Hi Henrietta, can I just add my two cents (or p:P ) worth.
- Tape down the little flaps on the feeders - budgies are smart and while these do sort of click down, if a budgie wants to, he can easily push them out and escape from the cage. I do know of people whose budgies have escaped this way. Wide packing tape works well - you don't have to remove it totally every time, just peal up, and it will retain its stickiness for some time.
- Run your perches (when you get some natural wood ones:D) so that they are as far apart as possible but so Del boy/girl can still perch on them comfortably and turn around. This allows him to work that little harder and may even give him enough room for a little fly from perch to perch.
- Newspaper on the bottom of the cage (over the grate) and changed every day makes for a cleaner envioment for birdy and easily housework for you! Also gives you the opportunity to check poop and therefore know immediately if there is a change - ie as in bird may be sick.
- Bring the seed bell down from the top centre of the cage - s/he'll have to hang upside down to get to it at the moment and at this early stage probably won't bother.
- While toys are good, don't overcrowd the cage. Make sure Del has enough room to stretch wings out fully anf flit from perch to perch. I find putting the toys around the periphery of the cage works best for me - leaves the centre free for exercise without the toys getting in the way.
- Try him with fresh washed veggies as soon as possible. The older he is the less likely he is to take to eating new things. But not to worry if he doesn't start eating straight away - just persevere. Popular veggies, voted on by budgies, are carrots, peas (preferably in pods), spinach, asian greens, celery, brocolli. Many others, just having a seniors moment. Other people have success with different things of course, birds will be birds. Some people have had success by grating carrot over the seed, or breaking brocolli flowerettes over the seed so that the bird gets little bits when it feeds. Only thing, don't leave the fresh food to get old - after a couple of hours remove it as it can still harbour germs.
And lastly (boy, what an epistle!!!
) if you are still with me, patience, patience and more patience. A week isn't long to adjust to new surroundings, you are still strangers to the little one. Talk to her every moment you can spare. If you think she's lonely during the day, leave the radio on. Doesn't matter what station, so so there is noise. Most of all, good luck with little Del (Boy or Girl)
Great advice
AND remove the shiny bell or mirror thing
and Del is a girl too
Maybe rename Della ?

MY ANSWER Veronica..............if you believe birds have ,menstrual cycles then you havent a clue about breeding birds and you should stop what you are doing right now !!!!!
You have major gaps in your knowledge and its time to take a few steps backwards and do some study.

actually the person above me is wrong, birds do have periods during the warm months. if your bird is laying eggs without a mate then she is on her menstrual cycle. her eggs won't be fertilzed though. its disappointing how a "bird expert" doesn't know this about birds.

QUESTION
My parakeets nose is white?
My girl parakeet used to have a pink nose. As she was supose to. But today, I saw her nose. And it is very noticably white. What does this mean? Is she okay? Is she going to lay eggs? HELP QUICK!!!!
ANSWER yes, she is okay, it is okay for a female bird to change colours, some females, even change to blue, purple, light blue,
a female isn't going to lay eggs, unless she has mated with a male, or she is old enough to have period, but only a few has period.
if you see that she is losing feathers then she is probable molting.

Its irresponsible for anyone to advise putting a nestbox in cage at this point. A white cere ( not nose ) is a sign the bird is not in breeding condition and not healthy enough to be breeding. These are times you do NOT add a nestbox.
A female budgies cere will change colour on a cyclic basis through the year depending on her state of health, and if she is coming into or out of breeding condition.
****Birds do not have "periods" ! An owner of many birds should know this to be FACT.

Breeding cages are best housed separately to your aviary. Most people set up a breeding room or space from a shed or room thats suitable.....leaving budgies in the aviary to fly and have fun and you then select the breeding pairs from the aviary to put together in your breeding cabinets. Trying to have breeding cabinets in an aviary and spare budgies flying about wont work out.

I agree with Maesie....................
and
whats the point in you ordering online meds which are not specific to what ails this bird. This bird is WAY OVERDUE for a proper veterinary diagnosis. If you were to go on your course of action its no different to doing what your friend did by buying over counter meds and treating at random. You will not buy meds online for megabacteria or canker.

IO_O sounds like lots of people having problems breeding in cabinets! I was thinking of converting my breed colony to cabinets but after hearinf so many problems im not sure i should now :-(
Considering all the variables that makes breeding successful.............you thinking its all about cabinets is so far wide of the mark its not funny. This isnt about cabinets.

Well sad news, actually quite horrific I cant think of a word that describes it right now. I went to check on the 2 in quarantine downstairs... its a closed room, brick walls window open a crack for air, lights on, there is a desk I have the cock birds cage on, clean white desk, about 3-4 inches from the wall. I came in and saw him laying on the bottom of the cage. I hadn't been home long, so was the first I had been in there in many hours. He was so alive when I left him, he wasn't even sick, quite the opposite he was in peak condition, I only quarantined him because his mate was sick.
Well he was covered in blood, the cage covered in blood, his mate in distress accross the room. I only set that cage up last night and went over it with a fine tooth comb, no sharp anything anywhere.used that cage for years. It looks like it came from his chest and his leg, like little puncture... like maybe a rat. There is a toilet in there and pipe in the ceiling with a crack next to it. Thats the only thing I can think of, how it got to him on the desk up there, its all slippery sides. He was my very best bird, he was show material I only ever got one chic from him, and its one thats sick. Im gutted I just don't believe it, Ive had him years.
Rats and mice can climb up walls, especially brick ones. And they can leap quite a way.
The injuries to the bird is exactly what a rat would do.
Sorry for your loss

Your friend has faith in over the counter petshop medications when she should be taking her bird to a decent avian vet. Not all generic medications fix everything.
The bird could have canker or it could have megabacteria. Both of those require specific meds to fix it.
Tell her to stop wasting time ( which birds dont have once they show signs of being ill ) and stop wasting money on pet shop meds and stop believing that pet shop staff know what they are doing ( because they dont ) and get along to a vet who can take some swabs of the crop and ascertain the correct diagnosis and get the bird medicated for what it ACTUALLY has and not guesswork.

Preening not pruning. Pruning is for trees
As fas as antibiotics goes....you can use betadine on birds, but there is also a dry anitbiotic powder you can get from chemist shops called Medi Pulv that you puff into wounds too. Some people use that mercurochrome too.
The cheesy gunk cant be allowed to build up. Firm pressure at the base of where it is will push it out and then you medicate the hole where its coming from.
