Eggs Aren't Hatching
Hi Nerwen, With the dark eggs, all the insides were down in the bottom half of the egg and not fluidy... (if you know what I mean). With the 2 pairs that have eggs, they are super bonded, the hens try to eat any other male that comes near them... I do have other smaller avairies that I could put the pairs into so that they can be by themselves... At the moment, the avairies I've got are 6ft high x 5ft square, there are 3 in a row, one by itself and 2 joined together to make one larger avairy. I have 2 smaller cages that are in our pergola as well. I've been using these cages as quarantine cages when we get new birds, but we have no plans for more birds just yet so that won't be a problem. Thanks everyone for your help, Sandy

Eggs Aren't Hatching
Hi Kaz, All of the birds are together in a large avairy. The perches are all natural, gum tree branches etc. The yellow face pair, this is the cock birds first time breeding but I'm unsure of the hen. While she isn't old, she wasn't a baby when we got her either, I'm guessing she could be up to about 2 yrs old maybe..?? I also don't know if she's had chicks before we got her either. With the other pair, this will be the hens first time breeding but not sure of the cock bird, I don't think he's all that young, maybe a couple of years old, but that's a guess too. I checked on the yellowfaced pairs eggs this afternoon and put the on a torch... she was sitting on 9 eggs! There were 4 that had visible veins inside, some were all clear, no visible yolk or veins and others where the insides were all at the bottom of the egg and dark. I only took out the ones that were clear until I talked to you guys... With the other pair, I'll check the eggs tomorrow as I ran out of time this arvo.... Is there anywhere that I can look (on the net) that will show me the different stages of what goes on inside a fertile egg? Thanks Sandy

Eggs Aren't Hatching
Hi Everyone, We have had a couple of clutches eith different hens, but none are hatching. Our yellowfaced pair had 7 eggs and none hatched so I took them out and she's now had another 7, these have another week to go, so we will see how things go there. Another pair, Aust pied cock and sky blue hen, she's got 9 eggs and these aren't hatching. I was thinking of leaving them in the box to see if any do hatch, but I thought that I would ask all of you guys first. It's fairly cool of a night here atm( we live 30 mins west of Caboolture Qld), but not freezing and the hens do not come out of the boxes. What do you all think? Sandy

Weird
Hi Nerwen The yellow came out a bit brighter in the photo's than what they are in real life, I think because I was taking the photo with the light in the background..... We got her on Saturday and were told that she's about 11 weeks old. In that patch on her back, there are blue and green individual feathers and the black ones. The main body yellow is patchy but there are no white feathers. I can't wait to see what her adult color will be.... When should she start? Sandy

Josh & Sandy's Birds
Are you saying he has only just had his first big moult now or when that picture was taken? What is the colour of the cheek patches on the recessive pied? he looks more grey to me. If he is mauve you will get green normals (dark green) the males will be split ino all will be split blue. There can be surprises since you don't know the history. If he is grey then you can get green normals and grey-green normals with the same splits. With the yellow face dilute boy, he's a bit under 18 mths old, this will be his first clutch. I just checked and they have 5 eggs. I've just taken some more photo's of him and I'll post them as soon as 'Photobucket' will let me onto the site!! hehehe Well this is going to be interesting, isn't it!!! I've never had a mauve pointed out to me by someone who knows what they're talking about (you may need to come and have a look) we live 10 mins past Woodford)), and when I first saw this bird I thought he was grey, but I posted the pics of him ages ago and a few of you said that he was mauve.... His cheek patches are the same color as on his belly. So with these 2 birds, the chicks won't be either color of the parents??? The white and green cinnamon have 2 eggs and the Aust pied and cinnamon sky hen have one egg!!!

Josh & Sandy's Birds
Hi Kaz,Yeah I wasn't sure about the 'double spangle hen', I was told by someone that she may be that, because of the lack of black on the feathers.... and the 'clearbody hen'... I thought that she was a cinnamon at first but the breeder I got her from was adamant that she was a clearbody...... Being new to the breeding game, I thought he'd know better.... The 'pastel violet' was in the middle of a mault when we got him and looked like a moth eaten rug, so I'll have to send some more updated piccies in....SandyThanks for all of your input, I'm learning heaps!!! Hi again,no the yelow hen has red eye's with a white iris, but they only show up red in ways that you look at her. In photo's they come out black. So, if she breeds to the mauve pied, what colors could we get?Sandy

I can't wait to see what we get.... The cock bird is only young and I don't know what his parents were (well neither him nor the hen), He's just gone through a moult and he's come out almost a lemon/lime color in the body.... I'll have to take some updated piccies of him. We also have another hen that we got on the weekend. She's only about 12 weeks old and she's a pale yellow (not even tho) with patches of blue, another one I have to get pics of... The green and white birds look like they're laying and the other pairs have been getting quite friendly in the last week, so we'll see what comes of all this 'loving'..... hehehehe Sandy

Yeah, we're trying to work that out at the moment. His eye's are black with a white iris, so I'm wondering if he's maybe a dilute or something.... What do you think? Sandy

Josh & Sandy's Birds
Hi Everyone, We're not exactly new here, but we've bought some new birds and thought that we'd post some pics for you all to see. What started out a hobby for the kids, has grown into something with a life of it's own!!! :(Laughing out loud): I hope you enjoy the piccies and I hope they don't take too long to download..... hehehe Sandy Here is the first pair which is currently on eggs due to hatch any day now.... Then we have a green cinnamon hen and the white bird.... Then our pastel violet cock and clearbody hen.... Australian pied cock and ??? maybe double spangle hen ??? Texas clearbody cock, spangle hen. and mauve pied cock and lutino hen.... ???? don't know what we'll get from this.... I have these other birds that we were told were 'Laserbacks'.... but after doing some research, we think are actually double factor dominant pieds..... The only color is a spot on the rump. The second on is a cross between a 'laserback' and a violet.... and has color elsewhere on the body as well as the rump.

Colours For Beginners

Colours For Beginners
Dilutes Yellows are the Green version, Whites are the Blues. You can get Grey Yellows and Grey Whites. They should not be mixed up with Lutinos and Albinos who have red-eyes with a white iris. Yellows and Whites have black eyes with the white iris, the body colour of the Yellows range from a washed-out yellow to an apple green, the Whites range from a lightly-suffused blue to a darker blue, the wings are lightly-suffused. Hi, I was just wondering about something here. We have an Albino cock bird that is pure white but with a blue sheen to the feather, but he has black eye's with a white iris. Is he a normal albino, or is he something different? Thanks Sandy, Josh's mum...
