  1. Throwback, I like that conclusion too I was thinking that too but didn't know if he was maybe too dark. I would do what Kaz suggests and see what he says.
  2. Reading on the mutation page that I use it says it is very difficult to see violet on a mauve budgie so taking that into account I would say he is not, I don't know enough about dusk budgies, so I am going to go with a violet that has 2 dark factors or a violet with the slate added factor. That is my theory

Can't tell you the mutation need clearer pics of the front and back and like Libby said I am leaning more toward male because the cere is smooth and round.
  4. Doing more investigating he could also have the slate added gene. Here is their explaination along with the link, so you can see the coloration. Slate is a color-adding factor similar to grey and violet. Slate produces a very dark bluish grey in white-based budgies. The darkness of the slate varies slightly according to the dark factor of the bird. Slate, like violet, can be present in a green (yellow-based) budgie, but only produces a darkening effect. True slate only appears on blue (white-based) budgies. This variety is extremely rare. http://www.budgieplace.com/c_slate.html Norm can you post a picture of the dusk pls ....Raven - How old is he? His colour may change when he goes thru his moltsI think if you look under mutations and do a search for dusk and Norm as the poster you will see his budgies since posted them in there .
  5. no I don't share budgies
  6. Very cool, you are sending me one of those babies too right
  7. Norm is the one that knows about dusk budgies so I couldn't comment on that. What I see to my novice eye is a Violet budgie like my Merlin.

The forum Budgie Pictures right above there it gives you info on posting and that all pictures must be resized to 450x450 or they will be turned to links. Welcome and I look forward to seeing Sunshine.

I added this to the unsafe list :yellowhead:
  10. First you have to understand that there are 2 base colors in a bird. A green bird is a bird that has a yellow base and then the blue coloring is mixed to make a GREEN bird. A blue bird is a white based bird is a bird that lacks the yellow and therefore it is a white based bird. The face of the bird usually shows the base of the bird expect in the Yellow Face Variety. In yellow-based budgies the blue in the body feathers combines with the yellow base pigment, which results in a bright green, the most common variety. In white-based budgies there is no yellow base pigment, so the blue structure of the body feathers results in bright blue coloration. If a green bird carries the Yellow Face Gene is under debate from what I read I have not read anything concrete (unless someone else has) that they carry the gene. The only way you would know for sure is if you bred a Green Budgie to a TRUE white faced budgie because there are WHITE faced budgies that are carrying 2 yellow face genes which makes them visually white faced but they are not a TRUE white face. Does that help? So your question is will you get a yellow face? ONLY if a GREEN bird can carry the YF gene ONLY if your blue bird has 2 yellow face genes and is not a TRUE white face You will ONLY get a blue bird if your Green bird is carrying the BLUE gene but then you still may only get all Green it is just a %. If you want this type of mutation you are better off using Yellow Face 1 or 2 Blue Birds (male and female) and if I am correct Norm? Didn't you say that Golden Face is a gene separate then Yellow Face? Someone I thought said that here.

  13. Introducing budgies slowly instead of just putting them together is sometimes the best thing. This is what I did with my 2 boys because Pretty thought Merlin was a wonderful mating partner in the beginning and there would be fights. I only let them interact out of the cage at first and once they were used to each other then, in the cage during the day when I was home when that was okay then all night and permanently. It sounds like a lot but when you have a smaller cage vs a very large aviary it is sometimes necessary to take it slow so no one gets hurt.
  14. He is not being dominant but protective over his toy and I would remove it before he gets too protective and hurts her. Mirrors, bells and anything reflective budgies can tend to start protecting. Make sure you also rearrange the cage around at least 1x a month it helps with the protective "it is my toy" behavior.
  15. she is beautiful, I hope you entered one of her pics for April Budgie of the Month

drying fruit is really quite easy you can do it in the oven or you can do it with a dehydrator which are fairly inexpensive we have one where Tim makes beef jerky. I bet if you do a google there are ways to do it that are very inexpensive.
  20. You will have all normal green babies unless your "olive" male is carrying the recessive pied gene and the blue gene too. There are always surprises with sex-linked genes that the male can carry and will give to his hen babies so that is always interesting.
