  1. The baby quail died......I guess it was too far gone when I found it. Still hand raising baby canaries. Went in Kens aviary tonight just before dinner time and found a baby canary lying on its side on the ground, out of its nest ( looked like parents had tossed it out ) and it was stone cold and near death. I brought it inside warmed it by warm breath cupped in my hands and then gave it a warm feed. The baby canary has now spent the past two hours wrapped in tissue and down my cleavage. Its the best way I could think of to keep it warm and get its body temperature up. So far so good Pardon the cleavage shot
  2. Yeah I believe member Nubbly has had a bit to say about that
  3. Best plan is to take him too. Travel is best not perching but on the base of the cage. Make it comfy. Dont try and have water in the cage for travelling...he can get moisture from seed or some silver beet or carrot. Take his seed...............dont forget it and try and substitute along the way. Cover the cage so he doesnt frighten and to protect from draughts. Peg down any cage doors or he could be out and flown out the car window in a flash.

What a fantastic range of beautiful babies you have there !!!! I would be proud to see them flying in my aviary
  5. There will always be seed in breeders cages, and husks unless you bother the ^%&^$ out of the breeding pair at least twice a day cleaning. Thats just the way it is. Mothballs ? Not me. I know how bad they stink and I know of the toxicity of them. I'd rather not take that chance. I run a mozzie zapper and it works GREAT
  6. Part of knowing what your club doesnt do is listening to what other clubs do.........isnt it ? Thats the way we work it out. If I had my wishes about what I would like a club to do.......... ** I would like to have guest speakers like avian vets, and bird geneticists. ** Discussions pertaining to aviary design and management..what works and what doesnt. ** I would like to see birds brought in for discussion......the birds we sometimes scratch our heads over type, or condition, whats " fixable" and what isnt, when to euthenase.......reason being so some newbies and even others can learn by hands on approaches and visual aids. ** I would like to see the breeders of old ( even if now retired ) come in and discuss how things were in their day and what has changed. Even if these old breeders have to be collected and brought in by members. ** I would like to see all junior or beginners being given at least six months free membership ( I have already got this going here ) so they can figure out if its for them in the first place. ** I would like to see a proper mentorship program implemented.........one or two seasoned breeders paired up to each newbie to assist with practical assistance as well as advice by phone at any time. ** Assistance given to members who cant get to meetings by car for whatever reason........car pooling. Lifts offered to assist members getting to a meeting. Too many people know of some who cant drive and dont offer to assist even if they are in the same area. ** We have had ( over here ) busybees to assist some members get there aviaries erected and operational. Too many who cant cope are left struggling. If the Lions Club and Apex can be so community minded inb other areas why cant a budgie club ? Whats wrong with a combined meeting with busybee to promote fellowship and good spirit ? ** Hold meetings in turn at some members homes instead of a hall, so we all get closer in ways that we realise what each other has and is going through. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am sure I will think of more now I know where you are coming from
  7. Whats the coloured stuff in the budgie seed ?
  8. Please post a better photo
  9. Its the hen usually who get nasty and gets the chicks out of the way for a second round not the cock. Some cocks arent good feeders though. Some dont do it at all and the second a chick begs them for food they get nasty.
  10. No real reason to change the levels of the perches
  11. Budgie males cere like this is considered in breeding condition Rosie may be about to go out of condition where her cere is so brown and wrinkly its about to peel off and go out of condition. Light to medium brown is the colour you aim for. You need to have a golden face to begin with..........paired to a blue. Yes Look in our mutations section
  12. If you mean scruff and rosie then rosie isnt a green budgie. She is YF blue.....and recessive pied too.
  13. It talks about show budgie faults. Things like short mask, bad spots, crossed wings etc . Basically you dont put two birds together that are considered to have the same bad fault. Only applies to show budgies really green is dominant.............so unless the green bird is split for blue you only get more green budgies. Yes you will need a net. Same place I said to get the breeding cages..........cheaper there
  14. Running front to back on each side of the cage is fine
  15. in relation to what ? I dont know what you mean either by quoting good and bad points
  16. I am sorry she died. I do hope you have learnt that you dont go dispensing mite and worm treatments and baths to rescued birds in distress. Three things you should NOT have done that would have made things worse I am afraid. The warm bath was not needed and compromised her body temperature.
  17. Cere colour and breeding condition relies on the bird being in tip top shape as far as healthy goes, being the right time of year that they feel like breeding, having an excellent diet, NOT moulting etc Your job is to NOT put any birds down to breed that arent in the best possible condition. Your job is to prepare them months ahead of breeding. Not to put down to breed a bird you just got and dont know the history of.
  18. Not usually.
  19. I saw an egg in a nest today that had gone discoloured like when the chick dies in shell. I took it out so I could throw it away. Then I saw a hole in the egg. It looked like the chick had begun to hatch but had stopped and died. As I was holding it I heard something. A peeping. The chick was still alive I peeled away the eggshell to find a live chick. It had begun to hatch but had stopped and had partially dried out and stuck to the shell. It stopped its hatching and could go no further. I checked it in the nest a short while ago and its doing fine. If I hadnt found it when I did it would have died. This too is down to humidity I believe.
  20. These feathers virtually grow as you watch them. The flights have grown an inch a day the past 2 days. The mother has an egg on board and is trying to lay again so she will be removed to another cage as she may well attack the fledged babies right now. She's in a real nasty mood.
  21. Check this out and identify the poop your bird is doing http://www.birds-online.de/gesundheit/gesallgemein/indikatorkot_en.htm once you match it to your bird..........show your dad Too many people equate the initial cost of the bird to the cost of a vet visit. If we applied those rules to humans there wouldnt be too many of us left.
  22. You keep saying he's Greg's dog, but truly he is yours. You spend more time with him and you train him. I am sure Jake thinks of you as his special person too.
  23. The growth rate of feathering is very rapid
