April 27, 200619 yr Welcome to the board.. You have some beautiful birds. The whiteface cockatiel near the bottom is very pretty. The conditions of some of the cages don't look too good. Are you using some sort of bedding or shavings? I think that you may find that it is easier and more hygenic to use newspaper or something else to line the bottoms of the cages. I use paper towels. You may also find that it may benefit some of the birds to invest in larger cages at some point. As a general rule .. bigger is always better.. as long as the bar spacing is still good for the species -- 1/2 inch for budgies and ,I think, 5/8 inch or smaller for cockatiels.
April 27, 200619 yr Lovely birds you have and welcome too. I use newspaper, easy to take out each morning and throw away.

I was thinking the same thing, Hurdybirdy. Do the birds have lots of out time?
April 27, 200619 yr Lean Why is there no perches in the white faced tiel cage....eggs on the floor of the one pair of keets, and like an inch or two of uneaten food/poop on the floor of all the cages? Thats disgusting, no offense! When you clean them up, i will be glad to speak to you, but im not very impressed Kirby
April 27, 200619 yr Author Whew been on here less than 24 hrs and already getting blasted! okay first of all for those who had POLITE questions yes my birds get out times yes the cages are fine (for now) the two normal grey tiels don't get out because they aren't tame but we are working on it Edited April 27, 200619 yr by lean2078
April 27, 200619 yr Lean....welcome... I love the birds! Have any of those tiel eggs hatched before? I just dont see why it is that those conditions are kept so nasty.... I dont know about you, but would you want to live on/in a land fill dump? With no where nice to sit, and to walk on your own food? I dont tink so...

