hi

today i was in cleaning out my breeding boxes and doing all the jobs and while i was doing this some other birds had flew through instead of shooing them straight out i left them talking to a pair of birds locked up because i was really busy they wouldnt leave them alone so i finally chased them back into the other aviary through the door when i had done this the hen in the box was going crook the cock bird was in the box as well so i got it down and the little so and so had egg all over his face and three eggs smashed

i havent bred either of them before and they seemed to be going great all the usual things

WILL HE KEEP DOING this is he any good to breed from or do i retire him hes 2 i have been disturbing my birds more latley and have more birds down than what i was going to not all full though but wondered if all the placeing of birds ect had anything to do with it and now its settled back down he will be fine this is my first egg eater are they missing anything in diet or medicine theres oats in box and millet

thanks in advance

You can buy fake eggs at any good pet store. Just replace them with the real eggs in the box and hopefully he will become dis-interested. You should also have a calcium block or cuttlefishbone in the cages to provide calcium.

If he continues and you want something from him you can remove eggs before he gets to them and foster them.

You can persist and follow Ikon's advice .... personally I don't have any time for egg eaters and they go straight to the Retirement Village :thankyou:

i fill an infertile egg with sweet chilly sauce hot and then reclose it with bit of white out

they dont seem to eat them after that

or i just take the eggs soon as the lay

i take note when it should be layed and take it out straight up

i first let them have a egg and see if it happens again before i do any of thoughs things

thank you renee im going to try all things and if he touchs another one she should lay again soon he will be the fittest youngest bird retired i have :D

As budgies and parrots can eat chilli without feeling the HEAT and effects like we do, I seriously doubt chilli sauce will work.

Young breeders will eat eggs sometimes and so will birds under stress or worried by mice. I would never retire a bird who ate an egg once...I would always look at the whole picture and try them again later.

Good advice kaz, And yes i was serious about the chilli sauce ghazzigh, But not so much now that kaz has said they dont feel the heat like we do....

I alway's solve a problem before i do something to prevent the problem... otherwise you would have to expect it to happen again

well it works for me

always has

its not the heat its the taste they dont like

and the marble thing that actually sometimes works

i did it yesterday

had a first time layer eat a first egg

so i placed a malble in their two actually and she layed today as expected i swaped the egg though(as show test breeding ) with difrent hen who just layed also

incase she ate it but no she was quiet happy to sit on them all i took out one marble and left one

the chilly thing is last rezort but it works its the taste not the heat (i get the tridents sweet chilly with garlic )

and no extra water needed mm grr we all do things diffrent thats just my way .

kaz is right about not always eatting eggs stress not being in condition lots reasons and about letting a hen go just for that

or him for that matter

  • 4 months later...

If fake eggs don't work you can always take one of the smashed eggs, clean it out and fill it up with mustard then put it back in the box. We have fixed several egg eaters like this an they have turned out to be the best parents we have.
