Posted March 7, 200817 yr Today I went to the Vet that Maesie had recommended to me awhile ago to get some Ivermectin as I've had an outbreak of mites. The vet told me that they no longer recommended Ivermectin spot on treatment as it can be quite dangerous if not administered by a vet and I'm not taking 40 birds to the vets. He told me that this is what they recommend now, it's called Avitrol. Has anyone else heard of this?
March 7, 200817 yr No haven't heard of that one. I use AIL from Vetafarm around the aviary. If I get one of the birds with the start of it, I use Baby Oil. Works a treat. I haven't had any mites for over a year. Edited March 7, 200817 yr by Daz
March 7, 200817 yr I prefer not to use sprays myself as my personal view is I dont like anything birds can breathe in that may be harmful. I will stick by the spot on treatment and also the one I use in their water. Even when you accidentally spot on more than one drop on the birds I have never had any trouble. I think your vet is paranoid and also may be promoting one suppliers product over another. The vet is also creating a situatioon where he is advising against home treatments, thuis getting you to come in and generate more income. Edited March 7, 200817 yr by KAZ

That was my concern also, I don't like the idea of a spray - it says don't spray it anywhere near there eyes and nostrils (won't be an easy task) that's why I wanted the spot on Ivermectin but there aren't any other vets that have it.

March 7, 200817 yr Interesting, I did a search on Avitrol and it supplies chemicals to get rid of birds. Avitrol is used as a chemical frightening agent to remove pest birds from a given location. ... Are birds affected by Avitrol in pain? ... Edited March 7, 200817 yr by Daz link added
March 7, 200817 yr What really annoys me is vets who wont listen to what we ask of them or what we need. They make us take products we dont really want and they force tests that arent necessary. I have had arguments with vets who wont listen to me. I have a background in vet nursing. One vet tried to tell me my 21 year old cat had a thyroid problem, kidney disease and this and that when I stated that the symptoms he said he saw were only due to anxiety at the first car trip in years. The vet insisted and ordered a barrage of tests which cost me a fortune. To find I was right and he was wrong. Then he asked for the cat back for more tests that werent necessary and the cat had no symptoms for. I told him I was taking my business elsewhere. A recent vet we were using also kept getting their diagnoses wrong on more than one occasion...were not fixing the issues and sending the animal home again still with the existing problem unsolved but charging for not fixing the problem...money into the thousands. I worked out one of the problems was a loose tooth the cat had. They had him on a drip and sent him home still not eating and he hadnt eaten for 3 weeks nearly apart from me syringing gravy into his mouth. Again I went elsewhere. Not all vets know what they are talking about.

I don't want to use it at all now.
March 7, 200817 yr I can remember taking a Opaline Light green hen to an Avarian Vet. The questioned me that the bird was a cock. I questioned him that he was a avian vet. He gave the bird a vitamin shot and it died. I now drive 1/2 hour across town to a vet I trust. There are closer ones but I don't trust them. Edited March 7, 200817 yr by Daz spelling

If your vet is nearby...I would take it back to them and tell them you would like to be listened to in the future as to your needs and requirements or you WILL take your business elsewhere. Its about time these guys started to listen instead of promoting their own products ( some with kickbacks from companies ) or agendas. Sometimes the only way to find a good vet is to quiz and question the vet you have to work them out. They are less inclined to listen to us than they should at times. Edited March 7, 200817 yr by KAZ

The vet is about 30km for me, our local vet is more into large animals are we are in what you call a rural area the last time I went there with a bird they just scratched there head. I rang some other vets and they won't sell over the counter Ivermectin either and the one I went to was where Maesie got hers from?
March 7, 200817 yr Lots of vets wont sell Ivermectin, as it’s not registered for use on birds, but like Kaz said I have used it for my mite problems & accidentally overdosed it with no ill effect that could be seen at least. It’s difficult I’ve found to find a vet that will supply it in small amounts for us to use on birds, I bought the smallest bottle I could get, it cost over $80 here but I have lots of birds & now have some sheep so I will use it.
March 7, 200817 yr Interesting!!! Did you take any birds with you? All I can think of is that perhaps because you're not a regular customer there? I'm not sure. I only went a few months ago, and I didn't have a problem getting it. I'm sorry you couldn't get some
March 7, 200817 yr Horse or cattle ivermectin is what its intended use is , but for birds you should water the mix down 10 times , at this dose it is safe for use on birds . I know of some people that accidently overdosed with the full strenght dose and it killed the birds within 30 min , so do be careful with this.
March 7, 200817 yr I use Ivermectin as well. My vet gives it to me in a syringe, she writes on it that it's 1%, so I guess she mixes it as well. The only think she warned me about is that if you put too much on the cere, it could get into the nose, but she told me I can put a drop under the wing and it does the same job and it doesn't matter if I drop too much. I would also be afraid to use spray on birds.

We used to be regulars at that vets when we lived in that area and still had an account there. Apparently this is just a new spray that they prefer to treat mites with?

Hopefully if I ever need it again, they wont give that spray to me!!! Ivermecton is so easy to use. Kaz might have to set up supply centre for all the stuff we can't get over here!!!