When you clean them up, i will be glad to speak to you, but im not very impressed Kirby Kirby in general it's polite in society to wait for the person to answer your question before proceding to make additional comments However since politeness doesn't seem to be your stong suit here is my response to you, the pictures of the birds in the dirty cages were taken the day i got them the two tiels were got in that condition along with pretty boy the white face tiel, pretty boy does have a perch but didn't have one when i got him he does have one now, as for your comment about my keets having an egg REALLY WHERE because i'd love for them to have a clutch but that will be impossible as the two in the cage together are females as for you not being impressed with me i guess the feeling is mutual a little politness is called for on forums i do believe so since you say when i clean up the cage you'll talk to me i guess my thought are i have cleaned up the cages but still don't want to talk to you!!! : Edited April 27, 200619 yr by lean2078
April 27, 200619 yr Perhaps it would have been a good idea to mention the situation in the pictures when you posted them. Try to understand that everyone is merely concerned for the birds, and without any explanation, the state of those cages did seem pretty bad. Maybe Kirby didn't approach the situation with quite the right manner, but his intentions are good.
April 27, 200619 yr I HATE when people dont clean thier pet cages...thats all! Jannette, your 100% correct! It was both our faults... Why didnt you explain the situation to us when you replied today at 8:42 then? Two people asked you about the nastyness...And talking about politness not being my best suit, thats funny....actually! Im know to be very polite, except when people treat pets like disposible waste. I know it wasnt you, and i understnand now, but i just think you could have answered us in the last post you did....that would have been polite... You dont see that egg in the tiels cage? I said TIEL, not keet! (Laughing out loud)...The hen is on the filthy floor, with the egg beside her.... Please tell me youve seen it before! I wish you good luck with them! And id agree, get bigger cages, and a nest box for the pair...and try to breed succesffully! Kirby -Sorry about that Lean....and i was unimpressed, and wasnt going to talk to you unless you cleaned those cages becuase thats completly unecessary to be that filthy! But i know you didnt do it, so dont worry about that comment anymore... Sorry Edited April 27, 200619 yr by Kirby
April 27, 200619 yr Author i agree about the condtions of the cages but as i stated i got them that way, i should say the pictures were taken as soon as i got them home then cages cleaned and new pictures taken those didn't turn out, my camera is such a piece of trash kirby i know i really shouldn't use the pics i should just delete those and get new ones but this camera GRRRRR how bout this i'll start over by saying sorry i didn't tell the whole story AND the reason i didn't respond is i've been off the puter, internet issues HAte it when that happens I will try to get better pix and post how's that? I am special ordering cages for all, i actually had an egg hatch shortly after i got them but only one and this baby didn't survive, the really bummer thing is my female (bonnie) refuses to go anywhere near a nestbox! any ideas? Edited April 27, 200619 yr by lean2078
April 27, 200619 yr (Laughing out loud)...apology accepted! About Bonnie (love that name by the way!) Id just hang the nest box up outside, btu attached to the cage through a hole, or small door. It may take a while before the male even goes close to it...but eventually they both will! Shell soon know what its for..then lay in it! Good luck! Kirby
April 27, 200619 yr Author thanks (Laughing out loud) if you like her name you'll love her mates name bonnie and clyde i couldn't help it from the time i brought them home i've had to padlock them into the cage because they want out here is the weird thing they aren't tame but i can handle eggs mess with the cage i can do anything EXCEPT tough them lolthey will even escape only to sit ontop the cage chirping at me they are goofy! I do try to leave any eggs alone unless i don't want babies or they are not sitting on them i read something about the natural oils in our skin can soak through to the unhatched chick and kill it have you heard of this? also i need help name my budgies my little male's name get this is bobob (Laughing out loud) my 13 yr old and i were playing with him one day and origionally his name was bob and we got to just acting funny and adding extras to names and came up with that one okay so anyway i need to come up with names for my two females i posted this on budgie talk and got couple good ideas, one is diamond for the white one and honey for the yellow any ideas here? April 28, 200619 yr Hi, I think everyone is glad you both decided for a ceasefire over here… I’m sure we all welcome you into this forum and hope to see new photos of your birds. If you had the hart to “save” them from those conditions and are willing to give them better ones, you deserve our admiration.
April 28, 200619 yr If those two just sit on top of the cage when they're out, why not let them out sometimes? If you time it for a day when you know you'll be around all day and haven't got to rush off anywhere and leave them, you could just let them out and leave them to it. My budgies aren't particularly hand-tame. I can't catch them to put them back in their cage, but they know where their food is... in the cage! So every night they go back in for some food. Sometimes my budgies don't quite make it into the cage, but all they do is go to sleep on the top of the cage as that's where they feel safe. I hardly ever shut the door to my budgie cage.
April 28, 200619 yr Author my keets are tame my grey tiels aren't, my tiels are the ones that get out, i usually take them into our bedroom and let them out for couple hrs to play and interact with me, i have cats so sitting on the cage anywhere except in an room with a door shut is out of the question

I realised it was your tiels, but I didn't realise about the cats. eek! I guess that's the advantage of keeping my birds in my room. Our cats don't come in here. It's the birds room as much as mine. It's nice that you get them out to play though. It's so important for them.
April 28, 200619 yr I'm that mess was sorted with out the need of 'staff help' Lean it sounds like you do a fantastic job of re-homing birds in need of extra love and care. I myself was worried about the state of their cages but having read everything I understand that you were not the cause but the instead the solution, give these guys a great life which they should have had from the start. Sometimes it takes a while for hen to work out what a box is all about; it can help sometimes to add an egg on the ground into the box. That sure helped my hen work out what to do. Handling eggs should be at a minimum but it can be done. Not sure with Tiels but I think they would need some calcium to their diets too when laying eggs. A cuttle bone can help with that. Time out in a bedroom is fine with an untamed bird.
April 28, 200619 yr If you do prefer not to touch the eggs you can always pick them up with a small spoon.
April 28, 200619 yr :ausb: I can totally understand Kirby's initial concern, hello to you and will be happy to see their "makeover cage pictures" (sounds like a TV show ). :ausb:
April 28, 200619 yr Author my cats aren't too bad when it comes to the birds but i would never want my birds to be out of the cage around them...i even put the birds in a different room with door closed when i go out you can just never tell how a cat or even a dog is gonna react to a bird it's okay though since i have lots of time (being a stay at home mom) i let my birds out quite a bit, sometimes if the cats take a nap in the bathroom i will shut that door and let everyone out on for playtime, but it's easier for me to take the birds to a different room
