Posted July 17, 200915 yr Is this chick turning into a.. ummm... *gulp* feather duster???? The feathers on this chick are longer than any others I have seen and the flights are heavy and loose. Looks very scruffy and i cant see its eyes unless i lift its feathers up. Will these feathers keep growing longer and longer
July 17, 200915 yr Author Yeah.. the other photos dont really show it... but that one does. So what does that mean.. for the chick, its syblings and the parents??? This chick has 8 siblings.
July 17, 200915 yr Yeah.. the other photos dont really show it... but that one does. So what does that mean.. for the chick, its syblings and the parents??? This chick has 8 siblings. In most cases it only means something for the affected chick. It will have a very limited lifespan........generally weeks. Most show breeders still breed the parents and siblings. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....c=23257&hl= Edited July 17, 200915 yr by KAZ
July 17, 200915 yr I believe some breeders have succeeded in supplementing such birds diets, sufficiently to keep them alive. I wouldnt have the foggiest on how they did that im sorry so im of no practical help here If it wasnt a feather duster, going by those first few pics i would have said you have one very buff budgie on your hands!
July 17, 200915 yr Author thanks Dean and Korsp, I am going to keep and eye on this chick and i will keep taking photos as a progression to the condition if it is in fact a feather duster. This may turn into a educational thread

July 17, 200915 yr Which ones were the parents Liv ? and what do the siblings look like ? Edited July 17, 200915 yr by KAZ
July 17, 200915 yr Yes feather duster Liv, I had one lasy week the mother through me one last year so I think it is coming from her.
July 17, 200915 yr Author Parents are Robbie and Renee Some siblings, i don't have photos of them all
July 17, 200915 yr Siblings look GREAT Liv Presented the photos to a judge and breeder who says.................. 'Fraid so , Karen !! Advise her to split up the parents, but don't throw them out. Our understanding is that it is a recessive characteristic. and another very experienced breeder who says............ Hey Kaz Had a look I would definitely say that is a feather duster ask her if the primary tail feathers a shorter than the secondaries if so feather duster tell her I’m very sorry they are heart breaking plus they don’t chirp like normal chicks they sound different Edited July 17, 200915 yr by KAZ
July 17, 200915 yr I have a different idea about feather dusters. I never had any feather dusters until I was given one to look after as a pet, then all of a sudden, a few other pairs began producing feather duster chicks. I think that there may be a feather duster virus that attacks the DNA or RNA of the developing chick at a certain stage of development and makes the feathers grow continuously. Like the opposite of french moult. Lots of egg and biscuit for that chick.
July 17, 200915 yr Interesting Kaz - I had read that they are identifiable in the nest before feathering up because they grow faster, eat more and they have a characteristicly 'different' chirp. I think it was referred to as a 'dopey' chirp? There is something very odd about it that you instantly recognise as 'not quite right' from what i've read. Are you able to confirm this liv?
