I was sorting through all my budgies today as they were being moved into the new aviary, amongst which is a dominant pied cock I hadnt paid much attention to lately until now. I am culling birds so I was checking out which ones I was keeping and whick I am selling.

Anyway this dominant pied didnt have any spots before so I was looking at him closely noticing that now he had his pied spots. Then I saw his eyes

 

He has NO IRIS RINGS and his eyes are plum coloured like a recessive pied, but he is a dominant pied. WHY ??

Could be a combination pied. Recessive + dominant. Parents may have been both split for recessive.

okay, had a really good look at this guy. He is one really super budgie! Very nice indeed.

 

I would say there are two possibilities.

 

1. He is a combination of Australian Dominant Pied and Recessive Pied. He shows all features typical of a Dom Pied except lack of iris.

 

2. Although he is not a pied with minimal markings he shows lack of iris sometimes found in double factors pieds. Although it is rare to find both iris missing. It is possible that the pied gene has acted in this area.

 

Breeding will of course solve the riddle but to be honest this bird is too good a Dom Pied to waste on a Recessive Pied pairing. In the end it is up to Kaz how she wishes to proceed.

Might need a good pied hen. Hmmmmm, where could you get one - "rofl:

Breeder states the father is an opaline green cock and mother is cinnamon grey green dominant pied. The sister of this dom pied cock with the plum eyes, has taken out best in show a few times and won the Busselton Show also. No recessive pied known of in the background at this stage. Will inquire further of the breeder of this pieds mother.

Might need a good pied hen. Hmmmmm, where could you get one - "rofl:

It's at times like this where Im glad I now know how to AI a bird. I have only AI'd the one cock with a bad wing so far, but I have tested other cocks to see if they produce samples. I have had success with about 65-75% of my cocks over 1 year old and one under a year.

 

Provided he produces a sample, this would be the perfect situation for AI - too good a cock to waste on a pairing, but if you have a dud cock that doesnt fill eggs but feeds well, and a good recessive hen - AI her to this mystery pied cock while you pair him with whoever you please and bing bang boom 2 sets of chicks!

The judge was judging the birds in front of all the members and asking them what they thought etc, but he made all the decisions. At the end after this pied was deemed best dominant pied the judge asked....äny questions ?" to which Renee shot up her hand and said YES, KAREN HAS ONE ABOUT HER PIED !! Thanks Renee

Everyone looked then and decided he didnt in fact have any iris rings, but the fact that he was deemed best dom pied stayed. Apparently according to the judge, this dommie pied has to have recessive pied in his genetic makeup for this to have occurred.

i have a few kaz and he does not have enough wing markings to be a dom so....

sorry to be diffrent but im sticking to this as my rec looks dom but its rec for sure and i get one each clutch they are paired the rest clutch are all doms though and all hens so far have been split rec pied through out the generations

It was debated during our other clubs Christmas meeting today...there was a school of thought it may have been a dutch pied, but once the standard was checked they realised it didnt fit that category either and has been decided it must be dominant pied with recessive pied inheritance.
