I cant wait till the birds go in. Why do you say about 24 breeding cages ? I run nearly forty mate okay sorry i seen this The back wall will be my main melamine cages...the ones I have made in sets of three with dividers.....two sets along the back wall ( that's 6 wide by 4 high =24 cages ). The cages from the front wall into the centre of the room will be my wire cages in melamine units.....those I made are on wheels so I can move as necessary for different configuration or move to clean. Those units are vertical and three cages high. That was the old planning stages of the birdroom which is now done..........ages ago....I was only talking about the back wall of cages ( 24 ) PLUS the other cages in the room as well as those. I actually have forty breeding cages.

Budgies seem to know more than we do about the weather coming up....a hot summer. I would give up and wait till cooler times next year if I was you.

Yes you are right Jen. If both parents are split rec pied and one is dom then there is a chance of getting a combination pied (combined recessive and dominant pied). Aha ...is that what you were trying to say Jen

I used to use a mozzie zapper. It went missing so I havent used one for awhile.

Renee and Tony came over today to help get the aviary finished. Its so close to being done now, its not funny :rofl: Tony was good with filling holes between colourbond and concrete pad and was very good on the drill. Renee is a great organiser and Renee and I mostly did the perching. Renee cleaned the wire down with vinegar....smelt like a fish and chip shop in there :fingerscrossed: We all installed the front window. Yet to do..... 1. Clad front of aviary with colourbond, add any trim needed. 2. finish of tightening up and joining some of the wire on the popout section. 3, add a couple more screws here and there 4. I have to finish the window section from birdroom to aviary. 5. Ken has to check doors from birdroom and flights open easily and lock. 6. Wire mesh the front window Then all done. :hap: I put a small flight cage in one of the flights for the youngsters in it to get some fresh air until release. Some photos....

Agreed. No birds under 12 months should be in an aviary where there are nestboxes.

Dominant pied CANNOT be hidden in a recessive pied. Either one is dom pied or it isnt. Dominant pied is a dominant gene and recessive pied a recessive gene. A dom pied can be split recessive but a recessive CANNOT be split dom pied. :fingerscrossed:

Its called tail pumping and in most cases can be a sign of illness. You will have to assess each bird on an individual basis. Check them over for weight loss, poopy bottoms and signs of parasites.

Buyer older females is a hazardous choice to make. In most cases you will have problems.

Like i said....There are "breeders" and there are "breeders" good and bad in all walks of life. Same goes for petshops...Good and bad. But if you can find a good breeder then you get a little more with your purchased bird than you likely would get in a petshop. Background history of its parentage and grandparents and great grandarents history of longevity or health. A good breeder will be able to sex a bird more accurately than some of the guesses pet shop staff take, and likely will not try and pass off an adult with clipped wings as a tame baby. In most cases. I guess the thing is, we hope the breeders you will find will have the knowledge and integrity some of us bbc breeders have. Some of the dodgy backyard breeders ( and i have found them too in the past ) .......These in most cases are the commercial breeders who stock petstores and do not care about the measly $3-$5 they get for a bird. Of course there are good breeders who sell to pet stores too. BUT the original poster here on BBC has the option of buying from a reputable BBC member, so thats really cool.

If it werent for the deaths of my father and father in law over the past fortnight or so, I am sure I would be ecstatic But its taken the edge off it a bit. I will try and get excited watching each bird find its wings and enjoy the space Its so close I can taste it

There are exceptions of course, and there are breeders and there are breeders. As petshops rarely pay more than $5 for a budgie the calibre of the breeder goes down. Most breeders who care about their budgies do not sell them for $5 or less, and they would rather meet in person the new prospective buyers of their lovingly raised birds. With your lovely budgie did you get any history of its parents ? health history or otherwise ?

I did a quick search on this forum and came up with: Total Male: 158 Total Female: 226 Total Members:1701?? When you do a member search there are 1707 but according to the forum there are only 1701 right now... That makes for a whole lot of 'Not Sures!' :D so much for people putting down their sex when registering PS reminds herself to set that as a necessary field of info

I agree....Sorry. Your timing is all off. No amount of wanting to breed these birds right now will make it all happen without issues. Holiday the birds till the summer is over.

Auctions are fun....a great way to get "carried away". Lets hope most of the birds we bring home are up to our expectations When I first started out in show budgies and in a club, the hardest thing was being accepted and listened to. There was a "boys club mentality" in the first club I joined back then and it really seemed you were judged before you even uttered a word. What seemed like an inner circle elite group going on made it hard for newcomers to both feel welcomed, assisted and even listened to when questions were on the tip of ones tongue. Females may have been perceived as "playing at budgie breeding"by a dominance of male members, and only once my birds began to do well on the show bench would some of these elite male members even deem fit to talk to me. I felt I had to prove myself to fit in. I joined other clubs to even out the balance and to have other options re members who would talk and share and socialise. Then we were always being pressured to show birds....not a single show cage back then was to be had...they were like gold. My first showcage came by it being loaned to me by a very nice man who would mentor me in those days. He told me after the show it was mine to keep. Gestures like this from the minority helped a lot. I am glad to say that things are changing, maybe with the coming and going of some members, maybe with some of us novices now having proved ourselves worthy But it must be said, that in a lot of cases starting out as a novice in some clubs can be "difficult" at best.
