female is an opaline... a non-opaline lacewing should have markings on cheeks, back of head, neck, wings and tail of cinnamon brown color. And yours has the opaline no marking look on her back if that's the case than your opaline chick would be male since visual sexlinked hen will pass the trait visually only to a male. feel free to correct me but that's according to http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=13868 & http://www.bestofbreeds.net/al-nasser/article10.htm

Any Help With Sorting Of Budgies Would Be Much Appreciated.
A good test for myself.. here is what I thought: Pepper - cock, Yellowface type 2, dark green (the top of his chest looks more olive than the rest so yf 2) Betty - hen, Cinnamon opaline Violet Jack - cock, violety sky blue - (at first glace I thought cobalt then skyblue... but if you look at the purple cheeks and shade of the blue I think this is actually be a violet sky which sometimes end up looking almost cobalt like Jack) Smokey - cock, Opaline Grey (the cheek patches look grey not blue on my monitor) Sugar - hen, Sky Blue normal Cinnamon - cock, cinnamon yellowface 2 grey Daisy - hen, Cinnamon opaline dominant pied light green Max - cock, violet skyblue opaline (same as Jack above, and you can see the violet bleeding through the wings pretty good) Matilda - hen, Spangle Opaline Grey Green Jill - hen, normal light green

Are You Sure Its A Male ? ?
although the others already answered, he's definatly a boy... but just to put your mind at ease, I have a boy (Roka) who acts the same way.. .he's very quiet and barely does anything but sit on his swing... I think he was scared pretty badly before I got him back in September, and it just takes time for them to get comfortable, some budgies seem to take changes easily, and others seem to be very reluctant to accept new environments or in learning to trust. My males also make alot of chirping noises like yours. So don't worry you havent' been told wrong.

Budgie names
So far, my bird names have all been Japanese names/words because my hubby is into Japanese culture & anime, so it's my little way of getting him on 'my side' to keep more birds :feedbirds: As for the names... Roka - white crest of a wave budgie is df dom pied cobalt and mostly white with clear wings and belly/back is blue Tenjin - god of knowledge and learning budgie is always listening to everything I say, and learns quickly from his bird-friends actions Yoshe - lovely she's my first violet and I think she's LOVELY!!! Tori - bird I liked the name and well she's my 'baby bird' the most lovable of the bunch since she is my first hand raised one Kenja - wise sage He reminded me of a little budda statue, and my hubby kept trying to name him 'pudgy budgie'

Colony Or Selective Breeding
I don't breed yet, however when I begin I will be doing selective breeding. I plan to breed with selected pairings to control the genetic possibilities and for safety of the birds & offspring. Also it will allow me to give a specific diet and keep better records for breeding.

Need Help To Purchase The Right Cage
The cage size I'd recomend for 2 budgies if you dont' want to get a larger cage would be at minimum 18 x 18 x30wide... here is one I use for when I need to seperate out 1-2 budgies from my larger flight cage. an 18 x 18 x 30 cage:

Violets And Breeding
by the way, I did through some more research and found this on Violet Greys http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/genetics/ques...question7a.html

Two Greys
Like Libby said, the blue cheek patches indicate that it's a mauve, and the grey cheek patches indicate a grey. Your mauve also is opaline with the v patch above his wings.

Violets And Breeding
thank you so much Daz!! That's what I was looking for ... I'm definatly going to have to try to find a nice grey and violet pair for breeding *grin*. Anyone have a picture of what these would look like in Daz's outcomes above? Violet Grey and Violet Dark Grey.. I'd love to see how this looks visually.

Violets And Breeding
Can a bird cary a violet and a gray factor? Is one dominant over the other visually? or can they both be visually present? Is the gray factor carried on both the light and/or dark gene (like violets do)? For example .. if a violet could be the following: Lv D, Lv Dv, or L Dv then does grey work the same way? Lg D, Lg Dg, L Dg? If so, then is it possible to have Lv Dg, Lg Dv, or even Lvg D, L Dvg, Lv Dvg, Lvg Dv, etc ? from my understanding if a bird caries a violet gene it will always show and not hidden... if grey is the same, i'm wondering if it would make a violet/grey?

Violets And Breeding
I've been studying violet mutations in the budgies (I try to study first!), but haven't found what combination these would produce.. anyone know? mostly how do the violets act when breeding with another violet, and also a violet with a grey. And also trying to figure out the best way to breed some violet spangle babies. cobalt violet normal + violet spangle = ? cobalt violet normal + grey spangle = ? violet spangle + grey normal = ?

Why Breed?
Thanks Shes a sweety, and one I hope to breed when she gets older. (I hope).. I'm in love with violets, now if only I could find a violet opaline.. hehe. But I'm still worried about not finding homes for babies. I don't mind keeping them but I'd hate to get overcrowded with a bunch of siblings. And I'm thinking to lean more towards healthy pet birds, since those are more fun for me. I did talk to a pet shop who breeds her own birds, that is willing to take any of mine that I don't keep. But not sure if I were to not keep them, if it's possible to find buyers instead to help cover bird costs

What Mutation Am I?
looks like #1 is a cobalt w/violet factor, yellow face type 2, opaline. interesting combo, but cute!

Why Breed?
Thanks for all the answers so far, it's good to hear that I'm wanting to do this for similiar reasons. As for Yoshe, I just recently saved her from a pet store about a few weeks ago, and to start my violets.. here she is in a better picture although her colors look more blue in the picture due to the lighting. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x271/ra...es/000_1858.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x271/ra...es/000_1856.jpg

Why Breed?
Yes, I've read that post, and am aware of the considerations that should be made, hence my posting here to find out this information as one of my considerations for breeding. I have also read the entirety of the Master Breeder online link that Daz posted in another thread. I'm not ready to breed yet (only due to my own research that I believe in doing before hand and my bird's ages to mature unless I decide to get a breeding pair already the appropriate ages). However within a year, I'd like to breed if all goes well. for example the question posted in the questionnaire "12. Homes for the babies ?". I am in the USA, and curious how most breeders find good homes for those they don't intend to keep, since I would like to avoid pet shops. One of the things I'm trying to consider is why breed? Personally I want to for myself (when my birds are mature), as I find the genetics of breeding to be enjoyable and I love the birds themselves... however I want to make sure that if I do venture into the world of breeding, that I do so for a reasonable reason and only after doing the research ahead of time and become a responsible breeder and know the answers to these questions before starting. This forum is a great resource for experienced breeders input, something that is lacking in my local community and I value your responses. I truly would like the opinions of current breeders on why they started breeding when they began. Thanks

A Pretty Hen Chick
how will a double factor spangle feather markings look vs a single factor spangle once she's older?
-
Why Breed?
Where I live there are not many breeders in the area and the ones that do breed are associated with a bird store (they breed for their own pet store sales). I'm interested in begining breeding next year as a private breeder for hand raised violets out of love for them, but curious of input from current breeders. I've already read the breeder faq's on the site by feather. What made you decide to breed your birds and what do you do with the babies once they are raised? How do you control your breeding population from getting out of hand once you start?

Aviary
where did you find that aivary? it's so huge! Are you planning to have open breeding there or just use for non-breeding budgies?
