I know that they can live in wooden perches

but how about metal?

I got a mite spray from the vet as well for the cage,

I'm going to boil everything & spray the cage

also can mites live in plastic toys that have not been used for months or do they need blood to live?

just to be on the safe side I'm going to boil everything for 30 minutes even the toys & feeders that have not been used for months

when Peanut died of megabacteria i took the cage outside and made up a bowl of hot water and bleach and tipped it all over it. then i let it stand for a while and then tipped a bowl of clean hot water over it again to rinse it.

i also cleaned all the contents of the cage in a weak bleach and water solution. even the ones that i hadnt used in ages. and rinsed them off thoroughly afterwards to make sure there was no residue of bleach left on them.

i dont know how long mites live but its better to go over it thoroughly rather than risk re-infection.

there is a way you can bake perches to sterilize them.
