  1. Realy nice pair Libby...good luck
  2. Female Budgies are by nature quite aggressive, even to their mate, just keep an eye on them & if things seem to be getting out of hand, like if she is pursuing him around the cage & really trying to bite him, it might be better to remove the male. But this is reasonably rare; mostly they just have their spats & get on with life.

Welcome ExElite, glad to have you with us.
  4. Sorry to hear that news Kaz, I don't know what gets into them, when I had that trouble, the cock had been a good feeder & they were no where near starting to breed again, just one day she went crazy. Luckily I saw mine in time.
  5. :hap: :hap: Now there's a thought :hap: But if you look at the link photos, it shows clearly that one is a male & one is a female...back to the drawing board...(Laughing out loud)...if you find the secret about why some breed & some are just not intersted...let me know... :(Laughing out loud):
  6. Like Kaz said they seem to live quite happily in the avairy & learn to climb up the wire, most seem healthy in other ways, or you can give them away as pets to friends. There's the slight chance that they may become carriers, but after reading up on FM I'm not sure that's a bad thing to have a source, especially of low virulent infection, apparently there are much more virulent strains that kill birds & cause dead in shell, so a milder form that imparts some immunity to your flock could be a good idea…but that’s just my personal reasoning. Not something recommended by “experts”.
  7. Kaz is right looks like you may have French moult, if your lucky most of them may grow their feathers back in some weeks or months. I had some trouble this year, but most recovered, but that depends on how severe your infection is. It’s caused by a virus, after some months, the experts say most bird become immuned.
  8. Hard boil the egg & break it up into small piece, before mixing it with your soft food…often Budgies will take some time to take to any new food, at first supply only a small amount & don’t leave uneaten food after a few hours as it goes off especially in the warm weather. Just keep providing it, at least once a day & they will learn to like it & the babies will do better with it. I have had other males take over & help a mother that has lost her male & it succeded 7 raised al the chicks, good luck.

It would be pretty rare for a Budgie to injure its self from a branch, are you sure he wasn’t attached by a Hawk, they can inflict bad injuries even through the wire, with their talons. Especially if the injury was bad enough as to be fatal. Welcome to the forum, sorry about your loss.
  10. Sorry to hear about the loss of your cat Barnsie Kaz, he looked beautiful. Thanks for your update, some of those chicks look like they have plenty of feather. Sad about that chick loosing part of it’s wing it will never be able to fly well.

I think the reason is that your bird, being kept by you for a long time has become “fixed” on you as you are it’s world so it pays particular attention to you & mimics you. All pets are a bit sort of crazy & probably think they are humans more than what they really are, if the wild birds were it’s only world it would mimic them also.
  12. Hi Zenie, welcome to the forum.

Trill in the UK & Trill in OZ, especially with the drought would be two different things, as lots of seed here has been imported & I have heard the rumour that it has been irradiated to get it into the country…don’t know if that’s true but something must have been done to let it in I would think & irradiated seed is dead so no chance of that sprouting. But sprouted seed where possible is good for birds & they certainly enjoy it & is definitely good for birds feeding young.
  14. That sounds pretty complicated to me…there are so many colours & mutations; I think you will just have to wait for your experience to develop. You can put pictures on here & others can help you that way.

    Good one Daz.
  16. It doesn't look like mites to me & it looks like a hen going out of condition. It looks like a Crested Budgie.
  17. Maybe your Budgie is still quite young, as when they are young soon after leaving the nest they will burrow into a corner or any other place they can hide.
  18. Yes nice birds...good luck.
  19. Papaya…Greywing Cobalt Spangle. Mango…Greywing Sky or Cobalt…not clear picture. Lychee…Creamino…YF2 Albino. Lime…all I can guess is Clearwing also. Guava…YF2 Opaline Cobalt. Grapefruit…YF2 Opaline Spangle, Grape…YF2 Opaline, Spangle, Blue or Parblue [part blue part green] Cherry…Opaline, Spangle, Cobalt. Avocado…Cinnamon wing Light Green. Papaya & Cherry….Greywings & Greywing Spangles cocks would be split for Opaline. Papaya & Maongo…Greywings & Greywing Spangles, some Opaline hens if Papaya is split for Oplaine as I don’t think he is Opaline, but has some Blue through his wing which could mean he is split for Opaline
  20. Why I recommend the Ivermectin Wayne, is because it’s so much more effective, you can spray as much as you like but during the day Red mite hide in cracks wherever they can find them & you may not get into all of them & also you can remove all birds from the cages & leave them empty & the mite can live without feeding something like 6 months or even more, but when you treat the birds, the mites will always feed when the birds are available, especially in the warm time of the year. But once the birds are treated the mites will feed & die. Not only will it treat Red mite but Scaly mite & any other mite or louse that eats their blood, also it kills internal worms also. I found it hard to just get one drop of Ivermectin onto the birds, as I found syringes were dangerous & would suddenly give much more than one drop, so I use a small plastic spoon that you get with take away meals & just dip the handle in the Ivermectin & rub the small amount adhering to it onto the bird.
  21. Like Kaz says, try a local vet, some will cooperate & sell you a small amount, others wont, as it’s not registered to use on birds. I bought Genesis pour on, it is sold under quite a few names, but for 250 mls it cost me over $80 so you need a lot of birds to make it worth while or some goats or sheep etc. I put a small drop on the bare patch under their beak, they say to be careful, but I have had no bad effects & I have treated hundreds of birds, but I have never treated young in the nest. Like someone said, it would take lots of Red mite to kill birds, usually you will get them over yourself if you handle the birds, especially in nests, as they love that situation. So you would notice them before they got too bad. So mites may not be your only trouble, but certainly the birds will do better without them. Hopefully it will solve your problem, but at least without the mites, you can see if there is another problem.
  22. They are very hard to tell from those photos, the first one looks like some type of Blue Pied, but the colour is so pale it’s hard to tell. The second one looks like an Albion to me, with some suffusion on its breast. Like you say they both look like females, but it’s not real clear on the first one
  23. If you only use the spray you will probably have to re spray in a week to three weeks, as it probably wont kill any eggs. Ivermectin is good in that it lasts long enough in the birds blood stream to kill off later hatchings.

Like you say we are experiencing lots of problems with seed, due to the continuing drought. Increasing price being one. At the present time I’m getting my seed from two sources, our club is buying from a grower here in NSW, but he has advised us that his Canary seed crop failed this year & I have noticed that the last batch of seed didn’t contain much Canary seed. I am also getting from the local store a commercial mix, but there are rumours going around that this seed wont sprout any more, as it’s been irradiated, as most of the seed is imported from overseas. The Canary seed in this mix is much larger. My birds still seem to be going well & there’s not much we can do at this time. I used to buy straight grains & mix seed myself, but I haven’t tried of late, but in this area it doesn’t seem to be available any more.
