Thank you for the tip, Bea. We did discuss that with the vet, and he now gets his food divided into 3 times a day. As long as he gets the amount he should have during for one day it is okay to give it to him in smaller portions. He has been eating harrisons birdfoods for the latest 3 years, I think that helps a lot. (´he has chronical megabacteria since earlier, but the cropproblem is not related to the megabac.)

Has your bird had an "enlarged crop" for a long time?? My bird also has other healthissues but they are not related to the enlarged crop. I want to know if this is simething "fatal" or if the bird can live with it...

My budgie (4 years) stopped eating some days ago. We went to se the avian-vet, and he was diagnosed with "hanging crop"... He eats and his crop doesn´t empty , it gets bigger and bigger (stretches, it had gone 4-5 times bigger than normal, and a healthy bird should emty their crops in 10 minutes, it took my Gunde at least 1 hour to empty the crop) and in the end the bird can´t eat. The vet emptied his crop, and he could eat again, the nerves in the crop wasn´t damaged. The vet said it could be a virus, fungus, metalpoisoning.... It could also be macaw wasting disease=PDD... He is now eating and he is happy as always... his poop is also good. (His been medicated with prepulsid, it makes his stomach work, its a medicine for nervdamaged "people" with digestingproblems) Has anybody had similar problems, or heard of birds with problems to empty theis crops? Sorry about my poor english, I hope you understand anyway.

  5. I´ve got my Megabac-s from my avianvet in Sweden. It´s expensive, but I don´t buy a whole jar/can (40g)(it costs about 500 swedish crowns) ´(becuase of the expire date), I just buy 1/4 of the can for about 130 crowns.) If you ever travel to Stockholm they have great avian vets, im almost 99% sure you can buy megabac-s from them. I haven´t seen it available in any store, but you can buy it on the internet, but I haven´t found any european site that sells Megabac-s http://www.birdsupplynh.com/catalog/produc...=605&osCsid=6... Sorry, I thought that Bioplus was some kind of vitamins or mineralsupplies. I´ve read that probiotics could help the birds to digest the food better and improve the "stomachculture". Nice to read that it works. Maybe I should try it to...
  6. I also give my bird (as Parus major) Harrison high potency... it makes him feel better with all this high dosage of protein. He also gets to taste a little bit of "peoples food" (pasta, rice, veggies, bread...)Unfortunately my Gunde can´t eat seeds, it mostly comes out undigested.(He probably has some damage from AGY/megabacterioses in his stomach) So Harrisons has done a great deal for him, but it took me almost one year to make him eat it properly. (He weights about 40 g, when he is sick he gets down to 31g) Every third month I bring some tests to the vet to se if Gundes megabac-level has increased. I keep a very high hygien-standard, I cleand the cage every day, change the paper in the cage tray every day, remove all the faeces (on perches), remove all the old food (I give them new fresh food every day), I wash the food and waterdish every day, aso. I think that this helps to. Gunde lives with his very healthy friend and he has never gotten sick. Gunde gets a relapse about once a year. Then we give him megabac-s in the water for about a month. Some birds can need a low dosage of medicine in their water for the rest of their lives. As you all say, you worry a lot about these sick birds. I am happy for every new day I get with Gunde, couase I never know when it will be his last. Who would have known that budgies could bring so much joy... To Parus major: "Every day they get The Birdcare Company's "BioPlus" in their drinking water. Sometimes I add some calcium in their drinking water and a little vitamins (not too often). " Parus major" If your birds are eating Harrisons properly you should not give them any "bio plus" och calcium. They can get an overdose and that can cause great damage on internal organs. (You shouldn´t actually give budgies high potency harrisons eather (becuase of the large ammount of proteins,) but in my case it has shown that this helps Gunde... maybe it does the same for other sick budgies?)
  7. Do you give your bird megabac-s orally? Or in the drinkingwater? If you give in the drinkingwater dont give your bird any weggies or fruit. Good Luck with little Jada. (I have a budgie who has mebacterioses/AGY chronically. He has had it for almost 3 years and he is still alive so AGY does not have to be a fatal disease.)
  8. Mine budgies aren´t English budgies, they regular/standrad/american budgies. But as in people budgies comes in all sizes and shapes. Some have bigger bonestructure, some tend to eat a lot some eat little and are happy anyway. A regular budgie can weight between 30-45g. The English should weight a lot more.

  11. What a beauty...
  12. As I have been told it is a bacteria with fungus-abilitys. But the "scientists/veterinarians" want to call it fungus couse the bacteria is very a very large/big bacteria... megabacyteria...

Why clip the wings at all? Budgies are natural born flyers, they don´t need to be clipped.
  14. In my search for megabacteriainfo I also found the name Budgerigar wasting disease, and PVD (proventricular ventricular disease).... are this also the same names for the Megabacteria??? To Paul: How long has Pepsi had Megabacteria? Do you know how he got it?

I use Aloe vera juice when I "shower" my birds. I put about 2-3 tablespoons in a spray-bottle(500ml) and then I shower them. The cockatiels feathers becomes shiny and it helps them when they are getting new feathers.
  16. Hi Paul. I have a dose rate on the "applecider"vinegar from a avian vet. It is 1,5ml vinegar/dl water. (1 dl= 100 ml)(It helps the acidlevels(Ph) in the gut to help digest food, but you shouldnt give them that for long periods, max, 10 days) My budgie had the same problem, with undigested seed in his droppings. My bird is probably lucky becuase the megabacteria hasn´t spread to the crop but has stayed in the proventriculus. (He has a chronic version of the megabacteria.) My bird had undigested seeds all the time until I changed his diet. He now eats Harrisons pellets. I know it is hard to change the diet of a old bird... it took me 1 year to get my birds to eat Harrisons properly without loosing weight. I now need to medicate him with Megabac-s about once a year. I now only give my bird a little amount of seeds every day, maybe 1 teaspoon or less. My avian vet recomended to boil the seeds. (to soften them). I also give my birds a lot of human foods wich has helped them, boiled rice, pasta, dark bread, vegetables. (mashed carrot is really good for birds with cropinflammations) a.s.o. I hope that this helps Pepsi, megabacteria is a bad illness, and as you say it damages the birds stomach and if you are unlucky it spreads to the birds other organs. I think that it is only you who can decide if you bird is suffering and when it is time to say goodbye. You know Pepsi best... Good luck.
  17. Well, the most common is that the birds eather dies in a few days after the outbreak och gets at treatment and get symptomfree... It has been found in some birds that they have the bacteria and can live with it... I read somwhere that in australia, a lots of budgies in the wild has it but that it never breaks out... My bird has the same bacteriaamount all the time (little) but when he is really sick the bacteria has started to grow...
  18. Hi! My budgie Gunde (male) has the megabacterioses a chronich version. He has had it for 2,5 years now, and does for the moment not need any medicine. He maintains his weight, but he "changes his feathers" too often His buddy has never got the illness, although they live together. Gunde probably got this illness from his parrent when he was little. He´s been treatend with Megabac-s a several times, and it made his illness under control but does not make it dissapear. I also know a Amazon parrot that has got this disease, chronichal. Does anybody know anything else you can do, except Megabac-S for yous bird?? (sorry about my english, i´m from Sweden... )
