Here's a stack of pied budgies. Posting it for those who are still trying to work out what kinds of pied budgies there are.

Keep it simple, dont worry about the colours.

Choose from Dominant pied, recessive pied, DF dominant pied and spangle dominant pied and any surprises.

Take a pencil and paper, and write your answers down.....when done, send to me for your score. Be patient and wait for yours to be assessed. Results will be posted.

See how many you can get right.

Dont answer in the topic...all answers to be PMed to me....Kaz. Discussions in the topic after scores have been done.

You may post in this topic that you have pmed your answers.

I thought I was going well with pieds too.... :( From looking at the correct answers I guess it's the "spangle" that throws me off.... Maybe I was trying too hard and looking for something that wasn't there.... I don't know, I guess I just need to find an excuse to justify my "failure".... :D:D:D Maybe better luck next time.

OKAY>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>time for discussion :)

This little pied had a lot of people confused AAA018.jpg

Due to its heavy wing markings perhaps a lot of people thought it was a dominant pied. Its actually a recessive pied from two recessive pied parents. Here it is with its brothers and sisters aa045.jpg

No other birds in the aviary to be its mystery parent. Here she is as a baby

a268.jpg

and as an adult in the aviary March210.jpg

And later in another clutch the parents produced another one exactly the same. Here is her look alike sister as a baby ( just like her ) March618.jpg

If she ( Calico and her sister ) was a dominant pied they would not have mixed colour feathers in their flights.

okay, so even though the show standard indicates that Recesive Pieds must have less than 30% markings it is the lack of eye rings we need to focus on.

So basically it's a Recesive Pied that you should NOT show. :)

I can see how I approached this the wrong way, as a steward, and not as a discerning evaluator!

The distribution of the pied pattern is very important when identifying pieds. The clear areas on the front of the chest are usually higher on a recessive than a dominant. The eyes, the beak and feet colour are important indicators but not infallable. Also this bird has marked flight feathers which a dominant pied would never have

That was the one i got wrong :budgiedance: I would have never have guessed it was a recessive - as a chick anyway

Even as an adult the heavily marked wing pattern may have confused some people...but note no iris rings, yellow beak and patterned flight feathers.
