Great to see updates of Spike. He's looking as cheeky as ever and he certainly has you wrapped around his little toe!
  9. I have a DEC hen in the breeding aviary who paired up with my cinnamon violet opaline cock. They produced one normal violet baby who is a good size for a pet bird and a gorgeous colour. She started laying again before the baby fledged and I dont think I will have many more babies from her, so I didnt want to waste her eggs so I let her go for a few days, waiting for the baby to fledge. I removed her from the aviary in her breeding box with her eggs yesterday. It was in the afternoon and the room I have my breeding cabinets in is quite warm and cosy in the afternoons. I put her in the breeding cabinet thru the top of the breeding box, then placed her eggs in there and some of the "rubbish" from her original breeding box. I then caught her mate and put him in too. I was really happy to see that she didnt even want to come out of the box and has been sitting tight and he straight away went about his duties of caring for her, feeding her, grooming her etc. I checked in this morning and it was so cute. They are both sitting on their six eggs. I just wanted to share a story that went right for me. I look forward to their next lot of babies :budgiedance: Note: The reason she was taken from the aviary is because I am closing the colony breeding down and I only have one clutch left in there and dont want any hens to start anymore.

  15. Awwwww such a cutie! Thanks for the updated picture
  16. I have a messy hen also. She has put down her 2nd clutch and she is already being very messy with her babies. When she doesnt have babies, she keeps herself very clean, but just seems to keep a messy nest box. I have resigned myself to just having to check her babies often and cleaning them myself and cleaning out her box regularly. I have tried putting in things like woodshavings, oats and bran to absorb the mess, but she just cleans that all out and last time I did this repeatedly and she ended up abandoning her babies and setting up a new box. Fortunately, I managed to foster most of the babies and dad looked after the oldest two. None of my other hens are like this and in between clutches, she is perfectly "normal", but has always been a dirty housekeeper
  17. I have concrete floors in all my budgie aviaries and I just get in with a shovel every time they need cleaning out and shovel everything up. They come up surprisingly clean. You are never going to have a pristine clean floor with a bunch of birds living over it
  18. I am green. That is all!
  19. I quite enjoyed my guys having their little carry on and I have high fences and good neighbours. It WAS really freaky though. Dozing off in front of my tv then all of a sudden hearing them all chatting away. I thought something might have spooked them, but they werent flying around spooked, just chattering away in the light of the full moon
  20. This is what I would like to do ultimately. I am currently shutting down my colony and hoping to set up cabinet breeding. I just hope I have as much luck with cabinet breeding as I have had with colony. I have been fortunate enough to have no major issues and they breed like mad!
  21. How terribly sad. It's always the unexpected that catches you off guard isnt it. My thoughts are with you RIP Ollie :angel1:
