The Great Seed Discussion
Whole oats are so cheap and better for the birds. Here is some agriculture dept info on oats http://www.agric.wa.gov.au/PC_92033.html?s=1633286049

Culls and Helping the Purchaser
Just as I am on BBC and other bird forums and yahoo bird answers etc etc on the internet TO HELP PEOPLE ( something, I might add that is ingrained deeply in me and I cannot do otherwise ) ............I will always try to help someone with ring info or history of a bird to the best of my knowledge. Our Amy S is an example....she has the history of the bird she received off me. Price or where it was purchased should not be an issue. Although there are many breeders who dont want to know once they have culled birds. I cant be like that and its a pity to hear that negative philosophy occurring here on BBC :rip:

The Great Seed Discussion
There's a lot of confusing info out there being perpetuated by common usage of phrases about seeds being fattening, which ones are or arent, when you should feed them or not etc etc. Many of us end up saying what we have heard others say and not so much of the research ourselves. I would like to open some discussion on all the tyes of seed one at a time and hope there will be some lively input from others so we all learn a little more tomorrow than we did today. I will start it off about OATS A seasoned budgie breeder tells me not to use hulled oats due to the processing it goes through. She says it literally ends up husked twice...once by the processing and the second time by the budgie. A hulled oat is steamed and kiln dried apparently and creates a new harder exterior that the budgie then husks again to get at the middle. Lost nutrients ? Oats suggested by this breeder are are clipped oats. Correct terminology aparently is Oats are whole....hulled oats are called GROATS ? I have taken to buying oats now whole, slightly crushed for easer of eating by the budgie. Serving seperately in a dish in the flights. Guess which dish they go for first ? The whole oats dish. :fear Thoughts ? :rip:

Types Of Natural Tree Branches
Commonly called Aussie Willow Myrtle..................over here in W.A. they grow it around every street, every park and every school playground so its easy to find. I have given up on gumleaves now as the peppermint tree get such a good result. I am sure its used as a budgie medicine too. When I supply it regularly the budgies are very healthy.

Types Of Natural Tree Branches
Cec Gearing put me onto the peppermint tree, and my birds go mad over it. Even in breeder cages they see or smell it coming and are clambering all over the cage front waiting for theirs. None of them have complained about headaches either :rip: They chew the bark off it as well.

Snake Warning...
I am really sorry to hear the snake got to your birds.... happier to hear you werent hurt. Our dugite recently didnt get into the birds aviary but they can get through the smallest cracks. Ken discovered afterwards it had eaten one of his quails.

Plastic Nest Boxes
Are they these ones ? http://thecragstud.webs.com/apps/webstore/...cts/show/405928 http://thecragstud.webs.com/newsizenestboxes.htm http://thecragstud.webs.com/apps/webstore/...cts/show/888782 If so, could you inquire about their assembly process and maybe ask for them unassembled and do it yourself when they get here ? Yeah Kaz - they were ones i was looking at. May get a couple this year to experiment with, will let you know how it goes. Heathrow, have you thought of making a plan for something like those and going to a few places that make perspex objects and getting quotes. Perspex comes in non see through and colours as well. If you get cheaper quotes for greater numbers of them they will become a saleable item and others may order some as well. Might be worth the inquiries...save shipping costs etc. Factor it all in, and shop around.

Ring Question
Got some questions regarding the Australian ring colours: So, the ring colour in 2009 was red.....birds with red rings hatched from September 2008 to August 2009? Is the Australian ring colour for 2009/2010 BLUE? So, did a bird with a blue ring hatch in September 2009 or later? Thanks for your help. Ring colour for 2010 is BLUE and rings were issued early September 2009. Not everyone who got blue rings would use them in 2009 as there were differing schools of thought as to when people used them based on how many red ringers they had bred and if they were aiming for the Nationals.
