Hi!

Im a budgie novice. I got my first budgie a few days ago. Its still only a young bird and am wanting to tame it. I have been sitting near it and putting my hand in for a few minutes. Today we had a breakthrough. It allowed me to stroke its belly and then stood on my fingers for a minute or so a couple of times now!

however...As i approach and also when its on my hand it bites me all over. It doesn't seem aggressive and does not hurt at all. But I am unsure what this behaviour means.

Is it testing out the "new object", or is it that the bird is frightened? As I mentioned this is all new to me so want to know if I should back off or just keep going with what Im doing?

thank you

It sounds like you are on the right track. They definitely will check out what your hand is made of by biting it. If you ignore the biting, it should extinguish itself. If you react in a way that the bird enjoys, then he will learn to bite you more to get the same response. (It becomes a game- I can make my owner sing LOUD!)) You could also teach the bird to become a bully, if you pull away out of fear whenever it bites. They can learn pretty quickly that biting gives them power over you. So you don't want to do that, either.

Your best bet is to act like you don't even notice the biting. Hopefully once it becomes familiar with your hand, it won't bother to bite any more.

How are things coming along now?

I would say this is normal. My first Budgie was pretty quick to tame as he was a curious bird, and he started to do this when I put my hand in the cage. I think he did this to make sure I stayed still so he could hop on, or so if I moved suddenly he could punish me (LOL). he still does it but he always jumps on and goes straight to m nails and starts 'chatting' to them :) its quite hilarious to watch. he also 'nibbles' my nails and tries to find stuff under them to eat.(ewwww). he could just be taking precautions or he could be just curious. hope I could help :) elle
