  1. Yeah...he has what I would call a reddish blue look, I though it was probably Mauve.
  2. I don't remember exactly how old he is, as I didn't keep a record, but he's less than a year. I know he's looks like a sky blue in that picture, it must have been because of the flash, but he's definetly not sky blue.
  3. Thanks for that. Yeah I have been keeping birds for a long time, so some wires are rusty, I haven't had any problems yet, but thanks for the advice.
  4. I just put this pair into the breeding cabinet, the hen an Opaline Violet [think she's old] but she has a least produced some eggs & two young with a young green cock, but they were green, as maybe the cock wasn't split for blue, so now I have another cock, this one she now is paired with. I bred him from a Grey Green normal cock [or maybe olive] split for Cinnamon, as he produced this cock. Paired with a Grey Cinnamon Opaline Hen. This young cock I think is a Mauve Cinnamon Opaline [he looks like sky blue in the picture]. I hope to get some violets, if she does the right thing. Do you think my chances are good of getting many violets, it's a dominant so I guess it should work. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s133/gr...oiletmauve2.jpg

Just some pictures of some new nest boxes I have just made up. I haven't used any specific size, my size was governed, by the fact that I had numerous pieces of Masonite this size [sides of boxes] which were used with my bees, which I no longer have any need for, so I used them up here. I have had successful raising of up to 6 young, without problems. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s133/gr...666/boxes-1.jpg
  6. I would be interested in anyone letting me know what to call this bird [colour classification] I know it's a Yellow faced blue probably Type 2, I feel it also is a type of Opaline, then I wonder if it's a clear wing of some type or maybe Spangle? I saw a picture of a bird similar on a UK site, they called it a Rainbow. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s133/gr...66/Rainbow1.jpg I have just paired it with a light green cinnamon hen, they have 5 babies just hatching, to see what results I get.

I know a member here (daz) has an older male that after a few tries was able to fill eggs when he was put on sparks. (I think that was what was used) SShhh Nerwen you are letting all my secrets out.. Norm try vetafarm Sparks It got my Cinnamon Grey Cock back into life. I also use it to bring my Show team into condition for a show. Thanks for the welcome guys & that advice about sparks, I hadn't heard of that, puts some spark into them eh? I have one nice normal violet cock, that I bought, from a pet shop, I knew it looked quite old, but took the chance, thought if only I could get one youngun out of it would be okay. But I'm afraid it just sits in the aviary like a bundle of feathers, with no interest in anything, but maybe if I put it with some sexy young thing in a breeding cabinet it might come good (Laughing out loud).
  8. Thanks guys for that insite...I think I have one or two type 1 & mostly type 11...but lots of my birds are young so maybe they will change later. Thanks Nerwen...like you said in my other post, maybe some birds I think are green are actually genetically blue...I have a couple of birds like your Freckle, in Spangles, they are similar, but are much darker than Freckle, but in their case I knew they were yellow faced blues. I must look under some wings. Daz the two photos I've posted: The first one is the parents the second one are the babies. Are the parents type11 Parblue yellow face and are the two babies type1 yellow face split to type11 parblue? That's a good result Paul, from that pair, I especially like the Opaline chic on the left, looks such an intense colour to get from those parents, but like they say maybe some green will come into it when it gets adult plumage...anyway nice younguns.
  9. Thanks for that idea about the cock being blue series...Rainbow & Nerwen. My eyes aren't what the used to be also, in the aviary these birds have just looked totally green to me, but viewing the photos, you can see the blue content much better. I had thought, because of being so dark green that I would ceretainly use some of these birds, in my efforts to breed some violets, by introducing them to blue series birds.
  10. I have some yellow faces, but I haven't heard of this type 1 or 2, until I joined this forum, can some one explain the difference to me thanks.
  11. Further to my first post...here are some pictures of the rest of his family... His father... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s133/gr...spanglecock.jpg His other sister, I think the same colour...a nice bird, but I like the stronger green markings on the bird I posted this morning. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s133/gr...lineSpangle.jpg Another sister...a very dark green Opaline with strong black wing markings. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s133/gr...kGreOpaline.jpg The same pair bred two light green normals & a cock spangle the same colour as the father but with darker wind marking & it hasn't even molted out yet...Norm. Thanks Rainbow...yes I noticed that blue near the tail, I have notice since I started taking photos to submit that I see more colour in my birds, than I have noticed while they are in the aviary. The old eyes might be going on me (Laughing out loud).
  12. That's a better picture than you had before looks like a male to me.
  13. Thanks for your comments Nerwen & confirmation of the colour. The male is pretty much the same green as the young one, as you say I guess he's a dark green spangle...I can get a photo of him, but the hen is on eggs again. He is only a normal dark green spangle...the colours after the / I meant he is split for opaline & red eye, as he produced this & other opalines & also an albion & lutino in his young. I bought him from a pet shop so don't know anything other about him, only from his breeding results.

Hi I’m new to this group, this is my history…My Grandparents gave me a canary when I was 6, I used to feed it & wait till my Mum put the cage back on the wall [too high for me] one day a cat got it…sob…the next year, on my 7 birthday my Grandparents gave me 4 budgerigars in a cage. I bred from these & built further aviaries when I was old enough. In my teens I use to show budgies also. Some time in my 20’s I sold my birds, before I left my parents house. I have kept some birds most of my life & about 12 years ago went into birds again, I bought a couple of canaries & the rot continued from then. In the last 12 years I kept mostly canaries some years I bred about 200, red factors, glosters & fife. I also bred Quarrions [cockatiels, weiros] finches, doves, quails & African lovebirds. I went overseas 3 years ago & had to get rid of most of my birds, a friend kept some Canaries, Quarrions & Blue Fisher’s lovebirds for me. On my return I started to buy budgerigars again. I love Opalines, Cinnamon wings, normal & opaline. I had never kept Violets & I don’t think there were Spangles when I was young, but I have become very interested in them. I bought 4 violets, but sadly I think they are quite old, I have had trouble breeding them, does anyone know anything about aphrodisiacs for old budgies? I’m very interested in genetics & breeding, I’m looking forward to sharing things with you guys…regards…Norm.
  15. Hi I’m a new member; I will post my introduction when I work out how the system works. My first post so I hope it works. I have just bred this young Budgie, I’m new to spangles, which I like, its father was a dark green spangle/opaline/red eye…mother light green opaline/blue. From my knowledge of genetics I’m calling this young bird a…Dark green [or olive] opaline spangle. Please give your opinion of whether I’m right or your suggestion. I was very impressed by this colour, it looked to me in the aviary that it had no black, just green & yellow, but from the photo I see it has the fine pencilling of the spangle…I hope I can breed from this bird later to get a bird in the violet colour as I think it would be great…Norm. Now to see if I can get the picture to work. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s133/gr...linespangle.jpg
