Hey Devil,

Recovered from your walk/run??

We are the same as Macka. It is good seed and there is a bit af flexibility in the mix from what I understand.

Maybe it would be best to buy a pallet of seed between a few of you?

If you need contact details, let me know.

Cheers

PT

well i dont get club seed anymore which was a good price bit less than mackas price

i dont like it was fine but they changed the mix they were using less canary more **** in my opinion

its same seed you are talking of from leeton im pretty sure

i get avi grain now, their canary and then mix my own white french millet at 25 dollors a 20 k bag

and my own red pannicn at 30 a 20 killo bag

i just add a tiny bit of each as the avi grain has everything the birds could need i get that for 30 a 20 killo bag as i smile alot when i buy it :) its normally 33.50 i get two bags for 60 and the other two seeds

so all up 115.00 for them all the canary is recreant every fortnight but every off week i get only one bag so i never run out but the other two are only every 3 month buys

I did bring seed to Tassie in the past from Leeton..( Max Douglas ).. And it had traces of Pattersons curse in the seed. Pallet was quarantined in Tassie and sent back to NSW at my cost....... TAZ talk to blair / poole or Charlesworth .. I believe they are bringing in seed from Ellenbee by the pallet that has been certified.

okay Taz, I now get my seed through are club from Leeton. It is called Maxi Seed. With freight and a bit of money for fund raising in our small club we end up paying $25.00 for 20 kilo bag. Good seed in my opinion.

You can get the normal mix or the Wato mix which has red millet in it .

I think the seed is $21.00 a bag before freight and our fund raising etc.

We are all happy to pay the extra.

You can can canary, red millet, hulled oats , jap millet all seperate.

I ran out of seed a couple of weeks ago and had to buy some from the produce store here. I bought avigrain breeders mix and it was $26.50 for $20. kilo but it has hardly any canary seed in it all , Greg had to go to Numurkah and buy me a couple of kilos of canary seed to mix through it.

Howard Martin is what I use to use up until last year but it was cost me $75.00 a bag of 40 kilos some time it was cheaper and sometimes it was dearer but I was buying one bag every three weeks .

The seed from Leeton is more reasonable in price.

this is why i get the canary one its got every thing the same as the breeders mix but more canary

the avi grain finch has even parts of all seeds

we get ripped off up here but oh well i get 3.50 off each bag so ... im happy enough as i really didnt like the change in the clubs seed

but thats me

my birds prefer what they are getting now as well so its what counts less wastage no scrounging through it for things

The price you pay is gauged on the

% of Canary in the mix.The cheaper

mixes have fillers seeds to make the weight,

So you need to be comparing, apples with

apples.

By the sound of it seed for Tassie, would have to be heat

treated,so it doesn't germinate & I would think it

would make it dearer.

I have to admit that the seed that I had that made my birds die did not sprout either, but I just tried to sprout the new stuff I have now and yes it is all looking great. I am planting this seed to grow my own millet ect.

I do not give my birds soaked millet or canary of any type anymore. If I soak anything it is oats.

I am differently not moving over lol seed is to expensive.

Actually on noticed on facebook last night that budgie smuggler group from Geelong put a post up for Golden Cob seed.

20 kilo I think $46.00. wow that's expensive. I use to use golden cob when I first started and I love that seed but it went from I think around $22. 00 for 25 kilo to something like $31.00 for 20 kilo so I stopped buying it. And that's years ago when the seed staring going up because of the drought.

You would think it would start coming down now taht we are getting plenty of rain but I bet it doesn't.

When need we buy canary seed we buy it from Bryons seed in Numurkah by the kilo and it is I think a $1.60 a kilo, In Shepparton at Hunters the last we brought it from there by the kilo was $4.50 a kilo and it was as dirty as and filled with bits of dried grass ect. Leeton have it and vary reasonable price to but I don't use enough of it to buy a whole bag. I use to buy a whole bag but ended up throwing away because it got to old.

I just don't know how they justify it all.

I use Tassie budgie mix......$46 for 25kg...Not a great mix, lots of little seeds wasted.

Not too much other variety down here. Will look at bringing some in again, when bird room is up and running.

Always happy to help out the elderly when I can! If you were showing at Western Subs on Tuesday and won the Inter section, you would win a pair of mine - Double Factor cock and Spangle Grey Green hen. The hen is closely related to the cock you purchased! I have bred a few spangles this year so should be able to find something for you next year when the youngsters moult out.

As for the seed, the seed we use is MaxiSeed from Max Douglas of Murrami (Leeton). I have used this seed since I started (8 years) and have NEVER had a problem. 50% canary and 50 % mixed millet. We use the standard mix, not the "Watto" mix. I don't know what weed seeds might or might not be in it, but let's put it this way, there is no patersons curse in my backyard!

My Dodgey mates in WA used to buy a pallet of Golden Cob - maybe that is the way to go?

Cheers

PT

I just sprout my new seed from Max and it all sprouted , happy as ever, as for my bad seed I think it was more my fault than any ones because I bought to much at once and it took for ever to use, now I only buy 4 to 6 bags at a time. No problems at all now.

Hey Chookie wish I had some birds to show Tuesday I would love some of your birds. :P

My Dodgey mates in WA used to buy a pallet of Golden Cob - maybe that is the way to go?

Cheers

PT

Your "dodgy mates "in W.A. still buy Golden Cob by the Pallet or two or three ( via one of our clubs ) :D :D :D

BUT by the time we get it we are paying about $47 a bag or thereabouts

Hi Tas and Twisted.

I notice you are both in Tasmania as I am. Do either of you know of any avian vets on the north west coast. I am concerned about one of my budgies. My local vets specialise in dogs, cats, and farm animals.

Thanks in advance :)

Same here splat.. I always got good seed from Max and never got patterson's curse in my back yard...( I did find a nice judging stick in a bag once ) .. Just when tested by quarantine that is what they found so i could not receive it. Had a choice of sending it back or have it destroyed. Max did say at the time that it was growing everywhere up there, and it probably is not a problem to bring into other states. But Tasmania is so strict on what you can and cannot bring into the state. Does anyone use Ellenbee seed as it is suppose to be certified, and can be brought into Tasmania. Leeton seed can be brought in also, it just needs to be tested and certified. Something that needs to be done before leaving Leeton, and the test still needs to be paid for whether it passes or not.( by memory test was around $100 ). A few years ago now so could be cheaper now.. When i had it tested in the past I had 1 pass and 2 fail, so decided not to worry about it anymore. We also need to submit a notice of intent to import seeds.

Hi Rachel,

I am in the south and only know of 1 avian vet in Hobart.

I believe what we can currently buy in the pet shops and produce stores has been treated.

I think the cost is the highway between Tassie and the mainland. Expensive bit of road that.
