  1. When assembling Daz's nestboxes next time you do it....the rounded off sections on the sides are meant to be on the top of the nestboxes and not the bottom.
  2. Good plan. I have some nestboxes withb double sliders....a plywood door and an inner glass door.
  3. Yes.......she is normal size
  4. Opening a nestbox that isnt in a closed area will always run the risk of escapesno matter what design. Even some of the birds breeding learn how to open the lids and escape. If you have a large net put that over the nestbox as you check so any that get past you dont get any further thasn the net. Also you may want to drill a hole and insert a nail or screw to stop the birds lifting lids to get out as well. I have many birds who learn how to escape the nestboxes or breeder cages and mine are within a birdroom. I open my birdroom door very carefully these days
  5. 3 same sex would be best. Females rarely fight over a male but males will fight over a female.
  6. I am in trouble with one of my hens , at the moment I put my hand into the nest I got two blood drawing bites out of three and retreated immediately Today , as the second egg had to be hatched and I had a fight with the hen for 10 seconds to make her leave the nest , hopefully this time I was holding a millet spray in trying to convience her to out . Checking the nest boxes with this hen is a problem and I am afraid of causing any harm to the eggs or the chicks hatched . I am also a bit afraid of having more bites and bloody fingers  Sorry if adding a question under the topic is against the forum rules , I can open it again in Breeding Help section , is there any way having her get used to regular checks and cleaning ? I would suggest you wear some cotton gardening gloves to protect your fingers a little....if she wont leave by trying to persuade her out, then put your gloved hand in back of hand uppermost, you put your hand in that way aiming for under the hen. That way you can lift her on the back of your hand, and protect the eggs under her at the same time. She will either carry on at you sitting on the back of your hand or she will get out. Doing it this way, you can lift her off the eggs and look under her. The gloves will afford you some protection. Depends too on the style of your nestboxes.
  7. Any news about Caesars pedigree ? PS I am hanging out for photos
  8. How are you going MB ?
  9. A previous member had nestboxes which changed size as needed....so here is his previous posting about it............ Hi Daz and everyone, I found your topic on nest boxes quite interesting with some good ideas. I too have been experienting with nest boxes. I have progressed to this point with my boxes and are having good results. I intentionly made my boxes on the larger side, to give the hens more room to move when the chicks get older. This had its problems at first, mainly being the hens trying to keeps eggs and newly laid chicks warm enough. I then came up with the idea of a partition to make the boxes smaller to help the hens. Well this worked a treat and are having good success, also with the partition it has given me flexability. When the chicks get feathered up I remove the partition which frees ups more room in the boxes and has given the hens space when they lay again. It also provides more air to the birds. I have used an acrylic clear front with holes drilled in to create the air to circulate, this also makes it possible to view chicks with them falling out or the hens getting upset. I have wood fronts that slide in front of the acrylic covered boxes to give the the security that they need. I have been experimenting lately with the warm weather we have been having, by leaving the wood fronts off during the day. With holes in the acrylic fronts it allows the boxes to keep cooler during the warmer period, so far the hens have been happy with this and it gives me the oportunity to vies chicks and see how they are going without intruding. The boxes are attaches to the side of the breeding cabinets which have a hole in the side. The larger sides on the nest boxes allows the hens to be able get out easerly if I have to slide the inner nest boxes out for cleaning etc. Well it's all going fine so far, love to get your feed back. Cheers Paul http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e375/ultra777/000_0179.jpg

  14. Hi Ben....there are a few methods. 1. try differing ways of serrving it.........grated, finesliced, hanging from pegs in the cage, skewered on kebab skewers etc 2. Start with just a few easy to use vegies.....frozen and defrosted baby peas and corn ..they love corn for its sweetness. 3. Mashed boiled egg. well theres many ways, but one way is to sprinkle the birdseed over the top so they get the taste of the vegies accidentally. All it takes is one budgie to start eating and the rest follow. Best you persist and offer something everyday and eventually they will crave it and seek it out.
  15. I will look for you Cant find them but have PMed Daz for you so he can send you the plans.
  16. It is a pity to go to a vet that isnt up to the full task of treating a bird due to lack of qualifications and knowledge. Hope you get answers soon
  17. Your job Richo. A SMART man like you should be able to manage the violin.
  18. The spot on kind is different from the kind that goes in the water. Catching eight budgies for spot on cant be too hard to do.
