Posted January 28, 200817 yr I have to do an overhaul of my aviary, and so that meant moving some of the budgies, so it was a great time to start pairing up some of them for breeding. I have started slowly, and we will see how we go. There is space for 7 breeding paairs, but i have only started with 3 pairs. Whilst I like the pet types, I do prefer the larger budgies, so one of the things I am doing here is trying to breed for size. I need more green in my aviary as well, so I am trying to pair green birds with blue birds, so I will get green birds, unless the green is split to blue, which I will not know until they breed. I am also a bit of a romantic, so if two pet type birds actually "get together" I will give them a chance. That is what I did with Ozzy and Angel as well as Sebby and Romeo, and I have done that once more. So, the current pairs are Humphrey and Milly - Humprhey has not bred before and I do nto even know his age. Milly is 3 this year, has had 2 clutches, and is a great mother. Nibbler and Sherbert - Nibbler is the son of Milly and Zeus. He might be split to Cinnamon, not yet sure. Sherbert is a Clearwing, though since this is recessive, she might pass on this gene, but it will not show. Cheese and Sebby - These two kind of found each other in the aviary. They are constantly feeding. Cheese is a Golden Face Type II Recessive Blue Pied, whilst Sebby is a Violet Fallow. Form pair 1 I think I should get normal greens. If there is anything else, it is because Humphrey has some hidden genes. From Pair 2 I think i should get normal light greens. neither appear to have a dark factor, unless Sherbert is split for blue. Some offdpring might cary the clearwing gene and that could appear a generation later. Nibbler may be carrying the cinnamon gene (his mother is a cinnamon) so that might appear in the girls. From pair 3, I have no idea. We discussed it on here before, but i am not sure whether a consensus was reached on what you would get breeding a recessive pied to a fallow. January 28, 200817 yr Pair 1 you will get all green unless humphrey is split to sex linked/other genes... and i can't tell if Milly is a cinnamon or not? but if so all cocks will be split to cinnamon from that pairing... Pair 2 all green birds unles your clearwing is split blue... and also depends on other splits in the mix... all chicks split to clearwing and blue Pair 3 will be normal blues and Yf normal blues possible violets if she is carrying the violet gene all split to recessive pied and fallow once again... depending on other splits they have :fear
January 29, 200817 yr Author Well, the girls have been remodelling. Shavings have been removed out of each nest box and are on the floor of each cage. A good sign so early on, only 1 day into things
February 4, 200817 yr Author well, the pairings of Humphrey & Milly and Sebby & Cheese look promising. Plenty of visiting the nest box, preening each other, him feeding her. The other pairing of Sherbert & Nibbler looks less promising, and I am blaming Sherbert. Nibbler tries to feed her, and even interact with her, but she will have nothing of it. She has been in the nest box and has cleaned it out a bit, but I am not sure that there is going to be any result there. Her cere has gotten darker in the last week or so, but it does not look promising. It has only been a week, so i will give them another week, but if there is no sign of "romance", then back to the aviary they will go.

How long do you have them together before you let them have the box
February 4, 200817 yr Author The box is attached on the outside of breeding cages. It is not possible to remove it, so once they are placed in a breeding cage, the box is available to them. Now, Sebby and Milly have both bred before. Sherbert has had the opportunity to breed but "decided" not to. She was not too young, she was with a "preferred" partner, she just decided not to last year. I thought I would give her another chance this year. I will give it another week.

Sometimes the hen will make a beeline into the box and not come out , which will result in infertile eggs if she lays, This year I covered the hole with cardboard that had a hole bout the size of a five cent piece in it , the hens then have to chew their way in , allowing time for the cocks to mate. Its now been two weeks and out of 18 cabinets two hens havent even look at the box , one hen only just yesterday started chewing on the cardboard. Eight cabinets have eggs, the others I dont think are far off , so far so good , this was the first time Ive tried this method and im pretty happy with the results so far.
February 4, 200817 yr Mostly I haven’t had too many problems with infertile eggs in the first batch, but found in quite a few cases that in subsequent batches…second or third, their eggs were completely infertile as they wouldn't leave the nest after having a fully fertile first batch & even locking them out of the nest for a few days didn’t help.
February 6, 200817 yr Author Well, the good news is that there are 2 eggs, laid today. One to Sebby and Cheese and one to Milly and Humphrey. I am really pleased that Humprhey will have young that keep his lineage going. I was going to get back into budgies (had them when i was younger - about 20 years ago) and i had planned on getting some budgies. Humphrey ended up being caught by my mother and her friend. he must have escaped from somewhere and they caught him by hand, so you can guess how exhausted he was. he is not the most spectacular looking budgie, but he is the first little one i got when I started with budgies once more. He has now, and will always have a special place in my heart. I expect his offspring to be good birds as well. Milly produced some good looking birds with her previous partner Zeus (may he RIP) so hopefully these offspring will be good. Sebby is just a beautiful bird, and her and Cheese hit it off. Like before, her egg is smaller than Milly's. Nothing from the other pair. Like I said, I think they are about to be returned to the aviary, replaced with some others soon.
February 8, 200817 yr Author I suppose i am mainly updating this for my own records. Dave: hey dave, 2 eggs each in each nest box Dave: Cool. Each? Dave: Sebby and Milly both have 2 eggs each, not Sherbert Dave: You going to return her to the aviary? Dave: Yes, soon.

You're gonna have lots of feathered ones soon
February 8, 200817 yr Author Thanks for the reply Kaz. Nice to see someone is reading this. Some new pairs going in tomorrow as well. Hugo with Angel and previously Nibbler was with Sherbert Sherbert is going to be removed and Tralia is going to join young Nibbler
February 8, 200817 yr Your pairs look good. I especially can't wait to see the chicks from Hugo and Angel. Pretty ones for sure! :grbud:
February 8, 200817 yr Author not sure what they will look like. hugo is a Double Factor Dominant Pied Violet (maybe, a lot brighter than sky blue, and not cobalt, so i am saying violet, not sure, electic blue is the best way to describe it). Angel is an albino, but I am pretty sure she is maskign a mauve gene. She has was paired with a grey-green spangle and they produced a YFIImauve, a grey green spangle, and what it is pied, I think there are iris rings, so dominant grey green pied. Can the albino gene mask the pied gene?
February 8, 200817 yr Author thanks Kaz. Funnily enough, my mother picked him out and bought him for me. She liked the look of him, and then decided to name him as well. Funny, as deep down she loves the birds, but will never admit it - (Laughing out loud)
February 8, 200817 yr Author If the Albino gene can mask any other I am going to say that since a Grey-Green spangle can not mask the dominant pied gene, and the Albino gene can, then Angel is an Albino that is masking dominant pied mauve. interesting if this is right!
February 9, 200817 yr Author Well the changes have been made. Angel is already checking out the nest boc, and demanding some food from Hugo. He seems willing to oblige. We will see how Nibbler and Tralia go. Funny as all the hens, except Tralia, have bred before. I am hoping based on a previous post to get some Violet and Muave spangles from Hugo and Angel. Might get some single and DF spangels? Could I get an albino girl? Tralia and Nibbler might also be interesting. Nibblers mother was a cinnamon, so he might be carrying a cinnamon gene, Tralia's mother being a spangle could give me spangles, and since her mother was Angel - an albino that might be split be masking mauve, it $ also possible to get some blue birds I figure. Hopefully her and Nibbler hit it off.
