  1. I was thinking the same thing
  2. Thanks heaps for the photos. Great to see our budgie " cousins" out there in their natural habitat.
  3. Thankyou Nubbly for the photos Really nice birds............a couple I am drooling over too
  4. Knowing how some other breeders euthanase their sick or inflicted birds you could have turned that comment around on him. I have heard it too, and I just say back to them ( knowing how they euthanase their birds ) how would you like your neck broken by a strong pair of hands or how would you like to be in a box attached to a car exhaust ?! I still think my method is better than the more violent ways.
  5. Bear in mind that hens rotate eggs in and under them and out again and in and under to regulate temperatures. Even if you see an egg out, it isnt always about a forgotten egg or an egg mistakenly out of the nest, it can be just its turn to be out from under for a moment. The hens know about incubation better than we do most of the time. Touching the eggs, shifting them, moving them back under may not be in the master plan of that particular hens incubation sequence. Havent you sometimes looked in a nest and seen a hen reach out to an egg and pull it under her ?
  6. These are dead in shell chicks. this can be caused by the hen getting off the eggs and letting them go cold, by her addling the eggs, and by the chicks dying in shell due to disease or contamination. Never handle eggs to candle as this can contribute to this too.
  7. It could still be in the cock to, as anything recessive just needs to meet up with another bird carrying the same recessive trait. Recessive traits can hide for generations sometimes and only come out when the partner also carries the same gene. Greywing and dilute works a bit that way too.
  8. I find a lot of DF dominant pied have one iris ring and none in the other eye.
  9. Sorry Kaz but the last part of your statement is one of those old wive's tales. Mops appear in show stock and pet stock alike. It is more prevalent in show stock due to inbreeding and regular supervision. In colony bred pet stock the inbreeding occurs but not in the same as as show stock and when a mop appears it is usually not detected unless the owner checks the boxes regularly, when the young fledge they either learn quickly to fend for themselves or die. It is not uncommon for bodies to be hidden in the aviary litter and go undetected. Interesting but the parents of this bird are not related. the hen has been brought in for an out cross. I dont think anyone was actually saying about them being related.

  11. I havent pushed the other cabinets up to it properly yet.....but I will take more photos tomorrow and I will try and do a diagram too :hmm: PS No removable trays. I use newspaper in the bottom of all my cabinets anyway, but that corner one isnt able to have trays due to the odd shape. These photos were taken before my Saturday main clean so some of the cages still need cleaning today BUT Here is how the cabinets look going around the corner. Left Corner Right What I did was, I have vertical units going around all the walls. Corners were a pain in the A$$ because there was wasted space. I like to maximise space whereever possible. So I worked out the measurement from the last vertical unit into the corner, and then did the same along the other wall to work out exactly what angle I needed to cut the corner cabinets to fit in there with maximum cagefront space, Then allowed extra for the nestboxes to attach to the side. Now I have a snug fit all around the walls of the cabinets and still they can be pulled forward on their wheels to be cleaned under neath and behind. Being as the vertical units are on wheels I can move them anywhere in the birdroom with no disturbance to the birds. They dont mind being wheeled about at all. I can pull cabinet units out and vacuum and mop the floors. PS have to redo some of the vertical cabinets as Ken put the backing on some units before he squared them up so they dont stand vertical and level upright. I have to take the backs off those units, square them up and then put the backs on again so they stand straighter. My husband isnt good with woodwork, or anything straight level or square. Thats why I do it all.
  12. The attacked hen is doing okay.....she is eating, hasnt lost any weight, her wounds are being treated and her eyes are being treated. Once the trauma has subsided from her eyes I will do an eyesight test for her and see exactly what sight she has or hasnt lost. her beak has suffered some trauma also but its mostly to the top layer and should repair itself. you will note that I DONT euthenase everything with an issue. A bird has to be given a chance if there is one. The vet I worked for years ago told me " you dont give up on an animal until it has given up on itself " . I try to live by those words wherever possible.
  13. Warmth, which you have done. and she may lay her next egg in the hospital cage. Due to the attack she may stop after that and maybe its best if she does for now and let her recover for awhile. What cage were you using and what divider if the other birds were so close to be able to get through ?
  14. **KAZ** replied to starlina's topic in Budgie Talk
Well it seems you wont be able to get these birds to a vet. If what you read about the meds is correct, ( and I have looked it up too ) I would then take that chance rather than nothing. I say go for it, as well as the warmth. If the issue is something other than poisoning from the frogs you might see a result. If its poisoning from the frogs there is likely nothing you can do. http://www.healthypets.com/bibidhy101ta.html
  15. Have you thought that this may have happened because of your name SPLAT ?? Maybe if you had a name like BOUNCE, the egg would have bounced and you would have caught it and saved it
  16. You guys will have to use your BUDGIE SMUGGLERS
  17. I should have bet on this I knew either you or Dave would jump in here and say something like this
  18. We have all done things like this mate
  19. This happened just five seconds after these two were introduced and put in the new corner cabinet. http://s741.photobucket.com/albums/xx57/pr...rent=004-34.mp4

  21. I am trying to figure out why a freshly laid egg needed to be warmed in the first place.
  22. Sounds like things are getting busy in your birdroom Splat. Despite the car trouble, I think you are going to have many reasons to get excited about whats in the nestboxes
  23. dilute or greywing dom pied chick
  24. First of the corner cabinets completely finished and with four pairs of birds in The birds must like the space because just seconds after adding one of the pairs to the new box.......... this is how they showed their approval I also made the nestboxes
