An Unwelcome Visitor....
Oh, I hope it doesn't look like that! poor little budgies will be spending a fair bit of their time being statues. It certainly doesn't sound like it wants to stay away. Feathers.

*** New Budgies Beak And Wing Badddddddd ***
Hiya Neat, they are looking pretty good to me too. A bit of a beak trim and all should be fine. You probably don't need to update your camera, you just need to find the macro setting. It is normally signified by a picture of a flower that looks a bit like a tulip. See if you can find it on your camera anywhere. Feathers.

Feather Town Breeding
Hi all, I have taken a couple of photos of the set up in the room I have commandeered for breeding in. There is a fair bit of romance going on, with hens sorting out their nestboxes by throwing out some of the pine shavings. The 7th pair, that went in this morning, will probably be quicker than the rest. The 3 yr old male is very keen to get started and was sweet talking his hen as soon as I pt them in. Breeding cages No. 1 - 6 Breeding cabinets No. 7 -8 Pair 1 - GF skyblue spangle hen x Mauve Spangle Cock Pair 2 - GF cobalt opaline hen x Grey normal cock Pair 3 - Violet spangle hen x Dk green greywing cock Pair 4 - Dk green normal hen x Skyblue opaline cock Pair 5 - GF cobalt opaline hen x Skyblue spangle cock Pair 6 - GF cobalt hen X Skyblue cock Pair 7 - Exhibition Budgies - Albino hen x Skyblue/ino cock So, which of you clever people can tell me what to expect from each of these 7 pairs? *** New Budgies Beak And Wing Badddddddd ***
Hiya Neat. I did warn you. I knew you wouldn't stop at the budgies you had. Definitely addicted. Let an avian vet check them out properly before you panic about what they have. Did you ask the guy you bought them from where they came from? He obviously cares enough about his birds to keep these two separate. Just make sure that you wash your hands between handling these two and going anywhere near your other budgies. Feathers.

Pairs Still Not Breeding!
Hi Dave. If they are in breeding condition and exhibiting mate behaviour, as you mentioned, then I would leave them to it. Give them another month and if nothing happens, rest them for a couple of weeks and re-pair them (either with the same partners or change it around). Some are just really slow starters, especially if they are too young (they should be at least 12 months old). Feathers.

Infertile Eggs
Hi Jillinda, I'd wait until it is at least 20 - 25 days after the last egg was laid, just in case. You can try them with a different partner if you so wish. More good advice is given in this FAQ: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...d=25&artlang=en Feathers.

Breeding New Pair
Are the birds in breeding condition? i.e. Does the make have a deep blue or deep purple cere (the coloured part above the nose) and does the female have a chocolate brown coloured cere? Feathers.

Behaviour
That is fantastic. I use ivermectim on all of my new birds too, as it kills off any mites, as you said. worming them is great too. Thank you for passing on that information. However these treatments won't help if they have an illness or contageous disease. Budgies often hide their illnesses, as in the wild this makes them vulnerable to predators. Without quarantine you could lose all your birds, which I'm sure you don't want. Feathers

Behaviour
Hi Tecniqe, and welcome to the BBC forum. Basically you have a very dominant, bossy female there. You say that you assume that Bluey was about 3 months old when you got her. Did she have bars on her head going down to her cere (the section above the beak which is turning a creamy brown colour) when you got her? (It would help if you could post a photo). Bluey may have come from a large nursery or aviary where there was a lot of competition for perch space, food etc, and she has bought this bad behaviour with her. I am a little concerned that you are putting birds that you just bought straight into your aviary. If they have a hidden disease or illness when you buy them they could infect your entire aviary. As far as Barry is concerned you should probably take him out and put him into a separate cage for at least 30 days to quarantine him and make sure that he is well before re-introducing him to the aviary. Again, you think he is 3 or 4 months old, so he should have bars going to his cere too (this is assuming he is a 'normal' type of budgerigar). If you could post a photo we could have a look for you. We love to see photos of budgies here anyway Putting in a new male won't necessarily settle Bluey down. She may just see him as further competition. Watch out for her in case she becomes too aggresive and starts to attack the other budgies, as the last thing you want is blood shed. Check to make sure there is plenty of perch space for your budgies and enough food and water containers for them all to feed at the same time. A photo of your setup could also help us determine if there is a reason that Bluey is behaving as she is. Feathers.

High Rise Budgies
Yum! Don't they love their corn. I don't think I have a budgie that doesn't like it. The pear would be a nice juicy sweet treat too. Feathers.

Back To Budgies
Yep, I agree.. find a good breeder. I saw some itsy bitsy budgerigars in a pet shop today, that I would have sworn were bush budgies, except they all looked like they had at least 1 dark factor. Then I noticed that a lot of their budgies, of all colours, were really tiny, which probably indicates poor condition inbred budgies that probably wont live very long. I have just put 6 pairs of budgies into breeding cages and done just what you are talking about. I have put larger budgies (well bred by a member of this forum) with smaller, pet type budgies, in order to increase the size and health of some of my pet store budgies. I, like a few other members of this forum, also keep exhibition budgerigars which I will start breeding separately in July. I find that they aren't at all a lumbering budgie, if they are healthy, but many people don't like that look. Each to their own. feathers.

Breeding Cages Or Cage Fronts
Hi Wayno, I was in Melbourne recently and picked up some show cages from a budgerigar show. There were a couple of people out the front that had breeding cages and stock cages for sale. Get in touch with the Budgerigar Council of Victoria and they may be able to give you details of the people who sell them or tell you when the next show is on so that you can check it out. Feathers.

Have You Heard Of This ?
I'd be a bit worried about what will happen once the babies start hatching. That could end in competition and chicks getting hurt. I'm sure an experienced breeder will be along to give you more advice. Feathers. oops, there you go - Kaz and I posted at the same time
