Here are two spangles.

They were competing against each other in the same variety class. Why did the one with the 1st Price win?

Daz,Seeing as you have her tail, proped up on the other perch, perhaps she has a hinged tail :( or the wings, may be held a little low.But she looks a better feathered bird then the 1st one.But photoes can lie.

I would have liked to see them both set up on the perch, was the judge a budgie judge or a friend of a friend. ;) :fear

Macka the bird that won was mine and I question the judge as to how on earth he could have called that one. As far as I was conserned the Grey was far above my hen.

When he told be I understand.

hint Don't look at the forest, look at the trees. :fear

Well, it may just be the moment the photos was snapped, but...

the grey certainly isnt showing good stance. may even be a little "unwell" seen by dropped wings, short in body

thats all I can see by these photos. :fear

I noticed a few things . . .

Yes, the grey is a nicer feathered bird, but I believe it has dropped wings, as well as having a 'bump' on the lower back, as the green bird has a much nicer stance.

As for the 'looking at the trees' comment, I believe the perches in the grey's cage are too close together, therefore not confoming to the cage standard, and may had been disqualified, perhaps?

I agree your bird is holding it’s self a lot better & like KylieChappell said maybe the perches are wrongly spaced, not allowing the other bird to show it’s self properly, as the wings below the tail isn’t good. I’m not up on show standards these days, but if the cage wasn’t presented properly that would be enough to disqualify the bird.

You are getting there and have named a few.

Looking at the "Birds" the Grey has a better overall look especielly in the head and shoulder qualities. The back line is letting it down. With the tail on the perch it really shouldn't have that raised rump. When it stood preperly on the perch you can see how bad that rump is.

Now looking at the "trees". There are Spangles. The Grey has no wing markings. The Hen has far esperior marking than the Grey. It does have a better back line and is a better quality spangle. That is why it won.

I was firstlt drawn to the head qualities of the grey. That is why I questioned the judge. But as the judge commented you must weigh up the rest of the bird and also the variety.

The grey is a poor quality spangle but has better qualities in other ways. But it being judged as a spangle.

The perches are correct. It is just that the Grey is a very big bird. ;)

I just read this for the first time Daz and the first thing I noticed is what the judge said judging for spangle, They mark you heavily now for no bulls eye throat spots and wings should have edge makings around them. :)

As for the grey if you put that with a double factor, then the off spring with a normal you will improve those markings. :D

I am learning heaps about spangle as that is what we are specializing in . :D

Most judges don't like opaline spangles either. :P

Thanks all. I am still learning and as they say getting my eye in. I enjoy talking to the open breeders and the judges and am not concerned about get things wrong for this is where we learn. I was with the breeder of this bird today and he was explaining that the birds is a very good stock bird., It is only 4 months old and shows great pertential in the breeding room if not on the bench. That is something else I need to learn about is how to distinish between Show, stock and the pet birds. There is a fine line and only a good eye can tell some apart.

I must admit that this is a very interesting hobbie. I am enjoying every moment of it.

I have know I have much to learn and happy to discuss what I have learnt on the forums. ;)
