Posted June 13, 200817 yr So if you are one of the few people that have not heard I am FINALLY getting my aviary this is what i am getting So my set up will be two inside breeding cages (which at the moment have my older birds in them as they winter inside with the heater) One Patio Cage which at the moment has the other birds in it but will be used for the young or a quarra cage depending on my needs and then the aviary. today we cleared the space the for the aviary to go in. I FINALLY got my paper work from the council saying that it could go in (that was close) they guy came and inspected the area we had to change out plans as it was going to go with one long side against the fence and the back short side against the tree now it is going next to the tree with the short side against the fence. The good thing about this is that there is a concrete runner for the garden which we will but it up against which would work well. For the time being it will be a dirt floor but Dad and I will be laying a slab later in the year (I had 19 staples removed from my stomach today so we figure getting it up and running will be enough slab can come later) Also I have two VERY good rat dogs who patrol the back yard so rats and mice be warned! I really wish I could have taken photos of how it looked before cause that was about 4 hours of us clearing stuff to make room. Then it rained so I went shopping for stuff for the aviay, got a really good round two rope perch for $10 and a rope and wood swing for $7 I also got a water bottle thing to hang from the roof but now am worried cause if Lime is a french molt and Harley can't fly well I am going to have to re think the water thing. I am so lucky that my Dad comes down the helps me with these type of things at 80 and legally blind he is still the best person I know for getting stuff like this done! Blind man with power tool! Will post progress pics of what happens tomorrow. Oh and MB you know that box to dropped off today? Well Dad liked it so much that he is thinking of making me some as he feels that they would be better for me to transport my budgies in then my cage! yes my 8 budgies and me going down to the vets for their yearly check up with two digs in toe! More picture's tomorrow I promise, Oh and if anyone has any ideas then please let me know along the way.
June 13, 200817 yr That box is great, cost me $15 at the bird sale and it was one of the best purchases I made all day! Good progress!
June 14, 200817 yr Author Someone kill me! Who's idea was this anyway???? Arrived to find the thing still together we then take it apart and I don't this she had cleaned out the base in the 5 years that it has been up. I also ended up with 6 Tiels and 8 budgies..... Here is the progress, we started out at 8am and it is now 3.30pm we have not stopped all day and FINALLY it's done! Should type more about how it was all done but really over it! June 14, 200817 yr WOW Looks Great!!! What a busy day you had. The aviary really suits your home and your birds will be so happy in there. Great buy!
June 14, 200817 yr Author Great job !! I am waiting for the photos of your Dad I tried but he threatened to quit if I did take a photo of him! here is one from his 80th Birthday and with the 11th and newest grandkid
June 14, 200817 yr Looks great AV, I have done a reshuffle here so that I can seperate the new guys out for quarantine and tomorrow I am going to turf a couple of my breeding pairs back in the aviary as they don't want to breed and I'll let the two pairs you gave me do their quarantine in the breeding boxes since they sound keen. A few days to relax, then worming for them once they are calmer.
June 14, 200817 yr Author Yeah my dad may moan a bit about doing this but he had fun so that great as he likes feeling useful! MB watch the green and yellow pair that I said had paired up and where sitting on eggs cause everytime I moved them they bit me and the little buggers could bite! I would be intresting in seeing what kind of babies come from the blue ones (sorry I suck at mutations) as I said I was tempted to keep them but I really am trying to limit my Budgie numbers I swear! One more Budgie to get, Hopefully Smurfette and then I am done I swear... Yes I know I have said that before! Also anyone have and Idea on how many Budgies I could have in the aviary it would be nice to have a limit! I really want to start having a look at Mutations and giving it a try but Dad still thinks I should stick to trying to breed Blues/Harliquins.
June 14, 200817 yr Also anyone have and Idea on how many Budgies I could have in the aviary it would be nice to have a limit! It looks bigger than mine, so depending on the amount of perches you had (and provided you were not breeding in there) you could probably put up to 50 budgies in there - less if you mix with tiels. - how is that for your limit
June 14, 200817 yr The blues are both opalines The other pair I can't remember which ones they were I should have written it down. You could put heaps in that aviary! I comfortably but 25 budgies and 10 tiels in my aviary (I had lots more than that when you came here though- about 35 budgies short term ) That aviary is bigger than mine.
June 15, 200817 yr Author Guys you are aware that you so should have told me 20 or something! MB the green and yellow pair are the cock that is bright yellow with the green strips across his tiummy and the (and I might be wrong here) yellow faced pied????? Watch them for a bit as he does feed here 95% of the time. I am going to get some more Blue budgies as Mum and Dad are Happier for me to get more as long as i breed some blues as Dad use to breed them. (even though mum and dad do not live with me! ) Dad is thinking about getting back in to showing with my birds... no bad dad no! I would just be happy to breed some pets.
June 15, 200817 yr I have a cute little blue normal hen here you can have if you like she's pet type though The bright yellow pied bloke is feeding and trying to do the nasty with the yellow faced mauve girl does that sound right? Edited June 15, 200817 yr by melbournebudgies
June 15, 200817 yr Author I have a cute little blue normal hen here you can have if you like she's pet type though The bright yellow pied bloke is feeding and trying to do the nasty with the yellow faced mauve girl does that sound right? Yeah sort of they where the only two that where feeding each other so unless getting your thing on is catching then I would say they are the pair! Honey I might come around and look at her However I did get a pretty little hen today from a friend of a friend who's father use to breed birds when my dad was breeding.... Didn't even know that she was coming there was a knock on my door. Dad had set it up a while back and rang the guy and he came across with her today. She is from the line that my father use to breed from and when he got out of the business about 15 years ago he gave all the birds to this guys son who was the one who dropped her off today. She is about 3 years old and is designed to be Harleys girlfriend. As I have said before I am pretty sure his breeding days are behind him but I will give him one last chance with this little hen and we will go from there. If not hey another birds (yes I know I said I was done but really come on did anyone believe me????) Here is a picture of her now I have to call her something! As for the aviary I put some straw down on the base just so that I can keep the mud down as between the rain and us digging then we have a mud bath at the moment! Not anywhere near a thick of a layer as it looks in the picture but will help untill Dad and I get around to concerting the base. Now for the clean up! Since I took over the junk corner I have to find somewhere else to put all the junk! Quick question the big pot I was thinking of putting in the aviary with a plant in it. Any suggestions on what to use??? Edited June 15, 200817 yr by Angelic Vampyre
June 15, 200817 yr Guys you are aware that you so should have told me 20 or something! You don't have to put 50 in there I'm sure 20 will be happy with some extra space!
