Melanistic Spangle

Featured Replies

Interesting. Although he says after they molt out the wings look like a 'spangle in reverse'. Isn't this a normal? To me the wings look normal.

that is what I was thinking too Rainbow when I looked at them.

Their feathers seem longer or more wildish - hope you understand what I mean.

It took me a while to even realise what was different, (Laughing out loud). :)

me too :ausb: I didn't get to read it all ( have it bookmarked for later) but it's very interesting, I wish there was pictures of one "BEFORE" the moult to help understand it better.

edit to add: okay now that I have read it completely I see that he does have a baby shot and adult shot of the same bird. I'm still a bit confused but what I got from the site was, the babies hatch out looking normal but with the clear tail and then with each molt lost some colour in the wings. Is this what others got?

That's really interesting.. they kinda sort of remind me of a badly marked opaline or something along that line, except with the spangle tails. :ausb:

There are pics of before and after.. the 'barheads' are the young chicks before they started moulting.

I guess you would have to know the background of the chicks, because I looked at those pictures again and the babies have normally marked wings. It seems the odd color of the tail is what catches your eye. If you were to just see the baby without knowing what it was, I'll bet most people wouldn't guess spangle as the mutation. I know I wouldn't.

No I wouldn't either Rainbow, In fact what I thought seeing the pictures was a pied gene ( kinda like the clearflight one)
