Yes :P

Yes! I seee hen too :cake:

I held a young 6 day old hen up to a very seasoned breeder today and said - "do you think this is a hen?" - he just looked at me blankly :P:D Some people dont even think that sexing them this young is possible. As each chick has hatched, i have written down the sex (on day of hatching) so see how i go... so far so good. :cake:

A few show breeders who have been breeding show budgies a lot longer than I have , have actually sold me "cocks" that I knew to be hens, and indeed did turn out to be hens.

Of six chicks in Omelette's nestbox I was able to sex them today as 5 hens and 1 cock. The chick hatched today was very definitely female. Cere at hatching was a definite white.

Good hens are the hardest thing to find, so a surplus of future breeding stock is a bonus by me :D

I dont know about the texture or shiny-ness of the cere. It can vary from day to day. The whitish ones just have a habit of not looking as shiny due to the colour.

Is there any reason that you know of why you produce many more females than males?

It seems to be seasonal. I have discovered with time that I breed an abundance of hen babies through warmer weather and when I breed through colder weather I get an abundance of cocks.

I get almost the opposite to you Kaz. Ooodles of cocks and nary a hen to be seen. Extremely aggravating as a breeder because good hens - you just cannot buy (without taking out a mortgage!)

As I have been breeding through the cold weather I have been getting 90% cocks this time around too ;)

I Have only bred 32 babies this year todate and over 3/4 of them are hens and that's mainly through the colder months too. So mine differ from you guys too. but I am really happen with my abundence of hens, it's great some are really good. I think out of the 32 I have bred I think there are maybe 3 or 4 that may be culled, and rest are keepers. ;)

With the ceres with my post yesterday i meant that the cocks are a much more baby pink i guess. Where as the baby hens are a pale pink.. Is that so??

Its amazing that you can accurately sex at such a young age and it seems simple if you know what to look for.

Are there any mutations where you can't sex at this age? Also have you come across any chicks that you couldn't sex at this age? What age does the cere go black? Sorry for all the questions. ^_^
