June 9, 200816 yr Hi Rod, welcome to our forums. From what I know birds are lactose intolerant - several sites I have just googled seem to confirm this. Birds are not mammals, they were not made to drink milk. They can't digest lactose so tends to upset their gut and give them bad diarrhoea. There is a definite limit to how much milk products you can give your bird. I strongly advise against letting your budgie drink straight milk. June 9, 200816 yr I agree with Chrysocome about the milk. Why not try mashing up some hard boiled egg instead... They really love it.

June 9, 200816 yr I can understand the whole birds not having milk and I have perosnally never attempted this, however when chicks hatch and aren't fed by their parent their first fed ( i give them ) is yogurt - which is a dairy based product - ?????
June 9, 200816 yr I've always found that odd too Neat??? A wildlife caer I know uses that inner balance supplement for humans for all her birds and animals, I thought I might try that instead
June 9, 200816 yr I was thinking that as I posted. I think in yoghurt, there is fermentation of lactose to lactic acid, so the birds can tolerate it better because less lactose?? Some lactose intolerant people can still eat yoghurt. I just read over what the site I posted said, it does say that yoghurt is considered pretty safe because the probiotics use up the lactose. It's not in all dairy products, as I think cheese is okay in small amounts too. Edited June 9, 200816 yr by Chrysocome
June 9, 200816 yr Yeah Vaalia is a great one full of goodies ( kind like us humans with the colstrum ( sp) when breast feeding bubs)
June 9, 200816 yr Ive heard a few good show breeders feeding wholegrain bread with milk in a dish. I have heard this also
June 9, 200816 yr Hmmm soy!! I was a soy and goat milk baby and Dylan my 2 year old was a soy baby so could that be used too????
June 9, 200816 yr Soy mimics estrogens (female hormones) though. Moderation is the key. Not too much of anything. Edited June 9, 200816 yr by DrNat
June 9, 200816 yr Me personally, I don't see the need or point in giving them milk. They don't get it in the wild and don't need it... ?!?!
June 9, 200816 yr I use to soak the hulled oats in milk and feed this to the parents , But after a trial of one round I didnt see any real benifits , so stoped useing it , and besides It gets expensive after a while , And whats in milk any way, Sodium, Calcium and water and some Fats, So budgies dont really need it , you can give them calcium in other ways that are more benifical.
